Airport trip to be made painless

Quote:
New BMTC project proposes non-stop ride from city to airport

IF the BMTC has its way, Bangalore will soon have signal-free travel to the airport.

The idea of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to the airport came from Upendra Tripathi, former commissioner of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

Smooth takeoff: The proposed Bus Rapid Transit system will have dedicated lanes that will bypass traffic signals and accompanying snarls file pic

The system proposes an exclusive corridor for Volvo buses in the existing six-lane road from Mekhri Circle to BIA, offering a non-stop ride to Bangalore International Airport (BIA).

Signal-free ride

Aiming at a seamless drive, service roads on either side of the Bangalore-BIA stretch will be converted to dedicated lanes and underpasses will be constructed. Once in place, the system will offer a signal-free drive for BMTC's Volvo buses, including the existing 58, plying to the airport.

"We have also asked for a dedicated lane in major arterial roads across the city," said Sampangiramgowda, DTO (divisional traffic officer), BMTC. "The dedicated lane work will be taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru New Urban Renewal Mission. We have also paid BDA Rs 50 lakh for a dedicated lane on the Outer Ring Road. We are expecting the state government's decision on similar lanes on other major roads too," he added.

Feasibility study

Out with the old: The BRT system will also feature a brand new set of Volvos

With over 11 million people visiting BIA every year, the number of people commuting on the stretch everyday is estimated to be 30,000. And it's 1,500 every hour.

Experts also carried out a feasibility study after Tripathi proposed the plan last year. The study found that a Volvo service every two minutes in the dedicated lane would bring down the number of cars by 25 in an hour.

"The system will drastically reduce traffic on the stretch. BMTC's revenue will also increase if people prefer this service," said Professor M N Shrihari, member of the technical committee which carried out the study.

Awaiting nod

However, transport officials are awaiting the state government's nod.

Transport minister R Ashok confirmed that the project was on the cards but said. "As of now, no decision has been taken in this regard."

Steps on to decongest Majestic bus station

Quote:
To decongest the Kempegowda bus station at Majestic, the BMTC has commissioned a study to analyse passenger preferences on travelling to the transport hub of the City.

At a presentation here, BMTC Managing Director Syed Zameer Pasha said passengers prefer to go to Majestic and this only adds to the problem of the already congested KBS. “To seek an expert opinion on ways and means to decongest the bus station and introduce point-to-point travel, we have commissioned the study to a consultant to analyse passenger preferences. The report is expected in two to four weeks’ time.”

He said that the corporation will construct 24 bus depots in the next three years. “Our plan is to have 600 buses by this year end and 10,000 buses in operation by 2011-12, so that the public can switch over to BMTC for travel. Our monthly pass sales have increased from 1.5 lakh to 2.5 lakhs, while daily pass sales have gone up from 60,000 to 1.7 lakhs. A recent report card by Public Affairs Centre, has rated 96 percent citizens’ satisfaction on BMTC services” he said.

Get off from Metro, hop on to BMTC

Quote:
BANGALORE: Road transport in the city will be integrated smoothly with another mode of transport -- Bangalore Metro. Compact BMTC bus bays will be built at Metro stations and commuters can use the services of KSRTC, BMTC and Metro Rail with a single ticket system.

"This is not a new thing but it'll be a unique experiment in India. In London, a person can travel by road, sea and Metro with a single ticket. We're trying to bring a similar integrated system in Bangalore too," transport secretary M K Shankarlinge Gowda told `The Times of India'.

As a first step, the transport department has started integrating KSRTC and BMTC ticket system. This was introduced in Bangalore rural and BMTC as a pilot project. In short, a passenger who boards a KSRTC bus in Anekal, Chennapattana and Ramanagar can use the ticket on BMTC buses in Bangalore.

"There was a problem of revenue sharing between the two organizations. But we went ahead and introduced it, which is working fine now. We were able to reduce ticket malpractice. We are planning to extend the system to other parts of the state," Gowda explained.

