This has a unique character too, though. I don't think we lost anything.

No doubt replicating the original hue of the glass was high on the list of options but for whatever reason, the architects along with UN administrators went with the darker color. But they had no choice but to replace the single layer glazing with double-pane glass as well as the outdated mechanicals that sent utility bills through the roof, even with the bulk pricing they get from Con Ed.

Although I do believe that the UN is a rather inefficient organization, the renovations done to their HQ make the building look fresh again.

It is a very beautiful city. It is Europe in the whole world. It is located on the Mediterranean Sea and it has a lot of amazing beaches and a balmy sunny weather. The city reflects a quintessential old world charm along with the more modern approach to urban development. There is an array of preserved historic areas and also the contemporary skyscrapers which dot the city skyline.

Any update about this project? Is the cladding finished by now?

Nice shot of the newly revamped Secretariat Building. Work continues in the lower level areas. (Apr. 8)

I like the rhythm of the horizontal lines. Probably not recognised by many people, but this is really well designed and will probably stand the test of time

Facade....they just tried to make it resemble the original as close as they could. Most of the renovations were for energy efficiency.

Thanks. I searched for a before/after comparison but haven't found any.

It looks like the new glass panels are much smaller, resulting in a more tightly spaced grid. Also, they appear less green, less saturated with color as compared to the old glass. Is that correct?

Probably. I'm not sure on the specifics, but I believe they were trying to maximize the energy efficiency of the building.

I don't think they're smaller, but it looks, maybe because of their darker color.
Look at third page, you can see new cladding (top of the building) and old.

When I visited NYC in November 2011, I didn't knew cladding was different and I didn't see it so, for me, no big difference (for the look I mean) but I think it's what they wanted to do.

(Sorry if you have difficulties to understand me, I'm french so sometimes my sentences could be strange)

In my opinion, they should get some sort of new structure for the UN.

Did you guys know that each tier of the building is in the Golden Ratio rectangle?

It's a fine, groundbreaking structure that should never be demolished. It is an icon for the city.

Has the UN moved back to the building by now?
