Four trips for now

For the time being, four services will be available from the KSRTC bus stand and back.

Departure from KSRTC, Bijai:

7-05 am, 10-05 am, 1-05 pm and 4-20 pm

Departure from airport:

8-00 am, 11-00 am, 2-15 pm and 5-15 pm.

The airconditioned 43-seater buses will hit the Bijai-KPT-Bondel-Kavoor-Marakada route. The KSRTC intends to extend the service up to central railway station and State Bank terminus also and is awaiting a green signal.

The one-way fare is Rs 100.

Rs 15 Cr sanctioned for extension of runway

Mangalore: The Karnataka Government has sanctioned Rs 15 crore for extension of runway here, District Incharge Minister Krishna J Palemar said today.

Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of a cultural programme here, he said 154 acres of land had been acquired for the purpose.

He said an additional Rs 100 crore would be spent on overall upgradation work of the airport with the Centre and State sharing the expenditure in the ratio of 75:25.

He said an amount of Rs seven crore ha already been sanctioned for the overall development of roads linking to airport. Tender process was on and the works would be completed within six months to one year, he added.

Dubai: Destination Mangalore for IndiGo Airlines Soon

Dubai, Jul 26 : While a few private airlines' promises to connect Mangalore internationally
remain promises only, IndiGo, one of India's most reliable budget airlines which announced the launch of its international flights from September 1, has now assured to consider Dubai-Mangalore flights in the coming days.

Speaking to Rajesh Sequeira, founder and co-ordinator of Karnataka NRI Forum of UAE, Aditya Ghosh, president of IndiGO assured that Dubai-Mangalore IndGo flights are on the anvil, but it is too early to give the exact picture now. IndiGo considers Mangalore as one of the key destinations, he said.

Earlier this year, Jet Airways had reportedly planned Sharjah-Mangalore direct flight, and was supposed to begin operations from May 2011. The exact reason for the delay in operations is not known.

'MESS' in Mangalore airport

Mangalore Airport may look spick and span with the ‘Mechanised Environmental Support Services (MESS)’, sophisticated equipment employed for cleaning the airport.



“Airport is the first point of contact, to any international passenger or anybody visiting Mangalore via air route. Hence the airport is the mirror of the City. The new technology to clean the airport has been adopted for this purpose,” said Mangalore Airport Director M R Vasudeva Rao addressing the media persons after the inauguration of the MESS.

The tender to clean the airport has been given to Durga Facility Management Services Private Limited, Mangalore. The Rs 1.23 crore contract will be for a period of three years and Rs 33 lakh will be spent for cleaning the old terminal.

The work will be undertaken according to the ISO: 9001:2008 standards.Durga Facility management Services Private Limited Managing Director B S Shetty said that with the mechanised cleaning as much as 70 per cent of the work will be done by equipment and people will be appointed only to operate the machines

As many as 16 different types of chemicals will be used to clean different areas in the airport such as floor, glass and metal parts.

Hygiene will be the primary concern and dusters will be colour coded so that they can be used only for specific work.

A sum of Rs 30 lakhs has been spent on the cleaning machinery. The tender can be extended by another two years if the work was satisfactory, claimed Shetty and addded that the staff will be given a ‘Standard Operation Procedure’ to work and also a checklist will be prepared to ensure the work is done properly.

There will be three types of cleaning procedures such as regular, weekly and monthly, he said.The ‘Walk behind scrubber’ can clean 59,000 sq feet per hour, which is equal to six humans working and with the Hydrolic Jack a person can easily clean the roof, said Shetty introducing the machinery and added that safety of the workers is also taken care of.

Customer satisfaction

Vasudeva Rao informed that according to the Customer Satisfaction Survey, Mangalore airport has secured 79 in round I, 75 in round II, 83 in round III and 85 in Round IV. Lucknow airport has scored the highest in the survey with 90 points in round IV, he said and added that Mangalore has managed to be in the first two places in South India.