Using new system on Metro

The system needs to be fine-tuned for Metro Rail. "Currently, BMTC bus bays are far from metro stations. So we're trying to build small bus bays attached to Metro stations. A person alighting the train can use the same ticket and board a bus," Gowda said. "The passenger can use the same ticket for onward journey too."

- The seamless integration of multiple modes of transport is critical in creating a viable city-wide transportation system. This enables people to completely eliminate private transport in point-to-point commuting. Cities which have successfully developed public transport solutions like Singapore, London and so on have used this principle and this has been one of the key lessons learned from the initial woes of the Delhi Metro.

The use of a multi-modal transport card is an excellent move.

Poll code delays opening of TTMC

source:http://www.deccanherald.com/content/...ning-ttmc.html

Bangalore, DH News Service:

First, it was the delay in completion of the project. Now, the model code of conduct has come in the way of the Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) at Jayanagar 4th Block, from being declared operational.

The first TTMC of the City is now slated for inauguration on August 31, according to sources. Constructed by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme at a cost of Rs 14 crore, the project has received 35 per cent funds from the Ministry of Urban Development (MuD), Government of India, 15 percent from the State government and fifty percent from BMTC.

Syed Zameer Pasha, Managing Director of the State-run undertaking said that the TTMC is scheduled to be inaugurated by inviting both the Centre and State government representatives. “We are in touch with them (Centre). We should be able to open it by the end of this month” he said.

The TTMC has two floors of 13,000 sq ft each. While the ground floor is equipped with five platforms for bus commuters and rest rooms for the public, the first floor is expected to house BMTC pass-issuing counters, waiting hall and other facilities. Tenders have also been called by BMTC to allot space on the second floor for commercial establishments/shops.

The terrace is expected to accommodate about 40 cars and a hundred two-wheelers, for which ramps have been constructed to facilitate the entry of vehicles. Elevators for the public have also been included at the building.

JNNURM buses

Meanwhile, the BMTC has started plying 25 low-floor buses, funded under the JNNURM scheme on different routes, across the City. They were scheduled to be flagged-off at the inaugural of the Jayanagar TTMC.

These sky-blue buses sport a ‘JNNURM’ logo on its sides. Fares of these buses are on par with Suvarna services. A total of 700 such buses are expected to ply on the roads, in addition to two hundred Volvo Vajra and one hundred air-conditioned buses, all funded under JNNURM scheme at a cost of Rs 328 crore.

Metro Rail work to begin at KSRTC bus station soon

Quote:

BMRCL to take over 20 acres for underground stations

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to hand over portions of its land at the Kempe Gowda Bus Station to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) to facilitate construction of the underground Metro Stations.

While KSRTC will be shifting its three bus depots, including the one exclusively catering to the Volvo buses, behind its Central Office on K.H. Road by August 15, the shrinking of space will reduce the size of two-wheeler parking lots.

The depots are situated behind the KSRTC terminal while the two-wheeler parking lots are in front of the terminal.

Of the 20 acres of land, 7.5 acres will remain with BMRCL after construction of the stations. After completion of the metro stations, the central bus station will become the biggest inter-modal transit hub in the city with interchange facilities of Metro, city bus service (BMTC), intra-State and inter-State bus services (KSRTC and road transport corporations of other States) and the Railways (Bangalore City Railway Station). The two-wheeler parking lots accommodate nearly 1,500 vehicles at present and the KSRTC will try to accommodate at least 1,000 two-wheelers at the only parking lot it plans to retain for the public.

The car-park, which was on the left side of the terminal, has been shifted to an open space in front of Shantala Silks. A senior KSRTC official said operation of KSRTC bus services would not be affected for now. It had built two depots behind its Central Office to accommodate routes getting shifted from the bus station.

The corporation will utilise its Bangalore Rural Division’s Workshop near BHEL on Mysore Road to cater to the buses of the Central Division.

Construction of a divisional workshop to cater to the buses of the Rural Division at Ramanagaram was almost complete, the official said.

On its part, BMRCL will take possession of the land by August 15 and get them barricaded. The land where the KSRTC depots are situated at present will be used for the construction of two underground stations on the East-West and North-South corridors.

I think Delhi is well behind Banglore in terms of bus station development.
