Long time ago, KBS was an integrated bus station for Mofussil buses. With more and more buses coming into the city, the government decided it was enough, and started thinking of having Satellite bus station. The first one is already functional at Mysore Road. Three more are expected to be built - one on the Tumkur Road, another on Bellary Road and the third at Hosur Road.

According to the latest reports, the satellite stands would be at Old Madras Road, Peenya and Hosur Road. The one at Peenya would be the biggest (I think Hyderabad buses would be shifted here - from Peenya the buses could take the ring road to get on to Bellary Road) with about 7 acres of land.

The one on Old Madras Road would be at NGEF, while the one on Hosur road would be near Madiwala. (I wonder where is the land at Madiwala. I believe they are planning on the outer ring road).

Aren't they developing these stops as network nodes or hubs? Seems to be all are end points. What about onward journey if Bangalore is not the ultimate destionation? What plan is proposed to change over to other mode of mass transport? Do they have to travel with all the lagguages from one stop to another to change over buses? (say from hebbal to peenya having come from hyderabad and then going to mandya) What about people to different destionations within the city? Do they have to travel all the distance by taxi or autoriksha? I think better way is to distribute all buses to all destionaltions equally among all busstops.

The proposed Satellite bus stations would be terminating points for buses coming from specific areas i.e., Hosur Road Terminal for all buses from TN/Kerala (via Hosur), Mysore Road Terminal for all buses from Mysore side (including Kollegal), Peenya for Bellary Road/Tumkur/Hassan side and NGEF for Kolar side. Passengers would have to change over to local transportation to reach their destination.

Currently, something similar is happening with MCTC (Mysore road terminal). Although KSRTC claims to be operating efficient connecting buses between KBS and MCTC, the connectivity to MCTC is really poor.

Thats Shantinagar Bus Station, please. And which "out" stations do you mean?

Currently, all KaSRTC buses to Kerala/TN, via Mysore, originate from Shantinagar Bus Station. Similarly, all KaSRTC buses to Kerala/TN via Hosur, either originate there, or have a pick-up point there.

Wasn't my post clear enough? Or is it that I need to write destination wise?

All KaSRTC Semi-Deluxe/Rajahamsa/Meghadoota/Sheetal services to destinations in Tamil Nadu originate from Shantinagar BMTC Bus Terminus. Also KaSRTC Semi-Deluxe/Rajahamsa services to Kerala via Mysore originate at Shantinagar.

BMTC will ply more buses to help public

Slightly older news.

Quote:
The fleet of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation will be augmented with 1,000 buses at a cost of Rs 283 crore utilising the grants under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Transport Minister R Ashok, speaking to reporters here on Tuesday disclosed that 165 buses will be inducted by August 31 and the rest will be provided in a phased manner in the coming months. While JNNRUM will fund 30 pc of the cost, government will chip in 15 pc and the Corporation will bear the balance. As many as 25 buses will be added to the Atal Sarige fleet, the low-fare service for the benefit of economically disadvantaged sections. Out of 1,000 buses proposed to be purchased, 150 will be Volvo vehicles.

Truck terminals

Truck terminals will be constructed at three places Bangalore outskirts to keep truck traffic away from the City. The process of identifying lands on Bellary Road, Old Madras Road and Hosur Road has already begun. A truck terminal will also come up at Hospet in Bellary district. Each terminal will be spread over 25 acres and will have offices, dormitories for drivers, canteen and petrol and diesel bunks.

The government will soon hold a meeting with the four bidders for the proposed inter-nodal transit centre at Kempe Gowda Bus station in the City. The 350-crore project envisages construction of a 40-storey building housing the KSRTC, BMTC and Metro headquarters besides commercial centres. The meeting, convened in the wake of the economic slowdown will gather information on the readiness of the bidders in proceeding with the process.

Metro work

The existing Kempe Gowda bus station will be temporarily shifted to four places when the BMRCL takes up construction of the Metro station. The buses to various destinations will ply from Shantinagar, Mysore Lamp campus, Balekaimandi near Binny Mill and Bellary Road. The Metro station will come up in an area spanning seven acres in the 20-acre plot. The remaining 13 acre will be returned following which KSRTC and BMTC bus stations will be relocated.

Ashok said that 1,000 buses will be added to the KSRTC fleet, and 1,600 each to NWKSRTC and NEKSRTC in a phased manner. For the first time after 12 years, the government had appointed 100 brake inspectors. The process of recruiting additional 100 brake inspectors is underway. The new appointees will help in breaking the domination of the incumbent inspectors, the minister felt.

The foundation stone laying ceremony for construction of a bus station near Adichunchanagiri Math at Bellur in Nagamangala taluk will be held on August 20. The bus station will come up at a cost of Rs three crore on one-and-a-half acre of land provided by the Math, Ashok said.

* Buses to be inducted into BMTC in phased manner; 165 by August end.
* Proposal includes purchase of 150 Volvo buses.
*1,000 buses for KSRTC, 1,600 each for NWKSRTC and NEKSRTC respectively.
* Truck terminals at three places on City outskirts; one at Hospet.
* Kempe Gowda bus station to be shifted to four places.

Light up underpasses

Quote:

BANGALORE: While vehicles have gobbled up every inch of road space and commute time, pedestrians have been given their strips of safety in the form of underpasses. But most often than not, underpasses form the dark underbellies of the projects overhead. Dimly lit and sometimes locked, they are a major worry for citizens.

Good lighting was one of the suggestions that came up during a workshop on `Mobility indicator, parking policy and pedestrian policy' held in the city on Saturday. BMRCL MD Shiv Sailam interacted with the public, and heard their concerns and views.

