About the article on BMTC buses breaking down in the middle of the roads. Few months back, I had discusses the same issue here.

The article has indeed covered the plight of both the crew and the passengers in an efficient manner. Yes, when we are traveling in a bus which breaks down midway, we would curse the crew, the bus or the corporation and get down. Once the conductor transfers the passengers to another bus their plight begins.

I recently witnessed one such incident in Attibele Bus Stop. An old bus running on route 600F Bsk-Attibele had broke down mid way but with great difficulty the driver managed to get the bus to Attibele Bus Stand. He was calling the depot manager for help but he was getting no help, I guess the depot manager was instructing the driver to get the bus back to the depot for repairs. The driver was trying to explain that the bus is not moving an inch and told him that few blades (not sure what it was) was broken. Again I guess he got no proper response. He started the bus and tried moving it but it would not budge. Later I heard him telling his conductor that the officials in the depot knew this bus had a problem but still they asked him to take it out.

I had to leave but I felt really sorry for the crew who were not getting any help from the depot.

Metro or BMTC, website makes it easy to commute

The Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transport and Urban Development (CISTUP) has developed a multi-modal public transport trip planner for the city. Any commuter, who wishes to use a combination of public transport systems like BMTC and Metro, can access the website and develop the itinerary by giving his origin and destination using an interactive interface. ‘Maargamitra’ is an attempt to promote the use of sustainable modes of public transport in the city. The trip planner gives the best path based on a unique concept of ‘generalised cost’, in which the best path is obtained based on a weighted combination of walking time, travel time, waiting time, transfer time and fare,” says Dr Ashish Verma from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science.

“At present, the trip planner includes Big 10, Vayu Vajra, Vajra, and Metro Reach-1 services. But as part of updating the system in future, the other bus routes as well as any new public transport modes that may come in future will be included. The structural design of the trip planner allows these additions easily,” he says. “Some users may prefer direct routes as compared to routes involving transfers, even when the direct route involves higher travel time. All these considerations relevant for Indian conditions can be imitated in trip planning by considering a generalised cost (GC) approach during shortest path analysis for finding the optimum route through a multi-modal public transport network,” he says.

BMTC’s Volvo buses enter profit era

Quote:
After incurring losses of Rs55 crore in four years, air-conditioned Volvo buses operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) have started making profits, according to deputy chief minister R Ashoka.

The corporation, which has 567 air-conditioned buses in its fleet, introduced the service in January 2006 with 25 buses, mainly running on routes connected to ITPL and Electronics City. In the first year, BMTC incurred a loss of Rs2.71 crore and losses went up to Rs32 crore in 2009-10 as a number of buses in the fleet was increased. However, in 2010-11, the corporation managed to post a profit of Rs4 crore and in 2011-12, the profit went up to Rs14 crore.

Reacting to a question on the floor of the legislative council, Ashoka said: “All the air-conditioned buses are making profits while ordinary buses are recording losses. Keeping in mind the requirement of the people, we are increasing the number ordinary buses; in the existing fleet, 95% of buses are ordinary buses.”

The minister said that the separate division established by the BMTC for operating Volvo buses yielded good results, adding that BMTC buses connecting IT corridors such as Electronics City and ITPB are eliciting encouraging response from commuters.

Airavat Bliss to ply in Bangalore-Mumbai route Reacting to demands by MLCs that KSRTC should operate recently inducted Volvo buses—with facilities such as chemical toilet, pantry, Wi-Fi connectivity and individual TV panels—in long-distance routes, the minister said KSRTC would induct more buses into the existing fleet and operate them in long-distance routes.

On July 18, KSRTC launched six Airavat Bliss buses in Bangalore-Chennai and Bangalore-Tirupati routes.

Broadway and Seppings roads opened to BMTC

Quote:
BANGALORE: The devout from East Bangalore can now hope to reach their home early after Ramzan prayers in various masjids of Shivajinagar by public transport. For, traffic police and BMTC have opened up Broadway Road and Seppings Road for buses. The move will also help those returning home from the shopping hubs of Russell Market and Commercial Street.

