Nice to see pictures of the city where I was born and where I grew up.

When you see those pictures it is hard to imagine that there is only 70,000 people living there. It really looks and feels much bigger!

Only 70.000 inhabitants? Looks like 400.000+ or so. Amazing towers, looks a bit poor, but that's what I like.

I was last in Oostende back in the summer of 1991. It doesn't look like it's changed much since then.

I had a great time there...I rode the tram and ate in one of the many restaurants on the seafront. The weather was really hot that day too....great beach weather.

I agree with the other poster too -- the city felt MUCH bigger than it actually is.

The reason that Ostend only has 70,000 inhabitants is due to the fact that it has no suburbs. Ostend is basically just like a city centre...

However, it has quite a big influence in the region due to the port, airport, schools, tourism, shopping, hospitals,... So basically itīs just a big, small city.

May I ask if Oostende was bombed in WWII? Because much of the city looks post war and I know of some 19th century pictures of the city, where the city just looked stunningly beautiful.

Yes, Ostend was bombed during the war and there is no historical city centre.

In Belgium Ostend is also considered as quite an ugly city because the lack of a historical centre. In my opinion itīs also not so nice. Just take away the sea and you have a very grey city. I prefer cities like Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels.

Well, technically there is one. There's just not much left of it because of WO2 and mass tourism sadly enough.

Oostende was very beautiful. Damn you, nazi's!

It's sad to see the wars devastated so many beautiful historical sites in Flanders...

Tourism and building compagnies caused much more damage after WOII than the nazi's in WOII.