Mangalore airport to belinked to more cities soon

MANGALORE, AUG. 1:
Mangalore airport will be connected with more domestic destinations such as Hyderabad, Chennai in the days to come, according to Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Mangalore.

Speaking on the sidelines of a function to launch the mechanised housekeeping service at the new integrated terminal building of Mangalore airport on Monday, he said that SpiceJet has shown interest in operating daily flights to Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai during the winter schedule.

The winter schedule will begin from October 25.

The airline has shown interest to operate two flights to Bangalore and one each to Hyderabad and Chennai, he said.

Added to this, Jet Airways will increase its service to Bangalore from the existing two flights a day to three flights.

Kingfisher Airlines has shown interest in operating a flight to Mumbai, he said.

With these services, the number of flight movements from Mangalore to other domestic destinations will reach 38 a day. Mangalore airport operates 50 flight movements a week to international destinations in West Asian countries.

MANGALORE: Jet Airways will introduce an additional flight to Bangalore from Mangalore in winter schedule starting from October 25, taking its total domestic operations from this city to five.

Jet Airways, at present, operates two flights each to Bangalore and Mumbai every day. The proposed flight to Bangalore will depart Mangalore at 11.20 am and will complement the other two flights to the state capital that depart at 8.45 am and 8.15 pm respectively.

Interacting with reporters after the launch of mechanised environment support services contracted by AAI to city based m/s Durga Facility Management Services Pvt Ltd on Monday, airport director M R Vasudeva said, "Kingfisher will shortly reintroduce its flight to Mumbai using an Airbus A321 aircraft. This would take the total domestic operations each day to 38 movements (19 flights) and 50 weekly movements of international flights."

Clarifying that there is no new proposal for additional international flights from Mangalore, Vasudeva said, "The airport is also gearing up to scale higher on customer satisfaction index (CSI) for airports in India. The mechanized cleaning contracted to Durga Facility at the cost of Rs 1.23 crore for three years will ensure that the airport meets one aspect of the CSI - that the airports ensure cleanliness and hygiene.

Observing that the airport is first contact point for an international and a domestic passenger, Vasudeva said, the image presented by the airport gives one an indication about how clean the state is.

The contractor has pressed in to service advanced mechanised cleaning equipment worth Rs 30 lakh such as hydraulic jack, auto scrubber that would ensure that the floor, metal frames and glass and all areas spread over 18,200 sqft are spotless.

B S Shetty of Durga Facility said his firm is also entrusted the responsibility of housekeeping of KSRTC main bus station as well as couple of railway stations in Mumbai. "The airport cleaning is moving from environmental support system to mechanised environmental support services from August 2," he pointed. Interestingly, the airport is getting into mechanised cleaning on August 2, exactly a year after it was officially commissioned.

'Intl airport-tag will reduce air fare'

Declaring Mangalore Airport as International Airport would invite more number of aeroplane companies to introduce flights to and from Mangalore which would lead to the competition and result in decrease in the aeroplane ticket prices.

The tag of International airport brings with it several advantages, said Mangalore Airport Director M R Vasudeva.

He was delivering a talk on the growth and development of Mangalore Airport in a programme organised by St Aloysius College Alumni Association (SACCA) at Aloysius College on Friday. The number of passengers flying from Mangalore Airport was 2.7 lakh in the year 2005, while it has rises to 8.5 lakh now after declaring Mangalore Airport as Customs Airport.

The Airport is growing at speed of 10 to 15 percent, but the growth is not substantial when compared to the average growth of airports in the nation which is between 20-25 percent, said Vasudeva.

He also claimed that identifying Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) area near the Airport would help in the development of the Airport to a large extent.

“MSEZ and Airport would facilitate for the progress of each other. With the present new terminal, the Airport will not have any difficulty for the next ten years. The proposal for the expansion of the run way is in hand and once the run way is expanded Mangalore Airport will have all credentials to attain the International status,” he stated.

