Vancouverite in Shanghai

Hey all, just thought I'd share some pics from my first trip to Shanghai. It was definitely an interesting city and I had a great time there. I met some interesting people, ate lots of tasty food, and got to explore some of the many unique neighbourhoods Shanghai has from the narrow alleys and cafes of Taikang Lu to the wide open spaces and soaring towers of Pudong. Some of the night shots might be a bit blurry since I don't have a tripod but all things considered I think they turned out all right. Enjoy.

Coming in for a landing:

Nice pix. You have very steady hands. I would never be able to take non-blurry night pictures. How long does it take to fly to Shanghai from Vancouver? 10 hours?

In 10 more years this city will become even more unrecognizable. The rate of change is astounding.

That starbucks near the "zig-zag" bridge (don't know its name) looks totally out of place.

Your pictures are wonderfull, they capture the urban feeling perfectly. How was it like for you to be there?

Flying direct it took about 12 hours on the way there and about 11 hours on the way back.

Thanks! I'm not sure where to start. I really had a good time there but it is definitely a different (and obviously way huger) city than Vancouver. The streets were of course really busy and the traffic was hectic. There was plenty of street-front retail, much of which was selling interesting authentic wares/food - particularly along the smaller side streets. In some places the sidewalks were really narrow and practically non-existent so you had to walk on the road which was a bit freaky at times since the traffic keeps whizzing by. At night there were a lot of interesting lighting effects and neon on buildings. The food was tasty. The people on the streets were a mix of really aggressive people trying to sell you stuff and really friendly people seeming to just want to talk to a foreigner/practice their english. The city was a great mix of the old and the ultra-modern. There was lots and lots of construction everywhere. And there was so much advertising everywhere that it feels like one of the most capitalist cities I've ever been to.