"Any signal-free road project should also have suitable plans for pedestrians," said Divya, in her 20s. She brought to notice the deplorable condition of Sheshadri Road underpass, which has no proper lighting, and is unsafe for children and women. She also suggested that skywalks might be a good solution, but are not suitable at market places.

Raising questions over the use of public transport, an elderly person who introduced himself as `pedestrian', said, "People use their private vehicles for some reason. I suggest that BMTC officials use public transport themselves so they can understand the problems faced by the public."

Rakesh showed concern over the cutting down of trees for widening roads and even sidewalks. "Pedestrians need shade. Cutting down trees will add to their inconvenience."

Objectives

The Parking and Pedestrian Policy was the main attraction of the workshop. Gopi Prasad of Ides Consulting made the presentation and gave an insight into the problems and solutions. He cited the growing number of vehicles as the major area of concern and also suggested `regulation of old vehicles' to decrease parking load.

His concerns:

* Increase in number of vehicles
* Need for effective public transport
* Parking restrictions
* Safety of pedestrians
* Private participation in parking facilities

If any one could post some pictures of the Jayanagar TTMC! BTW i am sad that there is not much for parking here - 60 cars? I would have been good if there was multi level parking and not just the 3rd floor(which is the terrace i believe).

Yeddyurappa for extending JNNURM to entire State

Quote:

All-in-one: The BMTC Traffic and Transit Management Centre at Jayanagar 4th Block, in Bangalore.

BANGALORE: A modern Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC), which not only houses a bus terminal but also provides various other facilities such as parking for vehicles besides shops, a food court, a bank and a hospital, was inaugurated at Jayanagar Fourth Block here on Monday.

The Jayanagar TTMC, which is the first to be inaugurated among 10 such centres planned in various areas of Bangalore is built by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission of the Union Government at a cost of Rs. 12.9 crore.

The three-floor building of the TTMC has space for parking 60 cars and 150 two-wheelers on the terrace. The ground floor houses a bus-terminal, drinking water facility, toilets, police outpost and KSRTC reservation counters. The first floor has a health centre, post office counter, BangaloreOne Centre, a cyber café, public telephone booth, bank, ATM and air booking counter. The second floor has a food court, departmental store, book store and a fancy store among other establishments.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who inaugurated the terminal, urged the JNNURM authorities to extend such facilities to the entire State. He promised to fulfil the dreams of people with respect to infrastructure development in Bangalore during his tenure. Referring to the ongoing development works in every ward of the BBMP, he appealed to people to bring to the notice of the government any instances of sub-standard works. “Do not tolerate substandard works,” he told people.

Transport Minister R. Ashok said construction of the remaining nine TTMCs being taken up in different areas of Bangalore in the first phase will be completed by July 2010. These TTMCs will come up at Shantinagar, Koramangala, ITPL, Kengeri, Vijayanagar, Banashankari, Yeshwanthpur, Domlur and Bannerghatta. Another 10 TTMCs would be built in the second phase in different areas, he noted.

More JNNURM buses

Quote:
BANGALORE: Bangaloreans will get more number of hi-tech buses to commute. As many as 200 buses, which have been purchased under the JNNURM scheme of the Centre, will be flagged off in Bangalore on September 5 by Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy.

BMTC Managing Director Syed Zameer Pasha told presspersons on Monday that Bangalore will get a total of 1,000 buses with the JNNURM assistance of Rs,. 323 crore. About 200 buses from these were being inaugurated now and the remaining would join the fleet soon.

Each bus would cost about Rs. 21 lakh, of which 35 per cent of the cost was borne by the Government of India while the State Government was chipping in 15 per cent of the cost. Remaining 50 per cent of the cost was taken care of by the BMTC, he noted.

The BMTC paradox

Quote:
Though the blue buses sponsored by the central government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) have some sophisticated features like a semi low-floor body and snazzy interiors, the ticket rates in these buses are much lower than those in Suvarna buses (which are ranked by BMTC as the second-best after the high-end Volvo Vajra fleet).

Bangalore to get 40-storyed Transit Centre

Slightly old news missed to quote.

Quote:
BANGALORE, AUGUST 18, 2009: Transport Minister R. Ashok on Tuesday said that the work on the 40-storeyed Rs. 650-crore Inter Model Transit Centre (IMTC), with a commercial complex to be built Majestic bus-stand in the city would be commenced soon.

The building will be built after demolishing the existing KSRTC-BMTC bus station. Four bidders, including the Larsen & Toubro, shown keen interest to developed the project, he said.

Addressing the media, Mr Ashok had asked the Managing Director of the BMTC to convene a meeting of the four bidders who participated in the bid process two years ago for constructing the IMTC complex. The building would house Bangalore Metro, Indian Railways, KSRTC and BMTC offices, besides renting out commercial space in the proposed Rs 650 crore project. ''The project will be implemented under Private Public Participation (PPP) model,'' he said.

During the construction of the central building, makeshift bus stands are proposed at different places in the city and the requisite land for this would be identified. Another bus stand would be built at the airport.

The Metro Rail Corporation, he said, will resume work at the busy majestic bus-stand for which the BMTC would give 20 acres of land.

The new transit complex will serve passengers arriving by the Metro Rail, at the city railway station and the KSRTC and BMTC.

He said the government would build bus stands on a 10-acre plot of NGEF on Old Madras Road and a five-acre plot at Peenya, which had earlier been given to the Metro Rail.

A bus stand would be built at Bellur Cross in Nagamangala taluk on land donated by the Adichunchanagiri Math at a cost of Rs. 3 crore.

The Minister said the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation will buy 1,000 new buses this year under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission to improving the transport services. Of the 1,000 buses, 165 had arrived and they will in service from August 31.

Tata and Ashok Leyland had completed trial runs in the city. The fleet will include 150 Volvo buses. All the 1,000 buses will be in service by December this year.
