I beg to differ. BMTC's brand new Volvos and MarcoPolos are already in bad shape. Compared with the BESTs 5yr old Bus, which still looks brand new..
Chennai must first of all get rid of those vertical sliding windows....I will take pic next time to show that the anchorage gets broken as it is made of some cheap plastic and there wud be no support to hold the window.........I can't imagine traveling during summer days in chennai choked inside a bus with windows closed not intentionally but due to malfunctioning of the anchor.

Mumbai I agree rocks in terms of their bus fleet maintenance.

Bangalore probably got Volvo buses when other cities were dreaming of new Ashley buses,Some volvos in Bangalore which are old look bad but arent that bad as I see some buses in other cities.

Ashok proposes more bus stations in City

Quote:
To ensure better connectivity within the City, the Government plans to construct a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus stand within every five kilometres, announced Transport Minister R Ashok.

Speaking at a function organised on Tuesday to inaugurate the BMTC’s Bande Maramma bus stand at Nagarabhavi 9th block, Ashok said that construction of ten new bus stands in different parts of Bangalore were nearing completion.

“An additional ten bus stands will be constructed in Jayanagar, Indiranagar and Padmanabhanagar under Public-Private Partnership model,” he said. The PPP concept has been approved in a recent board meeting, Ashok added.

The minister also said that the industry department has agreed to provide ten acres of land belonging to the Government Soap Factory on Dr Rajkumar Road at Yeshwanthpur to KSRTC, to carry out some of its operations.

This was necessary for the KSRTC, since its bus terminal at Majestic had to be partially shifted due to the ongoing Namma Metro rail work. The minister also said that a sum of Rs 52 lakh would be released shortly to provide concrete flooring for the Bande Maramma bus stand.

BMTC Managing Director Syed Zameer Pasha informed that the Nagarabhavi bus stand was constructed at a cost of Rs 35 lakh. “It houses a traffic control room, bus pass distribution counter, drinking water taps and toilet facilities besides a hotel.” Buses from the bus stand will be run to Kempegowda Bus Terminal, K R Market, Shivajinagar, Yeshwanthpur and Jayanagar 9th block routes. Ashok also flagged off two new buses.

CITY bus service embarks on E-display experiment

Quote:
LED system to be put up at stops, in buses if pilot project succeeds

Taking a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus is set to become easier with LED display boards at bus stops to guide commuters. Such display boards will also be installed inside the buses and, coupled with audio announcements, will enable commuters, especially those new to a route, to know where to get off.

The move comes as part of the Passenger Information System (PIS) that aims to electronically display bus routes and bus numbers at over 3,000 bus stops.

The pilot project is being conducted at Residency Road bus stop near Baldwin school. Based on the response, the initiative will be extended to the other bus stops in phases.

Sampangiram Gowda of the BMTC, said, "The system is installed at Shanthinagar bus stand. But the Residency Road bus stop is the first one to be part of our bigger plan. We will have many such displays across the city, shortly."

Going hi-tech

The new LED boards, say experts, will provide commuters with latest information about buses plying to various destinations, a vast improvement over manually-painted boards that are in use now and which can not provide quick updates.

"The bus routes keep changing from time to time and instant information is not available on manual boards. As these boards are electronic and controlled by a master facility, commuters can be provided with updated information instantly, which makes their travel easy," said Prof M N Shrihari, a traffic expert.

The audio announcement along with display inside buses will follow once the display system at the Residency Road stop proves successful.

No Hindi?

"The display of information and announcement at every stop inside buses and at bus stops will be both in Kannada and English. It will help the newcomers too," added Gowda.

The experts are also worried about the details of the service.

"Such systems can be well managed by GIS and GPS, the way it's usually done in Metro trains. But maintaining accurate timings is a big challenge," added Shrihari.

BMTC buses are killing less people now

Quote:
BANGALORE: Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), which had recorded the highest number of deaths and fatal accidents involving its buses in 2007, seems to be redeeming itself.

Thanks to the frequent training and counselling imparted to its drivers by the BMTC —that had earned the name ‘Killer BMTC’—its authorities can now heave a sigh of relief.

Data for last two years reveal that there has been a marginal fall in the number of reported deaths and fatal accidents due to BMTC buses despite an increase in the number of buses.

In 2007, the number of deaths and fatal accidents was 113 and 113 respectively. However, in 2008 the number of deaths and fatal accidents came down to 96 and 95 respectively, and in 2009 the number stood at 88 and 85 respectively.

From 1999 to 2009, BMTC buses have killed 849 people and have been involved in 819 fatal accidents.

The reasons cited by the BMTC drivers for the accidents are: phenomenal rise in the city’s vehicular population, deadlines and fuel mileage set by the authorities.

Divisional Traffic Officer (Accident Section) of BMTC Nitin Hegde said that the identified in-service accident-prone and low kilometres per litre drivers are now being trained at Ashok Leyland’s training institute in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu; besides being trained in the BMTC’s training centre at Shantinagar.

