That was my personal prediction.

I thought about Adelaide, and after careful consideration, it was omitted from the final list.

Thank you, and good evening,
NZer.

I don't think they will have 2 million by 2030, or anywhere close to it. Isn't South Australia struggling compared to the other mainland states? Plus for an immigrant, the bigger city of Melbourne is a far more attractive prospect.

Not that projections are to be relied upon 100%, but I just checked the ABS and going by their estimations (which go to 2026, and 2056), Adelaide is not expected to have anywhere near 2 million inhabitants by 2026.

Perth is projected to have just under 2 million at 2026, and Auckland just under 2 million at 2031, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Somewhere in that Greater Adelaide plan the SA govt said they want Adelaide to reach 2 million to do this they plan to release huge tracts of land to the north, south and south-west of Adelaide and to expand out in MT Barker. But I think they had some good renders of these new satelite cities they looked real nice but it will be an up hill battle to get 700 000 more residents as you said most migrants want the eastern states or WA. As current population growth rate for ADL is only 17 000 per year it looks like it will reach about 1 650 000 by 2030. It will have to double its annual growth rate to reach the 2 million mark a real hard task for the city.

South Australia has long been tipped to become a major mining producer, a lot will depend on what happens in this regard.

Has South Australia become part of New Zealand? (The accents are pretty similar at least).

No offence meant to ADL but no Australians outside of SA care about its population, so why the f*** is it being discussed in a New Zealand population thread?

Do South Australians recognise that you sound different to the rest of us? You do have the clipped vowels that resemble Kiwis; e's sounding like i's, i's that resemble u's. Generally when I was there I found most people to accentuate correctly and pronounce clearly. Never once heard "hair yee gaan maate?" that you get all the time in Qld for instance.

It's as if all crow eaters learn to speak with a mind that one day they will eventually be reading the news on the ABC.

Sounds like South Australia know how to speak properly, unlike the rest of Aus who sound like they're got a peg clipped on their nose.

Queenslanders have horrible accents...if an NZer is making fun of Australian accents, they'll always do something that sounds like a Queensland one, as it is the most extreme example of an Aussie accent and grates the most on your ears. Anywhere else sounds quite nice.

We could start a new discussion about this:

When do you think the city of Tauranga will catch up/overtake with the city of Dunedin? Its growing faster and the gap is shrinking every year maybe only 10 000 gap between them now. So by 2020 the rank of NZ Cities might be:

1...Auckland
2...Christchurch
3...Wellington
4...Hamilton
5...Tauranga
6...Dunedin
7...Palmerston North
8...Nelson

It overtook Dunedin last year. That number 8 spot is a tricky one...currently it's held by Napier I believe. Really, it could be any number of places depending on potential economic growth industries...oil and gas for New Plymouth and Invercargill, while Nelson has it's attractive climate, as does Napier. There's also Rotorua, Hastings, and Whangerei. I can envisage Whangerei becoming a bit like Tauranga due to it's proximity to Auckland, it's just that it has a reputation as a small town. My friend who had been to Northland reckoned it and Kaitaia (pop 5000) to be about the same size! Rotorua had a decline in population recently I believe but that was after strong growth.

If NZ had of joined the Commonwealth like the rest of the colonies we could have a total population of like 26 million - Imagine how much more influential all the states combined would be. I associate NZ as being more similar to Tassie and Vic than the other Commonwealth states - althoug I've never been there...

Northland was where New Zealand was first settled, due to Maori uprisings it no longer became a main centre. It has a beautiful climate it is surprising it hasn't featured much on the forums. I still think the advent of Supercouncils may change the peaking order somewhat as well. I definetley think there are a few cities which could emerge as main centres over the coming decades in particular Tauranga, Invercargill and New Plymouth.

Here is the list of Urban Areas as defined by Statistics New Zealand. Not City Councils. Population of cities to 30 june 2008:

1 Auckland 1,313,200
2 Christchurch 382,200
3 Wellington 381,900
4 Hamilton 166,100
5 Tauranga 116,000
6 Dunedin 114,900
7 Palmerston North 79,800
8 Hastings 64,700
9 Nelson 58,700
10 Napier 57,900

As you can see this rankings put Napier at tenth place.

Oh interesting, Nelson/Richmond has overtaken Napier. Hastings I usually consider three separate towns.

Yeah, unfortunately most people do, not realising that Hastings CBD has a stronger economy than Napier. Hastings 3 'centres' is probably similar to how Nelson incorporates Richmond and Dunedin with Mosgeil.

I there may be a chance Napier and Hastings may amalgamate in the future, the debate seems to surface again and again. If this happens, Napier-Hastings (or Hawkes Bay City some have suggested ) will be the 5th largest city in the country for the time being as Stats NZ currently ranks it in terms of urban areas due to there being sufficient social integration between the two cities.

1 Auckland 1,313,200
2 Christchurch 382,200
3 Wellington 381,900
4 Hamilton 197,300
5 Napier-Hastings 122,600
6 Tauranga 116,000
7 Dunedin 114,900
8 Palmerston North 79,800
9 Nelson 58,700
10 Rotorua 55,600
11 New Plymouth 51,300
12 Whangarei 51,100
13 Invercargill 48,000
14 Wanganui 39,700
15 Kapiti 39,200
16 Gisborne 33,700

All this amalgamation/counting of small towns nearby (Nelson/Richmond), is dodgy if you ask me......

Feilding is less than 20kms down the road from Palmy. Combine those two alone and you close to 100k. But it wouldn't be on.....
