Japanese "towers"

Most major Japanese cities have their own landmark "tower" and I'm talking about freestanding ones and not high-rise buildings or skyscrapers.

Here are some of the most notable ones.

Tokyo Tower (1,091 ft)

Tsūtenkaku Tower (Osaka) (103 m)

Kyoto Tower (430 ft)

Kobe Port Tower (108 m)

Sapporo TV Tower (147.2 m)

Not me! I'm a guy Anyway, The Tsūtenkaku Tower is the oldest and coolest one in the bunch. It has a neon glow and effect to it.

A preview of it in 1912

I always wonder why the one in Osaka has "ears" like that. Do they have certain function?

Btw...the current pattern isn't the original one. It was like this...

and it was dismantled & melted down for war materials during WW II

Germany has a similar set of tall towers in it's major cities. I'm unsure as to the reason behind them.
