In the same forum I read about posh bus terminus coming up in Chandigarh and Mohali.... but that is an interstate bus terminus... but this is more bangalore centric serving the BMTC, Bangalore metro majorly though interstate buses will also be served...

Dumb design. Why is the pillar/staircase of the skybridge bang in the middle of the sidewalk? The skybridge could easily have gone directly into the TTMC and staircase could have been provided within the TTMC thus freeing up space on the sidewalk for smooth pedestrian movement.

There was a proposal earlier to include the roads within TTMC.
What about Jayanagar Shoping Complex reconstruction?

I had a look at Jayanagar TTMC about a week ago. I have two pics taken on my cellphone i will post it soon. My opinion is that it just did not change anything for the commuter other than making it dark inside. May be once the utility services like B1 and other shops come up, it would make a difference, but still it took so long to build something sooooo small. It seems these public service providers have a tendency to build these stations and setup their office more then build say a mega parking lot, which Jayanagar so badly needs. Missed opportunity to do something really useful to the Jayanagar area. Sad!

My house is in the Jayanagar 3rd block area and whenever I have been to bangalore, I see vehicles parked on both sides of the road in the cross road which makes it difficult for people living there to even take their cars out . There was some talk going on to include a part of the ground behind cosmopolitan club and build a parking lot there.. can any one update on that if they know anything

Parking lots to go private

Quote:
Central Parking Services (CPS), a Bangalore headquartered company, has announced its plans to open stand alone parking lots spread across various areas in the City. The first parking lot is expected to begin functioning in 2010.

CPS Managing Director Sathyanarayanan said these parking lots would be developed in collaboration with land owners, private developers and municipal projects. The lots can handle 80 to 400 cars and spread across the City including CBD areas, Koramangala, Jayanagar, Rajajinagar, Malleswaram, Whitefield, Indiranagar.

All these parking lots would be equipped with computerised parking management systems. Vehicle owners can buy a single card and use the facility across all parking lots managed by CPS.

The news may not be directly related to bus transportation. But, whether these parking facilities are coming up near bus stations and metro stations also so that people can switch over to mass transportation leaving their cars at parking lots. Big MNCs can have their own parking lots to switch over to mass transportation.

BBMP may invite tenders for bus stand complex at Kalasipalyam soon

Quote:
BANGALORE: Transport Minister and Bangalore in-charge R. Ashok on Saturday said that he would direct the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to invite tenders afresh for construction of a bus stand complex at Kalasipalyam here.

He was addressing presspersons here after attending the 185th anniversary of Kittur Rani Chennamma’s victory against the British. The celebrations were a low-key affair in the wake of the recent floods in north Karnataka. The event was marked by garlanding the statue of Chennamma at Ravindra Kalakshetra.

Mr. Ashok said though the BBMP had invited tenders for the construction of the bus station, it did not materialise owing to pressure from some quarters.

On the introduction of new buses by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), the Minister said 250 new buses funded under JNNURM would be introduced in the first week of November. The Minister said that buses that had run over six lakh km would be phased out. He said 750 more buses would be introduced in Bangalore in the next four months.

In an effort to reduce pollution in Bangalore, eco-friendly green autorickshaws would be introduced in November. “Such autorickshaws will have four-stroke engines powered by gas and digital meter facility. They will help in reducing the pollution level,” he said.

The Transport Department would observe “Parisar Divas” in November as the number of children affected by asthma was increasing in the city. A rally would be organised from the Vidhana Soudha to raise awareness, he said. On the proposal to build a bus station of international standards at Subashnagar, Mr. Ashok said action had been taken to get approval from the Chief Secretary-level committee.

New JN-NURM buses more user-friendly

Quote:
BANGALORE: Just when you thought there were no more roads for more buses in the city, JN-NURM announced a one-time grant for 1,000 new buses for Bangalore. And, they have been subtly making their entry in phases.

The formal programme to release these blue-coloured buses was put on hold. But as one cannot keep such assets waiting for long, given audit requirements, currently, 140 air-conditioned buses are plying in the city.

As for the rest, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is going into very minute specifications. A BMTC official told TOI that there would be 200 A-C Volvo buses with a floor height of 400 mm, 702 buses of 900 mm and 98 buses of 650 mm. Why is floor height important? "The lower floor heights are helpful for old people and children," explained the official. The height of buses is a common problem faced by several passengers; regular BMTC buses are at a height of 1000 mm.

The BMTC is fixing several add-ons to the new buses -- vinyl mats, plastic moulded seats, etc. The 1000 buses were all to be hit the roads over a couple of months ago. But the deadline has been pushed to end-2009 due to manufacturers' delay in supply.

The corporation, apart from sending buses to other sister corporations, has a target of scrapping at least 400 buses every year. This, it says, will pave the way for new buses to come in without causing too much burden on the roads.

Raw deal: BMTC sources reveal that, like in other handouts, the state didn't get the cream of JN-NURM's funds. While the central scheme gives support usually to infrastructure development projects, this one-time support to buy buses and ease traffic congestion was also given to several other urban areas. Karnataka was given Rs 323.82 crore, 50% of which is to funded by urban local bodies, 35% by the central government and 15% by the state government.

Despite stray misgivings about the quantum of funds, the varied colour-schemed buses are quietly replacing the familiar blue-and-white ones in the city.

