There are some similar towers, but it's basically unique when you compare it to the thousands of standard box towers + crowns that are going up all the time.

Why is unique necessarily a good thing? Sure I wouldn't want a box or a series of boxes awkwardly stacked on top of each other for that but Foster's tower had a unique pinnacle, unlike any other in the world. Anyway arguing on opinions is useless, just thought I would add my input.

Yeah, but the tower placements are wrong. Hilariously bad.

Reminds me of the picture vendors around Times Square that sells portraits of the city, most of them place the towers in silly places. For shits and giggles, they also include two of the same building half the time.

The bottom block very effectively functions as a big F-you to Calatrava's transit hub.

Not really, Foster's did that also. No matter what design they picked, the hub would be covered.

I felt that fosters towers base was far more welcoming than BIG's, it was broken up in many places using vertical lines as well as places where it was set back from street level. In the new design the smooth glass facade continues straight into the ground, this gives it a lifeless and inhuman vibe.

There's actually vertical fins on this on the south and west faces.

The cladding actually reminds me of 10 Hudson Yards in a way.

This looks epic. I know there has already been a slight height decrease and some cost issues that may lead to changes, but if this render is still accurate that looks beast. Much more interesting than the other design which only had the diamonds going for it. I've noticed that all of the press I've seen says nothing of poor reception of the design, in fact after reading the almost unequivocally negative opinion here, I've searched for critique of this design but haven't found any yet.

Oh please, all the negativity. It's going to get done, hopefully with some alterations but we aren't getting the Foster design... which I had loved but have come to find dated. We will get our diamond roofs in the two Hudson Yards buildings, so at least there's that... let's give it some space until it becomes concrete there is a deal and not just some preliminary agreement. However I will feel thrilled when it's built, and it is nowhere as horrible as the most hysterical detractors have it, even though it even took a lot of getting used to even for myself. As I said, I do hope alterations and adjustments are made and it improves what the vociferous critics hate most about it... but going in an essentially different direction from the Foster vision, with some variation of this tower, isn't the end of the world for New Yorkers in general and skyscraper lovers in particular. That's all I have to say until there is something definitive on whether Fox and Larry Silverstein will actually team up and build this tower.

Lifeless and inhuman would be very fitting considering the potential anchor tenant of this tower.
