That was definitely the idea. I was never too gung-ho about trying to strictly rebuild the twins, since the new WTC seemed like such an opportunity to try new things given the advances in architecture since the originals were built... But I always thought, no matter what was built, there should be at least an imprint of the Twins. Foster's design maintained that. I think BIG's design lacks it entirely. (Of course, even the necessity of referencing the Twins is up for debate. Some don't see the need at all; it's just something I wanted to see.)

Anyway once 1 WTC was built, it was clear that a twin wouldn't work -- from some angles it'd look great, but from others, the side-by-side "pyramids" would look absolutely wonky. So the trick was finding a new geometric shape that fit the bill. In the end, all I did was take a box of with base dimensions of 1 WTC, then used the same negative space (an inverted pyramid) that forms each of the tapered sides of 1 WTC, and pushed it back into the center of the box.

Thanks, man. No real background, aside from some interior design I learned from my parents; mostly just a long-held love and interest in buildings. (I came very close to studying architecture in college, in which case my life would be very different).

I don't want to derail this thread any longer discussing my own dream proposal. It was just a thought experiment, although I'm glad others seem to think it would be a good alternative to what we're getting.

I really love your design for that building. It's simple, but it still gives something new and special. It reminds me of one of the Twin Towers but with one piece of it removed, or should I say, sliced off.

Personally, I would much rather see a taller 1 WTC than having new Twin Towers on the site. I think the new 1 WTC is inferior in comparison with the Twins. It has 104 floors, and the Twins had 110. And the spire?! I think it's just a lame way to make building taller than it really is. It should've been taller and more monumental, not the other way around.

So I am an EXTREMELY open minded person. I don't like to complain and barely ever do I not like a building in the city. However, this one I absolutely dislike. I think it is very ugly, I hope they don't build this garbage. I won't be able to sip coffee in the morning while looking at downtown skyline anymore if this gets built. Amen

For me this is less of a bad design and more of a painfully wasted opportunity.

With the moderators please do something to prevent people from quoting "Huge"previous posts like the first one on this page! Especially when the post there quoting is from the previous page there is absolutely no reason to take up that much space and bandwidth especially when it's just simplistic unofficial drawing proposals. Maybe the quote could just provide a link to the pictures or to the previous thread?

quotes should strip out image tags and leave just the url. make the user put them back in if they really need the image to display.

Someone should quote that alternate design for each page and juxtapose it next to the shitshow that's the current design.

I've come around on this design. I think it'll be a great addition to downtown, depending on the facade quality and further design tweaks.

The New York Times has a short video rendering of 5 views of the 2 WTC design:

http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/...-trade-center/

From evvery single angle, this design looks cheap, unimaginative, uninspiring, and absolutely damaging to the New York skyline. What a goddamn disaster of design this is. Even the New York Times likened it to children's blocks.

A couple screenshots from the video:

It actually looks okay when the cladding is darkened substantially and you're looking 2000 feet above the ground. But it will look worse from the ground, as seen in the renderings.

Edit: there's more. They also provided views from different parts of the city:

Some of those aerial views really show how tilted it will look. How can an architect think a building that looks like it's falling over could be good for the WTC site?

From inside the plaza it will look good. The glass will be top notch no doubt. Still this thing looks so bad from most angles.

The NYT can try to put all the lipstick on this pig it wants and show it from all the angles it so wishes, however, it still looks like a stack of packaging boxes from Amazon. Having said that I will add that it perfectly captures the square and unimaginative minds of Rupert Murdoch and the peg-heads at FOX. Of course, it wouldn't take much to accomplish that feat.

After looking at all those views I began thing to myself which one of these buildings doesn't fit this picture? In my mind the answer is WTC-1. While I really don't like this design for 2 WTC it actually does fit in better with 3 & 4.

I made an account only to comment on this building.
I actually think the idea of "stacking" tibeca sized lowrises to create a transition from lowrises to highrises is brilliant, but not for the World Trade Center... it would be perfect if it was in the 7wtc place ... like a transition to the actual WTC. I like the LED screens under the cantilevers it ads a sci-fi aspect to the building from street level. I try so hard to like this building but something seems so off to me... it has something dynamic with the setbacks but the flat walls facing south and west destroy that and make it look disproportionate. It is such a lost opportunity. And let's face it, there won't be trees on those terraces and it's the only thing that make this design stand out in the skyline.
