Hypothetically, if this doesn't get built to full height and the base is only completed for now, could it potentially be even taller than currently proposed? If the conditions are right in a decade and demand substantially increases, a tenant might need even more space. Even if it is not probable, would it be possible with this foundation/base construction to increase the height of the final tower?

To be clear:
I am in no way suggesting that this will be the case. I am only asking if it is possible with what is being built right now. I don't want to hear about economic feasibility or the fact that it is already delayed because of lack of a big tenant. Just structurally would it be possible to increase the height?

i would imagine it to be similar to the case of the Shanghai world financial center. the foundations had already been laid but they wanted to make ti a bit higher so they had to change the design to make it lighter so it could use the old foundations and have more height. so it would be possible it would just be very time consuming in that a new design would be needed.

There is a building in Charlotte (I think) that looks like 2 WTC from one angle, but the diamond actually goes all the way through, so you can see it from both angles.

The Duke Energy building? I think it looks like SWFC, not 2WTC.

Maybe this is the angle you are talking about @ 24 seconds:

Yeah, it does look more like SWFC, but the slant also reminds me of 2 WTC.

That's your opinion. I think 122 Leadenhall looks good from any angle.

Then they will propose 6wtc. OKAY! Back to on-topic stuff. I bet by sometime in 2012 T2 and T3 will be above street level.

Only partial.. some columns of 2 WTC, and the core of 3 WTC are above street level. But I think "The tallest building" meant that the whole buildings are above street level in 2012, which will certainly happen, even if they stop construction after the retail floors..

"The current schedule builds the site to street level by mid-2012, and then allows for Silverstein Properties to continue construction as the market demands."

correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't SPI already indicate that they are gonna build the retail podiums for both 2 and 3 wtc without delay?

"Just north of “T4,” Tower 3 construction will continue initially to podium level, funded entirely by insurance proceeds. Full T3 completion would be financed with another $600 million in Port Authority, City of New York, and the State of New York subsidies -- but only if Silverstein is able to raise at least $300 million, secures additional Liberty Bonds, and sign leases with tenants. This strategy lets the private market drive the need for more commercial space at the WTC."

"Meanwhile, Tower 2 construction will continue to street level, with Silverstein allowed to start construction of the office tower based solely on market demand and its own capital investment. The development plan also implements a “cash trap” to ensure that the public stakeholders get paid back before Silverstein collects profits from the net cash flows of Towers 3 and 4."

Don't know if "street level" also includes some retail floors, but I guess if they don't start construction of the tower, they definately will build some retail floors, they would be stupid to leave the area unused in this location..

I think for 3 WTC they build 7 floors in any case (if I remember correctly)

The design is quite amazing, nevertheless the missing edge at the top of the building disturbes the form. Probably it woud look better with glass up to the very top of the structure.

IIRC, there is glass. It's just clear.

I 1000% agree with you, the tripod at the top should be a part of the building, not just a tripod spire

Lobby level floor is almost done! Maybe soon we'll see some steel extending a few dozen feet above ground.
