Hey I love Miami. Downtown used to be incredible back in the day. I just think all the fabulous retail centers need to be connected somehow. Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Downtown, the Design District all could be linked by walkable and sustainable communities. The watery location is incredible but unfortunately there are way too many private parts like Star Island and such. Miami is a very interesting city and it has a lot going for it. Miami has grown so fast in ten years and most of it is for the better.

Florida has a strip mall mentality in its cities that needs to go. The rich in NYC mingle with the common folk, in Miami it is not as evident since people live on private islands and take their private yachts and shield themselves from society. You don't see stars walking around so casually like you do in Manhattan.

I am not insulting the city because it is hardly a lost cause. I just want to see more smart growth that everyone can enjoy.

Don't get me started on the rest of Florida cities. St. Petersburg is the only other city that I see making efforts on walkability. The rest of Florida is a bit too conservative for my tastes.

I'm originally from Jacksonville and headed for California when I was 18. I only came to South Florida because my mother wasn't doing well and moved in with my aunt. I settled on South Beach in 1984 because to me it was the part of South Florida that reminded me the most of California. It wasn't even called South Beach then. Knowing what property values were near the water in California at the time, I knew there was something wrong with that picture, but didn't have the money to take advantage.

I did not realize that stating an opinion and/or debating a point means that I think that I am elite.
I challenge you to find the "eliteness" in my comments! LOL

This is the commentary I included with this pic when I first ran it on my QuantumPx thread: "Having been a skyscraper aficionado all of my adult life, I am interested in vantage points of the Miami skyline wherever I find them, regardless of where I find them or what is in the foreground. This first pic haunts me because as if appearing like a ghost, I did not even notice the woman walking along the railroad tracks until I downloaded all the pictures of day from my camera and displayed them large-size on my flat screen wearing my reading glasses. It brought home to me that fact that Miami remains a city of striking contrasts as if a microcosm of the world at large".

How many skyscrapers can you make out in this pic from NE 54th Street and NE 2nd Avenue? The plaza on the left is where I get my hair cut. There is something only-in-Miami about me getting my hair cut at a Cuban barbershop in Little Haiti.

Views from Marina Blue

I toured this unit on the 56th floor last summer and decided this is where I want to live when I'm rich and famous.

These are beautiful shots of my neighborhood...
In my opinion, of course.
For those of you who don't know it, you can see the Omni Station, where I walk to take the Metro Mover everyday for work and to my classes. I can also take it easily to Brickell as well as to Govt. Center for metrorail (Which I use a lot). I also take the bus to South Beach. Sometimes I bike to the beach by using the Venetian Causeway. Sometimes I bike to work. The weather has been fantastic since mid-October, perfect for biking. There is a beautiful city park on the bay across the street from where I live (you can barely see it in the second photo). I walk as much as I can here - which is alot. I walk to the grocery store, as well as to Bayside. I hardly ever use the car.

Very interesting perspective of my apartment building (North Tower).
I love this pic.
Great contrast.
Maybe one day, I'll be living in a unit in the building in the forefront!

Thanks, I just started doing this this summer, and I turned out to be pretty good at it since I've been studying skylines since I was a teenager.

I said it before and I say it now, Miami is the only city south of Philly. No competition whatsoever.

If so, I would like to see that pic. These are all mine and I have the copyrights to them and I haven't sold them to anybody. This photo was taken 10/18/08 though, so I doubt anyone has had time to expolit it in that way.

Great photos!

I love the 2nd Ave shots. Wouldn't mind seeing more of those unusual angles.

Thanks! I'm glad you like those. I wasn't sure how other people would take them, so until now I had only posted them on my QuantumPX thread, which is sort of my photo lab. I love incorporating street life with the skyilne beyond. I hadn't planned to post them here until Palermodude challenged me to show some pictures of the real Miami, and that opened the door for me to post a variety of different types of pics. The first page and half of the second page I created to work on my music video.

The woman walking along the railroad tracks is one of my personal favorites because notice how she is positioned between two luxury high-rise condos under construction with cranes outstretched above on both sides of her as if she is about to be crucified. And I swear I didn't even see that woman until I dowloaded the pics from day. Like one of the other Miami forum members said, I incorporate the glamour and the grit. Here is more of the glamour, the MacArthur Causeway entering South Beach at 5th Street.