Director of the Mangalore Airport M.R. Vasudeva said here on Friday that the airport officials were hopeful that the Customs Department would permit the airport to handle cargo.

Speaking on “Mangalore Airport, past, present and future” at St. Aloysius College, he said that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was ready for taking the custodianship of cargo.

The airport had planned to start cargo operations from its old terminal building at Bajpe.

AUTOMATIC TOWER

He said that the AAI had planned to set up an automatic aerodrome tower system at the airport to reduce stress on air traffic controllers managing air traffic services.

The airport provided air traffic services to flights operating in 256 nautical miles radius of the airport.

The director said that this year's Haj flight services at the airport would begin in October.

He said that the State Government was expected to take up work on developing the exit road of the airport at an estimated cost of Rs. 7 crore after this monsoon.

DEMAND

Mr. Vasudeva said that unless there was demand from passengers to operate flights to other destinations other than West Asia, airlines would not come forward to operate flights to those destinations.

The director said that the airport was safe for operating flights.

There were many hill top airports in the world.

You have good connectivity to Bangalore from Mysore - Volvos every half an hour,rajhamsa,megadooths,Lot of trains including a shatabdi daily, moreover people travel by cabs right from Mysore to BIAL.SH 17 is by far the best Highway to relax and enjoy with lots of nice hotels-adigas,kamath,shivalli,MTR,,more than half a dozen of Cafe coffee days,Mac donalds,KFC etc.....Though Mysore-Madikeri SH 88 also boasts of nice restaurants and 4-5 Cafe coffee day outlets, but this MYS-BLR route is good.

Mysore-Bangalore stretch is looking like one complete urban corridor with towns almost merging along the highway.


A bus a minute, and sometimes just a passenger a bus

The standard sales pitch of every driver-conductor of every KSRTC bus that plies between Mysore and Bangalore is the same. That he is about to leave and that there are only a few seats left.

The passenger, wanting to get on one of those “last” seats left, gets on to the bus only to see that she or he is one of the very few passengers aboard.

On some days, many buses ply either way with just a handful of passengers. “Sometimes it is just a couple of passengers,” says a driver-conductor, that two-in-one combination of KSRTC staff introduced by the corporation to save money, and make operations more efficient. Another recalls that he had operated a trip with just one passenger some time ago.

With a total 1,372 trips between Bangalore and Mysore, which makes it a bus connecting the two cities every other minute, the KSRTC claims it is running the operations with a fair profit. The fares range between Rs 91 to Rs 250 for different buses. The number of trips increases considerably during special occasions and holidays.

The huge number of trips by KSRTC between the two cities is in addition to 21 trains that run on the busiest route in the State, ferrying a huge number of passengers between the two prime cities. So how does KSRTC make a profit, then? According to Senior Divisional Controller of Mysore Rural Division, G Prakash, the coaches are packed on weekends and Monday mornings.

“Even if we run a bus with less passengers on weekdays, it evens out on weekends, for all the trips run full. And during important festivals and Dasara, we have to put more buses on the road,” he says.

According to KSRTC statistics, on an average, about 28 people travel between the two cities on each trip. Private buses do not operate on the route, as they cannot match either the fare or the comfort offered by the KSRTC.

Few buses leave the bus stand at either point between 1 am and 5 am. The number increases every hour after that, with heavy inflow of passengers up to 8 am. After which, the frequency of buses comes down and so does the number of passengers. Buses that start from Bangalore bus stand in the evening carry the most passengers to Mysore till 8 pm.

Peak days

There is a pattern to passengers travelling by the KSRTC buses, too. Trade and high job rate are among the reasons that make Bangalore and Mysore the most frequently connected cities in the State.

Sunday preferred

Most passengers prefer travelling between Bangalore and Mysore on Sundays, Mondays, Saturdays. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are lean days. The number of passengers comes down drastically on ‘Amavasya’ day, which according to local customs is not auspicious for travelling.
