The Green Line actually goes through some density, like all of our lines do. The Foothill Extension really doesn't have any density or destinations.
You are right about density. I am not really a supporter of Foothill Extension (I rather see Eastside Extension continue to Whittier instead). But as for destinations, Foothill Extension is part of the gold line which goes into union station. That's not a good enough destination? and at the other end? people's homes. Just like the Eastside Extension, it does not really have an eastern destination, but rather it is an ideal way for people to go to and from work.

After all, doesn't regional rail goes between destinations, and metro rail bring people to and from work?

Sure, but that's a long way to Union Station, and we have many other lines that would serve a better purpose that are waiting to be built.

San Gabriel Valley politicians are not that bright. It is the one thing i dislike about being from there. They just want stuff that benefits them.

I would not be surprise if SGV tried to detach itself from L.A. county.

Oh well, if High Speed Rail happens, there will be a high-speed link between L.A. and SGV (a stop between L.A. and Ontario Airport, which happens to be closer to my house than this foothill extension would be )

gold line extension through SGV has ontario, a major suburb with city-like potential with it's own regional airport with expansion potential. the density we desire will follow.

besides, we should take any rail otherwise it'll be too late and the process will take too long... purple line anybody?

the green line has destinations. just cuz it doesn't go where you want it doesn't make it useless. there are subway lines in NYC that have 2 destinations that end in "blah", but the riders are still there.

i like to think of the green line as a line that brings riders to imperial/wilmington on the blue line. it gets people out of their homes and into their choice of 2 city centers.

and the green line will have to eventually go into LAX west and that metrolink station to the east anyway.

the green line better go to the metrolink station *prays*. It is like a broken system without that... and i think one of the high speed rail stops is Norwalk as well, so thats even more persuasion to extend it. Although I am not forgetting about going to LAX, that also is vital.

by the way, your argument for the foothill extension sounds more like regional rail would be better =/ I tried auguring for that thing in the past, but to be honest I ran out of reasons for needing it

Foothill would be better as regional rail I do agree. But I'm sure some people said the same thing about the 22 mile Blue Line when being built. Remember LA's DNA is one of a collective not just one part being the City Of LA. The old trolley lines went far far farrrrrrthest than most trolley lines in the world! So it doesn't surprise me that LA would continue more or less in this same fashion. Yes, shorter efficient rail like Red, Purple, and Expo that stays pretty much in dense urban areas but also outlier lines that mimic the old trolley system going off into the vast beyond.

If there was to be a rail line going East that went through the areas with more density, that would be something to follow the 10 freeway east of downtown... the problem is, there is so little room there, that they even are having a difficult time to even add carpool lanes to the 10 there, because they have built right up to the freeway in places like Baldwin Park. (funny story here, the first In-N-Out actually used to be right in the middle of where the 10 freeway lies today, until they moved it down the street a bit :P)

Eastside extension does have more density then the Foothill extension (that is why it is currently under construction obviously), however, where it is ending right now is about where the density ends. Same with the other end of the gold line, Pasadena is about the end of noticeable density. I am not sure how the numbers, but it seems extending the gold line at either side will have it go through lesser density than it already does.

I wonder what will happen when they turn the san gabriel valley freeways' carpool names into toll lanes (that is the plan, right?), will the El Monte Busway finally be without the traffic?

there aren't many reasons, you're right, but any reason for rail (to me) is good enough reason to change our car culture ever so slowly

Just extend the Purple Line into East LA underneath Whittier. I couldn't believe how much pedestrian activity this area had when I visited. The E. Gold will place the Gold Line squarely behind the Blue Line in ridership when opened.

purple line, east LA? you mean the eastside extension of gold line? What does Purple Line has to do with that? They already are looking into extending that into Whittier. 4 possible routes has been chosen.

From SGV Tribune:

"The MTA has identified four possible routes for the train. Three would go to Whittier, and a fourth would go north of the Puente Hills.

Two routes go to Whittier via Beverly or Whittier boulevards. Those lines would use the Greenway Trail to get to Uptown and would fit two rail lines and the existing pedestrian/bicycle trail.

Another route would go further south along Washington Boulevard.

The fourth route would run along the 60 Freeway through Montebello and the Whittier Narrows area to South El Monte. "

Can we have all the transit discussions in the Transit Issues thread, instead?

I love those Nippon Sharyo cars painted in silver. Since the Expo Line will be getting those instead of the Breda cars, I hope the rest of the Blue Line rolling stock is painted in that color scheme.
