New BMTC buses to roll out soon

With Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) planning to introduce nearly 925 buses in the city, it will be interesting to see how many existing buses the authorities will discard and which ones they will opt for, considering the fact that there are a variety of buses plying in the city now. Out of the 925 buses, 400 will be built in the BMTC workshop and the remaining will be manufactured in the workshop of the agencies.

The said target will be achieved only by next March or April. “Body building and other procedures involved take quite a long time, hence, we will take some time in achieving the said target,” says Managing Director of BMTC KR Srinivasa. However, majority of buses will be ordinary BMTC buses, and not more than 175 buses will be high-end.

Introduced in year 2008, Marco Polo buses was touted as one of the best services introduced by BMTC and it came with the same facilities as Volvo but at a lower cost. The buses built by Tatas in collaboration with Marcopolo of Brazil has luxury features of international standards and is priced between Rs 35 and 40 lakh, while a Volvo bus costs nearly Rs 75 lakh.

“Maintenance of Volvos is done by the company itself under the contract, which is an expensive affair,’’ a BMTC official said. However, Srinivasa adds, “We did not get the expected positive response from the commuters and hence, we are not bring ing in more Marco Polo buses.”

“Marcopolo cost only 20-30 per cent less than the Volvo but lacks refinements which are ‘basic’ at that cost. Not only the engines are way too noisy but also the bus struggles to start and passengers in the bus can hear the loud engine noise. The AC does not work efficiently. There are reports of passengers sweating inside the bus. The automatic doors have issues and transmission problems too,” says Dheeraj, a regular commuter.

As far as metro feeders are concerned, we might not see much of it at least now. “Metro feeders have been introduced as a pilot project and in a limited stretch, hence, they have not been fully exploited. We see that metro feeders are used only during holidays. As of now, we are not planning to buy more of metro feeders.”

In the year 2010, BMTC decided to run Mercdes Benz buses in Bangalore city for three months on a trial basis.

However, if you go by what Srinivasa says, we might not witness more of Mercdes Benz buses plying in the city.

He says, “It is difficult to know the performance of a bus with just two buses. We need at least 20-25 buses to run for 4-5 months in order to access their performance. However, if at all, we are ready to take the risk and spend so much of money, then the technical department will have to into the longevity of its features.”

But, BMTC Corona buses that were introduced last year have been receiving overwhelming response and we might see more of these buses running on the city roads.

‘The Corona, which costs Rs 25 lakh less than a Volvo and provides the same services as a Volvo comes at a cheaper price.”

The only bus that has been constant in its performance and response is Volvo, hence, in the coming days, we might see more of Volvos and Coronas rolling out in the city.

Transport corporation says this has reduced number of private vehicles on roads

At a time when Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has been unable to add more buses to its fleet and cater to the growing demand for bus services, its move to offer over 800 buses to companies and schools on chartered service has come in for criticism both from within and outside.

The transport corporation, which has 6,200 buses in its fleet, has offered about 550 buses to companies/ factories which drop off employees in the mornings and pick them up in the evenings from their workplace. Besides these buses, the transport corporation has offered 310 buses exclusively to companies (dedicated services). Also, 280 buses ferry schoolchildren morning and evening.

S. Dharanendra, a public sector undertaking employee and regular user of BMTC, said that travelling during morning and evening peak hours is becoming increasingly difficult. Even though the number of passengers has been on the rise, the transport corporation has not been able to cater to the growing demand, Mr. Dharanendra regretted. He said, “However, I see a number of Pushpak buses ferrying employees of IT companies and public sector undertakings every morning and evening. I am unable to understand how BMTC is able to provide these buses to companies when the common man is forced to travel standing in buses during peak hours.”

His views are endorsed by the operations department of the corporation too. A senior officer said, “Giving buses on hire could have been avoided now as we are short of buses for routine operations. Our mandate is to operate services for the common man and not to give buses on hire.”

However, a senior official in the commercial department, which offers buses on hire, defended the move and said that many of the services are operated during off-peak hours. He said that the transport corporation gets assured revenue from these services and the operations are profitable as two-way fares are collected for each trip.

Moreover, operating special services to companies/ factories has brought down the number of four-wheelers and two-wheelers on the choked city roads considerably, the officer contended. These 800 buses transport about 4,000 people daily, bringing down the number of private vehicles on the roads, he said.

Considering the difficulties of general travellers (during off company duty) while boarding/ alighting single-door Pushpak services, the transport corporation has now introduced double-door Pushpak coaches, the officer said.

Rubbishing the official claim of operating company services during off-peak hours, V.K. Raghavendra, another regular commuter, said that these buses operate for companies during morning and evening peak hours.

The worse, Mr. Raghavendra said, would be when these single-door buses are pressed into general duty during lunch hours when regular bus services become scarce and commuters are in dire need of services. Boarding and alighting these buses and the driver performing the dual role of driver-cum-conductor on many occasions, test the patience of commuters, he said.

Hindu woke up suddenly or what?? this is been happening for years

Its true that these buses are hired by companies -
advantages ->
1.More people tend to take the bus which has a pickup/drop almost near their doorstep compared to BMTC
2.Usually IT Crowd is unaware of bus routes and they get used to or start liking bus service by using it, inturn they start using it during leisure commutes.
3.Reduces a lot of personal vehicles on the road(arguably from IT Crowd which tends to buy 4 wheelers and drive alone to office ;-) )

Disadvantages:
general public do not get enough buses on their routes

Solutions:
Get more buses

BMTC gets more value to the service because it runs the bus till the company location as normal BMTC bus and also when it drives back to its public location.

Hindu was always a communist newspaper, it is left as seen in wiki article. BMTC should lease max 10% of its buses for such purpose.. and better dont lease out volvos at all

But wipro/hcl etc are hiring private buses instead of bmtc which is good move Though they drive dangerously not as much as they would if they were allowed to pick nomral public, as they currently they dont gain anything for driving fast.

They do pick people roadside :-) but BMTC is always preferred and the best thing is these companies are plying via NICE/BETL make it more attractive to employees to take buses.
