This phrase urges me to remind everyone of this truism - Especially concerning skyscraper construction and extraordinarily large scale projects, we're typically talking about 2 different experiences regarding the public impact of the building: The pedestrian experience directly at the site that actually interacts with the visitor, and the visual impact on the public skyline that can be viewed remotely. These are distinct things and should be weighed individually.

I haven't been to the site recently enough to comment on the latest conditions, but I know that the completed memorial, transit hub and everything involved with the full complex will prove a very strong positive for Manhattan. I do think much of that will come from the simple math of Historically Significant Location + Plaza Memorial + Calatrava Design + Really tall buildings all around = Monumental Space. This means the site would likely work even with decidedly average architecture. Sure, there'll be the requisite ooh's and aah's at each skyscraper, but I'm unsure about people going there to ogle WTC 4 or 7 or 2.

Then there is the impact on the skyline. Again, this is a prominent location merely for being at the southern tip of the island, and will be included in millions of images from ferries, on postcards, etc. Any building's impact on a skyline is decidedly public and open to appeal and opinion. It is at that moment just one element within a frozen image. To this end it doesn't matter if you're actually in Brooklyn or just viewing a picture taken from Brooklyn and posted on the web - The image is the same and it can be liked or loathed just the same.

One just needs to respect the differences between these two experiences.

Why is concrete being poured next to tower 2?

With the 2 redesign and the loss of the spires, it is basically a collection of boxes. I do understand that this could end up looking great, but I thought the Foster tower gave the site an iconic building. With no spires on 3, all the tops look similar except for the pencil on top of 1.

I would love to see 2 WTC or 3 WTC do a surprise outside observation deck like the south tower had. That was really awesome! With entertainment companies being involved in the design and build on 2, it could be a possibility. Wouldn't fox jump at the chance to do live shows from the top of "ground zero" as they still call it.

Fox will have dishes on the roof of 2 WTC, so no outdoor deck.

3 WTC....... It's shorter and the good views will be mostly blocked by the blocky neighbor next door.

With this new design;

There's a new official schedule?

When the whole complex will be completed?

The new design is still just a proposal. There has been no contract signed for occupancy of the redesigned WTC-2 yet. Until there is one signed a timetable for the completion of the building can't and won't be announced.

Beside the need for a redesign in floorplans, the huge dishes also brought Foster's design to its knees... A very poor and painfull point imo! The old diamond facade wasn't suited for enormous dishes!

Bjarke Ingels said in an interview that the tower could be completed around 2020.

The wtc site has become a ho-hum hodgepodge of boring glass. Minoru Yamasaki would be appalled he hated glass towers. Too bad they cant just build a twin of one wtc that would look way better than the design for 2wtc they've come up with. Ah well. Thank god for Midtown!

Just look at thread #4787 (the one directly above yours) and you will see that still undetermined because no contract has been signed.

I agree there are many observation decks in the city, but for those of us who used to go to the original WTC, an outdoor deck in LOWER manhattan would be awesome. There are two main outdoor decks (ESB/30 rock) and the other one proposed is in HY - haven't heard anyone doing in downtown.

I think the views from the NY wheel will be great, Bute I'm sure it will be expensive. SI already has great views in that area from the park and the ballpark. However, for a better view the jersey city area of liberty state really has some of the best city views. If they put the casino/hotel in that area with a roof feature (proposed) it would be amazing.

2WTC doesn't need any dishes hanging on it. That's what the communications ring on 1WTC are there for.

Should have just built twin towers two and avoided all of this nonsense :/ the amount of financial setbacks in this very important project is just frustrating