He further added that safety teams have been formed in all depots.

The official said that frequent training and counselling to BMTC bus drivers has helped in bringing down the accident graph.

These stupid media people terming the lifeline of Bangalore as 'Killer Machines' ?
Imagine a day of Bangalore without BMTC. The city will come to standstill.
With 5500 buses carrying more than 5 million people a day, road accidents are unavoidable, even if you have the best infrastructure in the world. I am glad that number of accidents and deaths have come down when road conditions didnt improve much and we should thank BMTC for their efforts. I agree some drivers are wreckless but we can't blame BMTC as a whole.

Remember Mumbai local trains carry 6 million people a day and in media terms, they kill 10 people a day.

BMTC plans ‘Bus Day’

BANGALORE: Now, leave your vehicle at home and board a BMTC bus to work and for commuting to other places on 'Bus Day’ every month.

In an attempt to create awareness on the advantages of using mass transportation, BMTC and the transport department are organising the `Bus Day’ on the 4th day of every month this year.

The concept will kickstart on February 4. To start with, it will be observed on two identified IT corridors — from the City Centre to ITPL and from the City Centre to Electronics City. Commuters will be requested to leave their motor vehicles at home and travel in buses on `Bus Day’.

They can even travel in their company buses or private buses.

Transport secretary Shankarlingegowda and BMTC MD Syed Zameer Pasha said that the concept gave details to reporters about 'Bus Day' on Tuesday.

"Companies in ITPL have promised cooperation," Gowda said. Pasha said that BMTC has geared up to provide additional buses that day.

Ultra-modern bus terminal for Yeshwantpur

Quote:
Bangalore: The state government has decided to build an ultra-modern bus terminal in Yeshwantpur, on the lines of the satellite bus terminus on Mysore Road, to ease traffic congestion on Tumkur Road and the pressure on the Kempe Gowda bus stand. The new terminal will come up on a 10-acre land belonging to the now defunct Mysore Lamps.

“We have decided to build a mega bus terminal in Yeshwantpur to ease the pressure on the Kempe Gowda bus stand, the main terminal for KSRTC buses,” transport minister R Ashok said on Friday. “Buses plying towards North Karnataka, Mangalore and Shimoga can use the new terminal,” he said. Almost 70% of KSRTC buses plied in the Tumkur route, Ashok noted.

“The state-owned, and now defunct, Mysore Lamps was closed down after it suffered heavy losses,” Ashok said. “It owed Rs180 crore, which was taken as a loan, to the state government. The state commerce and industries department has decided to sell the company’s 25 acres of land to recover the loss,” he said. “We have sought 10 acres of land. The department has agreed in principle to sell the land to the KSRTC, but the payment modalities are yet to be finalised.”

He said the Majestic bus stand would be shifted in stages to make way for the Metro. Ashok also announced that the state transport department would issue free passes to family members of armed forces’ personnel who had laid down their lives defending the country. The passes would be issued to the wives and parents of the martyrs, he said.

He said the KSRTC was adopting various measures to increase revenue. Allowing advertisements on buses was one of them. It was also planning to start its own courier services, he said.

Bus rapid transit system project report ready

Quote:
* Civic agencies to thrash out the ways and means of implementing the BRTS on Silk Board – Hebbal corridor
* Dedicated lanes are likely to be located on the middle of the road
* Huge investment is required to accommodate BRT corridors

BANGALORE: The bus rapid transit (BRT) that offers seamless travel across the city through dedicated bus lanes is finally taking shape with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) preparing the detailed project report for the Silk Board Junction-Hebbal corridor on the outer ring road (ORR).

The 35-km stretch of the ring road has 17 junctions which are to be modified to accommodate dedicated bus lanes to offer unhindered movement. BDA has entrusted the task of preparing the DPR to Infrastructure Development Corporation Karnataka Ltd. and the draft report is almost ready. The same will be discussed at a meeting of the Bangalore Metropolitan Land Transport Authority this week and the final report will be ready after incorporating changes, if any, suggested, said BDA Member (Engineering), R. Srinivasa.

Right in the middle

The dedicated lanes are likely to be located on the middle of the road and the bus routes will have the flexibility to join or leave the corridor at any intersections, said Mohammad Mohsin, Commissioner, BMLTA and Director, Urban Land Transport Authority. While all intersections may have bus stops at approach arms utilising the “red time” at the intersections, some stops may also be provided at midblock locations which have high passenger catchment.

Mr. Srinivasa said huge investment is required to accommodate BRT corridors on the existing roads and it is yet to be decided who will bear the cost, whether the Government, the BDA or the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation. On its part, BDA is constructing the new flyovers on ring roads in such a manner so as to accommodate dedicated corridors, he added.