The BMTC too benefits as the move has reduced the distance between Shivjajinagar and various destinations like Frazer Town, Hennur, Banaswadi and KR Puram by 2km. BMTC commuters on these routes are all smiles as the fare has gone down — the Shivajinagar to Fraser Town commute will cost Rs 5, a savings of Rs 2. Earlier, BMTC buses would start from Shivajinagar, move towards Balekundri Circle, enter Cunningham Road and turn right into Millers Road before moving in front of Cantonment railway station to reach Bamboo Bazaar junction. From Tuesday, these buses go through Russel Market Road and take Broadway or Seppings Roads. "

The move will decongest the Balenkundri Circle and Cunningham Road," said MA Saleem, additional commissioner of police (traffic). He said bus traffic on Seppings Road will decongest Cockburn and Broadway roads. "We anticipate more visitors to Russell Market and Shivajinagar mosques during Ramzan. The new routes will help them take the public transport. We're also looking at St Mary's Feast. This will also help BMTC," said AS Shivaprakash, assistant traffic manager, Shivajinagar bus station. Over 70 buses run in 650 trips every day between Shivajinagar and Frazer Town, Cox Town, Richards Town, Pottery Town, Bangalore East, Hennur, Lingarajapuram, Banaswadi and KR Puram.

Big push for public transport system
R Ashoka | Jul 30, 2012, 06.05AM IST
Quote:
The transport ministry will take steps to provide safe, environmental friendly and sustainable public transport. We've always supported public transportation as a means for sustainable development. The idea is that increased use of public transportation will lessen the demand for private transportation , thereby lowering the number of vehicles on the road and lessening vehicle emissions.
Travelling by public transport should not be just convenient but it should be a pleasure . In order to increase the use of public transport in Karnataka, the ministry has initiated several proposals. But here are top five proposals.

1 ) To ensure buses maintain time, Vehicle Tracking System will be installed in 4,000 KSRTC buses. This system will provide information on real time vehicle location and expected time of arrival at any selected bus stand/pickup point. It will also enable people to get real time information through web application/mobile and IVRS. The system will also have a schedule planner which allocates vehicles and crew on weekly basis and parallel operation identification. There will be continuous communication between vehicle and control room. It will provide information on a regular basis enabling KSRTC to take corrective measures in case of any slip-ups .

2 ) For the convenience of common people at the bus stands, 300 passenger information display units will be installed at all bus stands. Real time information on bus movements will be communicated through PIS (passenger information system).

3 ) To make people's travel hassle-free , KSRTC will supply electronic ticketing machines with smart card interfacing to all depots. ETS (electronic ticketing system) will also empower KSRTC traffic/security & vigilance personnel to reconcile bus occupancy numbers with ticketed passengers and authenticate ETM-issued tickets or validated smart cards. ETS will support secure transfer of financial data from ETM through GSM network to a central server at preconfigured intervals . There will be facility for pre-paid cards.

4 ) KSRTC is implementing Intelligent Transport System (ITS) project in Mysore covering 500 buses, 105 bus stops, 6 bus terminals, 45 platforms at a cost of Rs 20.13 cr. It will cover automatic vehicle location information system and PIS providing information display in vehicles, bus stops, bus terminals , bus terminal platforms, one central control station (CCS), and generation of MIS reports.
This system will help in tracking and monitoring of the movement of buses on real time, information to commuters about bus routes and arrival timings of buses at the bus stops/terminals, next stop bus announcement system within bus along with display, facilitates timely management of incidents/accidents etc. The project is under final implementation stage and expected to be completely operational by August 2012.

5 ) In order to in increase frequency of bus service all over the state, 595 new buses will be inducted by March 2013. These include 52 Volvo multi axle buses which includes buses fitted with chemical toilet & pantry cabinet and sleeper coach buses, 42 Rajahamsa buses, 20 Karnataka Vaibhav, 75 front engine semi low floor buses for City operation and 400 NAL-designed Karnataka Saarige buses.

