Transit centre to make commuting a breeze
TNN | May 25, 2011, 03.58am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: The city's ninth traffic and transit management centre (TTMC) became operational on Tuesday.

The new TTMC at Yeshwantpur is the first to introduce the concept of a two-level bus station. It is equipped with eight bays and 18 platforms for 30 bus operations at a time.

Transport minister R Ashoka unveiled plans to add 200 more hi-tech buses to the BMTC fleet. This, considering the increase in number of public transport commuters from 40 lakh to 48 lakh in recent times. There are also plans to extend similar luxury bus services to rural areas. "Such services are highly essential for development of every village in Karnataka," he said.

Elaborating on the long-awaited bus rapid transit system (BRTS) in the city, Ashoka said the first reach from Hebbal to Silk Board Junction will be completed soon. Estimated at Rs 20 crore, the BRTS will have buses plying along signal-free corridors dedicated to buses. "This line will be cheaper. There will be buses every two minutes at stations along the corridor," Ashoka explained.

INSURANCE SCHEME

An insurance scheme will be launched for students in case BMTC buses meet with accidents. This will include Rs 1-lakh compensation for deaths and Rs 20,000 for injuries which will be paid by the transport corporation itself. Use of alternate fuel in buses was announced to reduce pollution. "These buses will be subject to a three-month trial first," the minister said.

The last TTMC at Banashankari, under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURm), is expected to be operational shortly. The new TTMCs planned under public-private partnership (PPP) are expected to come up at Hebbal, Jayanagar, Kathriguppe and Indiranagar.

WHAT YESHWANTPUR CENTRE HAS

* A two-level bus station with eight bays and 18 platforms for 30 bus operations at a time
* BMTC offices and public amenities on five floors above station houses
* Adjacent 20-level parking building for 450 four-wheelers and 200 two-wheelers
* Drinking water facility and modern toilets (for the disabled too)
* Counters for bus passes & KSRTC reservation

Total cost: Rs 91.9 crore

BMTC to hike insurance cover for students

Quote:
BANGALORE: Home and Transport Minister R. Ashok on Tuesday said the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will enhance the insurance cover for student pass-holders from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh in case of death and from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 in case of injury.

Speaking after inaugurating the Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) at Yeshwanthpur here, Mr. Ashok said the insurance coverage will benefit a large section of students, since over three lakh students are availing themselves of BMTC student passes every year.

The corporation, Mr. Ashok said, had been offering insurance coverage to its regular monthly pass-holders for many years and it proved to be beneficial to the commuting public.

While the Yeshwanthpur TTMC is built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) — with 30 per cent funding from the Union Government, 20 per cent from the State and the rest by the corporation, — BMTC will build new design TTMCs under public-private partnership at Hebbal, Jayanagar, Kathriguppe and Indiranagar. New bus depots will come up at Banashankari, Hoskote, Dasanapura, Kodathi, Gunjur and Shivanapura at a cost of Rs. 20 crore, Mr. Ashok added.

Notwithstanding the corporation's failure to procure even a single new bus during 2010-11 despite making promises of additions to the existing fleet, the Minister made a similar assurance of procuring 1,000 buses complying to BS IV emission standards and 200 airconditioned integrated monocoque buses this year. He also promised to start 500 new schedules.

The Yeshwanthpur TTMC, built at a cost of Rs. 91.9 crore, has a two-level bus station that comprises eight bus bays and 18 platforms to accommodate 30 departures at a time.

The five upper floors house commercial and office spaces, including KSRTC ticket reservation counters, information system, ATMs, shopping centres and food court. An adjacent 20 levels multi-level parking building provides parking facilities for 450 four-wheelers and 200 two-wheelers.

Adichunchanagiri Math seer Balagangadharanatha Swamiji, Mayor Sharadamma, Malleswaram MLA C.N. Ashwathanarayana, Raja Rajeshwari Nagar MLA M. Srinivas,

BMTC Vice Chairman and Bangalore South MLA M. Krishnappa, BMTC Managing Director K.R. Srinivasa and others were present.