Guidelines

As per the preliminary guidelines, the road width has to be increased to accommodate three motor vehicle lanes, one dedicated bus lane and one non-motor vehicle lane on either direction, Mr. Mohsin said. At intersections, one each additional lanes for motor vehicles and buses have to be provided. While pedestrian crossing facility could be provided through at-grade signalled crossing, lanes for motor vehicles and buses have to be physically segregated, he said. The Silk Board-Hebbal corridor is being undertaken on pilot basis and 13 more corridors could have the bus rapid transit system as suggested by the Comprehensive Transport and Traffic Plan for Bangalore, Mr. Mohsin said. BRTS is already under operation in Ahmedabad where 25 BRTS buses ply on a 12.5 km stretch from RTO to Chandra Nagar. This is the first full-fledged BRTS in the country as similar projects in Delhi and Pune did not have systems like control room, IT infrastructure, dedicated buses, etc.

BMTC Managing Director Syed Zameer Pasha said the corporation is keen on running buses on the dedicated corridors to offer faster services to the commuting public. He said once the corridor is ready, deployment of buses will not be an issue for the corporation as it has sufficient numbers in its fleet.

Feedback may be sent to Mr. Mohsin at “ mmiask@gmail.com” or “ dultbangalore@gmail.com.”

‘A good public transport system can overcome traffic woes in Bangalore’

Quote:
* Officer for expansion of bus system to attract people using private vehicles

BANGALORE: An Indian Police Service officer, who once managed Bangalore’s traffic and is presently looking after operations of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), has made a serious attempt to look into the ground realities that affect smooth movement of traffic in metros and possible solutions.

His study into the issues, compiled into a thesis, has got him the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) degree from Bangalore University.

Meet M.A. Saleem, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, presently working as Director (Security and Vigilance), KSRTC, who has presented his thesis on “Traffic management in metropolitan cities - a framework to provide sustainable strategies to overcome traffic congestion and ensure greater safety on roads”.

Steep increase

Taking Bangalore as one of the examples, Mr. Saleem in his study focussed mainly on the steep increase in the number of vehicles — 1.46 lakh in 1978 to 6.84 lakh in 1992 and to 31 lakh in 2007. Of the 37 lakh vehicles, over 88 per cent are personal vehicles — motorcycles and cars.

Lack of adequate mass transport system, growing economic prosperity, radial pattern of road network, absence of parking infrastructure, mixed land use pattern and multiplicity of agencies managing traffic are the reasons for the enormous traffic problems Bangalore is facing, he said. Strongly arguing in favour of public transport system to overcome the traffic woes of Bangalore, Mr. Saleem said bus system should be expanded and improved to attract people using personal vehicles.

Roads should have separate lanes to accommodate public transport vehicles on priority basis while in new areas, bus rapid transport system should be introduced, he said. Introduction of metro and mono rail system would also help reduce the load on the roads.

Stating that land use and transport planning should be integrated, Mr. Saleem said transport network should be planned before forming residential layouts. Existing narrow roads could be widened through Transferable Developmental Rights (TDR) to accommodate increased number of vehicles.

Introduction of the intelligent transport system, traffic regulatory measures, encouraging non-motorised transport, parking management, imposition of heavy parking fee, introduction of staggered working timing for offices and educational institutions and modernisation of traffic police, are some of the other measures which could improve the traffic condition if implemented properly, Mr. Saleem said.

BMTC ‘Bus Day’ on two routes today

Quote:
Bangalore, Feb 3, DHNS:The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) in co-ordination with the City traffic police and pollution control board is observing Thursday as ‘Bus Day’ with emphasis on two routes viz, Hosur and Kadugodi roads (Electronic City and ITPL corridors).

According to a release issued by the State-run corporation here, the day is being observed to spread awareness among the travelling public and citizens about the deteriorating traffic scenario and quality of air in the City and solving it through a shift from personalised vehicles to public transport.

The BMTC will operate extra buses on the above two corridors from important traffic hubs such as Kempegowda Bus Station, Shivajinagar, K R Market, Vijayanagar, Basaveshwaranagar, Vidyaranyapura, Koramangala, Madiwala etc during the morning and evening peak hours from Thursday.

The BMTC is also pressing into service additional feeder buses at two routes to provide easy access to Electronic City and ITPL (Whitefield) at a frequency of five minutes on the occasion of Bus Day. They are: Konnappana Agrahara; Electronic City Main Gate and Marathahalli; Hope Farm via Kundalahalli, Graphite India, Satyasai Hospital, ITPL.

Transport Minister R Ashok told reporters that he has directed all officers of the BMTC to travel by bus on Thursday. The minister himself will take a bus from Jayanagar IV Block to reach his office in Vidhana Soudha. Depending on the feedback to the pilot programme, the BMTC will extend the programme to other major corridors in Bangalore. Every month, one day will thus be observed as ‘Bus Day’, he added.
