Gov gives UN an OK to expand
New York Post
By ANDY SOLTIS
Last Updated: 12:47 AM, July 16, 2011

The UN headquarters is getting bigger.

Gov. Cuomo yesterday signed legislation that will allow the United Nations to expand south of its current quarters and build offices on Robert Moses Playground, between 41st and 42nd streets east of First Avenue.

The expansion bill, which the Legislature passed last month, requires the city to find new park space in Manhattan to make up for the more than one acre lost to the United Nations.

Sponsors say the new building will be no taller than the 39-story UN Secretariat building, the best-known feature of the complex.

The expansion is needed to house and improve security for staff, supporters said. The workers are now spread among buildings owned by the city and private landlords.

Construction on the original 17-acre UN complex in Turtle Bay began in 1947. The headquarters has remained largely the same since the Dag Hammarskjold Library was added in 1961.

"For over 60 years, the United Nations has been an important part of New York, bringing jobs, tourism and economic development to the city," Cuomo said yesterday.

"This law allows the UN to expand its facilities, bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment, and helping it better serve its vital mission."

The United Nations has to approve the deal, which reportedly would mean paying upward of $75 million for the park land.

Proceeds from the land sale are expected to be used to help finance renovation of the promenade along the East River from 38th to 60th streets.

A formal agreement has to be signed by Oct. 10 for the land transfer to the UN Development Corp. to be authorized.

Secretariat Building Renovation Work Continues - The replacement of the glass curtain wall of the UN Secretariat Building is almost complete. As part of the UN Capital Master Plan (CMP), the entire curtain wall, installed between 1949 and 1950 as the first of its kind in New York, is being replaced with a new structure that looks like the original, but provides vastly improved energy efficiency and better security.

Aren't they gonna repair those chipped columns behind the glass curtqin wall or is such a job difficult so they may leave the columns that way? That's not supposed to happen in a LEED-certified building.

They will be covered with a case, so those 'chipped collums' will not be visible when the refurbishment is complete.

The columns are made of reinforced concrete. The structural frame of the Secretariat Building is of reinforced concrete.

Architects revive plans for new U.N. tower
October 20, 2011 11:00AM

Architect Fumihiko Maki's original plans for the U.N. tower

State authorities reached a deal with the city and the United Nations to revive stalled plans for a $340 million new U.N. tower earlier this month, the New York Observer reported. That means that Japenese architect Fumihiko Maki, who was selected to design the building when the idea first emerged in 2004, will be dusting off his blueprints alongside local partners architecture firm FXFowle and getting back to work. "We have a saying around the office," Dan Kaplan, a principal at FXFowle, told the Observer. "It takes a long time for things to happen suddenly."

Much of the design work has already been completed for a 35-story tower on the site at the southeast corner of First Avenue and 42nd Street, but it will require some changes, Kaplan said. "We're not back to square-one, maybe square 1.5. It's a tight site and a tight building envelope, so I don't think the designs will change that much, but we are going back over everything," he said.

Jeffrey Feldman, president and CEO of the U.N. Development Corporation, told the Observer that he hopes to have the final designs by early 2012. The project is slated to break ground in 2013.

What does this mean then? The tower which has just been refurbished will be replaced by this?

I like the new glass - building seems much more modern with it. What is going on inside? how extensive are the renovations?