You might see it on the route of either BIAS 6 or BIAS 8.
They usually test new buses on ITPB/Electronics City/Bannerghatta/BIAL routes.
Since this is a dedicated bus for airport it might be in BIAL-Kadugodi or BIAL-EC .

Integrated transport, a step beyond
Published: Friday, May 27, 2011, 12:17 IST
Place: London | Agency: ANI

Quote:
Speakers at Metro Rail 2011 on Thursday discussed transport system beyond mass rapid transit (MRT).

“Our cities have all grown and so has the population. Indian government had earlier advocated mass rapid transit in cities where population is above 10 million. But MRT is not enough. We need to think of multi-modal integrated sustainable transport system,” said Professor MN Sreehari, advisor to GoK on traffic, transportation and infrastructure at the outset of the meet.

During the discussions, the present structure of transport system appeared too weak to serve the needs of the public and to address the adverse effects it can create on environment.

A study found that only 35% of people use public transport in Bangalore against 54% in Kolkata which scored the highest. The reason is that the equity of facilities that the transport systems are extending is differential,” said Pawan Kumar, assistant chief planner, Town and Country Planning Organisation, New Delhi.

Metro or air-conditioned Volvo buses have been deployed in all cities to serve the middle and high income groups. Slum-dwellers have been left out on the presumption that they do not need such modes of transport. This is a wrong concept, Kumar said.

He spoke of six ways of integrating transport systems in Bangalore - network, fare, information, physical, financial and institutional integration to help bring all modes of transport to a level where seamless travel can be enjoyed by one and all. “Most of the times, be it in Delhi or in Bangalore, we have seen that buses and Metro are aligned along the same routes. This leaves some of the areas rarely touched by buses. People depend on private vehicles then,” he said Pawan. There is need of network integration. Officials should sort out how feeder buses can take the job of connecting bus routes to Metro stations.

Kumar appreciated Bangalore Metro and BMTC for having come together and signed a deal for a single pass which can be used in both Metro and bus for seamless travel. He said all metro rail corporations should think on the same lines.

“In Delhi, they have been able to design the Metro in such a way that it connect to facilities like the airport. Our Metro should also be aligned in such a manner,” he said.

All stakeholders should benefit from the operations of the metro and bus and other modes of transport integrated. There should be one controlling authority for all modes of transport which calls for institutional integration.

Experts have to experiment with ideas to face challenges posed by terrorists. “There is a softwareto detect the impact of energy released and check if the track design is strong enough to sustain the pressure. The Metro authoritieshave to experiment and bring hi-tech safety to Metro rail,” he added.
God knows if data is correct.

Seeing the number of 2 wheelers on the road and the indifferent attitude of BMTC to launching new routes as per residents requests, it probably is true.

Eco-friendly Corona buses soon to hit Bangalore roads
By Staff Reporter Published: May 31 2011

Quote:
BMTC introduces eco-friendly Corona buses in an attempt to reduce pollution levels in the city

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced an eco-friendly ‘Corona Bus’ on a trial run between Kempegowda Bus Station and Bangalore International Airport. This initiative by the BMTC is an attempt to reduce pollution levels in ‘Namma’ Bengaluru. This bus has a pollution free mechanism and has received a positive feedback from commuters.

BMTC plans to add ‘Coronas’ to its fleet of buses after a few more trial runs on other routes. To control pollution and to comfort passengers BMTC had introduced Volvo buses which are Euro-3 buses. The Corona bus is an improved version. It is eco-friendly with minimal emission levels.Officials at BMTC claim to get excellent response from commuters. They have started a Corona bus between Majestic and BIAL. They also plan to run it between Majestic- ITPL and Majestic-Electronic City routes.

BMTC has already introduced 6,200 buses in the city and plans to add 1000 more. The government claims to introduce 3000 Bharat Stage IV buses in the coming three years. These buses too are eco-friendly and have low emission levels.BMTC Corona buses also have an auto-transmission technology which makes travel smooth and jerk free.
1000 buses every year is a good show. Also good move this year they did not buy buses as Euro-4 buses were not available.

I hope, people USE these buses.
No point having buses if people don't use them.
Also, BMTC should introduce new routes...
WHICH don't touch the Central Areas.