New BMTC bus from Bannerghata Road to airport
Quote:
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corportation today launched BIAS- 5 A , the much awaited Vayu Vajra bus service to the Bangalore International Airport for the benefit of residents on Bannerghatta Main Road.
Starting from Gottigere on Bannerghatta Main Road ,the BIAS- 5A service would cover the near 47 km journey in about two hours with the maximum fare at Rs 200. For now , six trips are scheduled for BIAL from Gottigere while the return service would number five. The first bus from Gottigere would leave for the airport at 5.40 am and the last one at 9.10 p.m. The return trip from BIAL would start at 5.30 a.m. with the last one at 8.20 p.m.
Flagging off the service at a function under the aegis of the Bannerghatta Neighbourhood Association, BANA, near Royal Meenakshi Mall this morning, M Krishnappa, MLA Bangalore South and Co-Chairman, BMTC, said that BIAS- 5A would cater to the needs of hundreds of professionals from the IT and related sector. These professionals who live on Bannerghatta road, he said, invariably had to depend on private or personal transport to reach the airport. To that extent, the BMTC service would go a long way in easing traffic congestion in the city with more and more people using public transport. Besides, it would prove viable for the users.
According to Yogesh Devaraj, President, BANA, the introduction of the airport services followed requests to Krishnappa and the BMTC. He hoped that once the limited BIAS- 5A gained popularity, BMTC would be able to increase the frequency of the services. Kedar Nayak, General Secretary, BANA, said that the umbrella organization sought to involve the several hundred resident welfare associations on Bannerghatta Main road with a view to improving the available infrastructure. The introduction of BIAS 5A service was one such attempt.⊕

How many times will they launch this Gottigere-BIAL service? They launch it ritually every year, and the buses disappear after a month. What is the use of such a service??

Metropolitan Transport Corporation gets tips from Bangalore counterparts to reap profit
CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) seems to be doing all it can to improve its service and this includes learning the way transport corporations in other cities are run. A team of MTC officials is back after observing the functioning of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and will soon submit a report to the transport secretary.

The team was impressed with the way BMTC, one of the few state-run transport corporations in the country to make profits, is run. "Unlike in Chennai, the functioning of BMTC is not interfered with by politicians," said a team member.

"One of the biggest challenges for MTC is studying route demands based on ticketing information as it has only 1,500 e-ticketing machines and collecting information from normal tickets is cumbersome. In Bangalore, routes are introduced based on locals' suggestions," said an official.

Residents of Chennai say their demands are barely heard. "From Mogappair East to West, a distance of barely 2km, there are no bus service and autorickshaws charge 40 per km," said V Ramani of Mogappair.

Another advantage for BMTC is the pricing. "Fares are linked to diesel price and employees' daily allowance. Whenever there is a hike in either of the two, a proposal is sent and a government order issued," said BMTC chief accounts officer B Chinnaswamy. MTC fares were increased last year after about 10 years.

BMTC runs more than 6,000 buses against MTC's 3,500 and ferries 48 lakh passengers daily while MTC carries around 50 lakh. Yet, BMTC has never made losses in the last 10 years. "So far this year, we have made a profit of 21 crore; last year we made 50 crore. In the last 10 years, we have an accumulated profit of around 633 crore," said Chinnasamy.

BMTC bus route changed- Commuters protest Netkallappa Circle.

English summary
BMTC bus route changed- Commuters protest Netkallappa Circle. For ages, BMTC going towards Jayanagar 3rd block from Gandhi Bazaar used to ply via K R Road, Netkallappa Circle, Nagasandra Circle and proceed further. However, these buses after coming out of Dewan Madhava Road, go via KR Road, join South End Road near Shanthi Talkies and move towards South End Circle and up. Localites protested against this today.
