But why? Why? Why? The new design looks so poor. Please dont built it! It ruins New York!

Here's the bottom line, folks:

1) The people who are doing this have money, and money talks.
2) They will put up whatever building suits their tenants, and the amount of outrage on this forum isn't even a rounding error in their calculations, financial, aesthetic or otherwise.
3) FOX News will spend the rest of eternity rubbing it in the faces of anyone who wants (or doesn't want) to hear that they are sitting at the site of the WTC (and all that implies).
4) IMHO, the design blows chunks; but the designers neither asked for nor desired my input, which goes back to point #2.
5) Yes, it's OK to grieve the old design, but there comes a time when you have to resign yourself to the inevitable.
6) Most likely I will never see this postpartum abortion nor would I set foot in it.
7) Life goes on...at least Mr. Foster can look at Philly and go "They had enough sense not to **** THAT one up."

Well, we obviously have different standards as to what is good enough for the site.
A sigh of compromise is never good enough, and that is what the WTC is.

When I see the new 2 wtc design it looks like one of the twin towers falling down.

Check back about 2 or 3 pages ago, and I think there's already a few of them

1WTC is not a "sigh of compromise", it's a terrific monument. As I've said before, the buildings at this site should call attention to the place, not themselves. 1WTC does this beautifully: a brilliant glass obelisk towering into the sky. If you stand at the base and look up, its design makes it appear as though it goes on forever. It has wonderful geometry and symmetry. With Foster's design, this would've been one of the greatest building complexes in the world. Then Ingels came barging in and started stacking toy blocks and calling it architecture.

I think you are awfully pessimistic!..boxy protrusions!?lol!what about Nordstrom ,Steinway,One Vanderbild,Verre and many others!...the architectural diversity is just amazing and I have big hope about One Vanderbild as NY's most beautiful and beloved tower. What New York currently needs are some clusters of tapered roofs and we're gonna have one in Hudson yards;Definitely, everything sounds fine to me and more than ever NY is the indisputable Mecca of architecture.
....And by the way, you're gonna see that tower two will end up being fantastic....like Calatrava's hub that everybody was mocking and decrying!
Nordstrom, Steinway, One Vanderbilt and Verre are NOT boxy protrusions. Not by a long shot.

Yeah really like all the really tall skyscrapers going up in NY are pretty much not boxes except 432 Park. Central Park tower is kind of a box but it's an interesting box.

Yet he specifically stated in lower Manhattan. I would agree with him that lower Manhattan will not return to the awesome skyline it one was despite almost a century of innovation in design and construction.

I think that silhouette of lower manhattan died long ago, when 1 Chase Manhattan was finished, then later followed by buildings like WTC, 1LP, 60WS, etc. The time of slender set-back art deco towers basically was over about 50 years ago, and today vast majority of architecture are radically different from these.

Actually slenderness came back, just in a little bit different form.

Yea, it'd be great if 1920s-30s Art-Deco neo classical "Pencil" towers returned to fill in mixed use or residential development. We see it already with 30 Park Place, Beekman Tower (Though not really classical) and 220 Central Park.

What's missing in new towers is intricate detailing and some pyramidal or pointy spire.

I think the skyscraper going up today that illustrates the best the "spirit of NY " is the steinway tower it's just screams nyc to me

Although it'd be really cool to see Lower Manhattan with all those peaks the 60s screwed with that too much. Just think we could get a standout tower on the East River side with 80 South Street.

not to mention the office tower 1 Vanderbilt, which gracefully tapers up until its whacky crown.