BMTC FLEET

* Total -- 5,400
* Pushpaks, mini buses, others -- 4820 (approx)
* Suvarna -- 300 (approx)
* Vajra buses -- 280

Feeder route survey: HC notice to BMTC

slightly older news

Quote:
BANGALORE: The High court on Tuesday issued notice to the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on a petition seeking direction in implementation of final consultancy report on feeder route survey.

While hearing the petition filed by N Parameshwaran, the Division bench headed by Chief Justice P D Dinakaran issued the notice to Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

The petitioner has stated that BMTC has not bothered to implement his report on effective implementation of feeder route-trunk route system to solve the city’s traffic problem. Instead of implementation of feeder survey report, the BMTC is implementing the Rs 400-crore Traffic and Transit Management Census (TTMC) project, which is unscientific and time consuming, the petitioner argued in his petition.

A Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus toppled after hitting a road divider near Mutthanallur cross on Sarjapur Road near Sulikunte on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Whitefield traffic police station, around 8.30am. Police said the bus driver tried to overtake a school bus, when he lost control and rammed into a divider.

There were only about 20 passengers in the bus at the time of the incident. Other people on the road too suffered injuries, though many who sustained minor injuries, left the sceneimmediately. Among the seriously injured were four persons identified as Muniswamy, Radhakrishna, Lakshmaiah and Anjanappa; the driver Satish too suffered injuries.

Police said that Muniswamy suffered serious injury in the legs, while Radhakrishna has one arm seriously injured. Lakshmaiah is under treatment at St John's Hospital.

Muniswamy and Satish have been admitted to the Balaji Nursing Home at Dommsandra.
The bus was travelling to Shanthinagar from Kootaganahalli, on route number 342. Police have arrested the driver.

Muniswamy said, "The accident was caused by the negligence of the driver, as he was trying to overtake other vehicles. Fortunately, no one died."

Quote:
Banglore: The state cabinet on Wednesday approved a grant of Rs40 crore to improve traffic management in Bangalore. This comes in the wake of the enormous increase in vehicles on city roads.

Bangalore to get local trains

Staff Reporter

Trains to Yeshwanthpur, Yelahanka

BMTC to adopt hi-tech methods of administration

BANGALORE: Trains will be introduced from Bangalore City Railway station to Yeshwanthpur, K.R. Puram and Yelahanka on the outskirts of the City, besides Tumkur and Mysore, said Bangalore South Lok Sabha MP Ananth Kumar.

Speaking on the occasion of flagging off 380 buses sanctioned under the JNNURM scheme here on Sunday, Mr Ananth Kumar, who is also the Vice Chairman of ABIDE, said the railways’ project would bring about the type of connectivity local trains provided in Mumbai.

He said that this system would help the population of Bangalore. He said that with the increase of the volume in traffic to a staggering 37 lakh vehicles, an additional 1,000 buses to the existing 5,610 buses would reduce 40 per cent of the congestion.

These 380 buses, which were flagged off on Saturday, were already plying on the city’s roads. Each of them are low-floored Volvo and Mercedes Benz buses, and can seat about 32 people. They have eco-friendly BS3 diesel engines, with air suspension automatic doors, and four LED nameplates.

Transport Minister R. Ashok said that it was the responsibility of the Transport Department to provide efficient public transport.

“We have schemes in the pipeline for students, women and senior citizens. For students for below the seventh standard, we will provide free tickets,” he said. He said that a discount of 25 per cent would be given to women passengers and subsidies for senior citizens would also be provided. He said that among his plans for the BMTC, electronic ticketing devices and GPS tracking would get priority to take the bus corporation into a more advanced mode of functioning.

Mr. Kumar added that the BMTC was planning to start a “Vidya Sarige” scheme, under which they would ply buses for schoolchildren.

It would be nice if they develop separate track for cycling too, in the city roads. Everybody should get their shares in the roads, pedestrians, cyclists, motorists...

The bus stops here Majestic station to be shut for 3 years

The bus stops here Majestic station to be shut for 3 years

The inter-state and intra-state bus service hub will make space for the Metro. The bad news: Commuters will pay a price because the alternatives to the KSRTC bus station, which handles 2,700 buses, are underprepared to take the load

Srikanth Hunasavadi & Shwetha S. Bangalore

Outstation bus travellers, entering or leaving the city, can expect severe inconvenience in the days to come.
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus station in Majestic, a major inter-city transport hub, will be shut down next week for three years to make way for Namma Metro works, transport minister R Ashok said on Thursday. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus stand, however, will continue its local schedules from the existing location, the minister said.
Utter chaos is expected as the transport department is shifting the KSRTC's outstation services to satellite bus terminals, which are not ready to take the sudden increase in passenger and bus traffic. The Majestic bus station sees around 2,700 arrivals and departures everyday. Apart from destinations in Karnataka, buses also run from Bangalore to Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Goa.
However, all these outstation service operations will now be shifted to satellite bus terminals in Shantinagar, NGEF, Hebbal, Kengeri (Mysore Rd), and Balekai Mandi, Ashok said. Many train travellers going and coming from the railway station, opposite the Majestic bus station, will be forced to travel to the satellite bus terminals, some on the city's outskirts.
Some of these bus terminals, like Shantinagar and Kengeri, have limited capacity to handle operations. The other bus terminals are yet to commence infrastructure works to sustain bigger passenger volumes and run increased number of outstation bus services.
KSRTC officials said commuters would face problems at the satellite bus terminals simply because of poor planning. Gaurav Gupta, Managing Director of KSRTC, admitting that commuters would face inconvenience, said they would try and minimise the discomfort
