New air traffic control tower for Mangalore airport
TNN | Apr 23, 2012,

Quote:
MANGALORE: With a view to enhancing the safety and security of Mangalore airport and also bringing different air control units under one roof, the Airports Authority of India has gone in for a new air traffic control (ATC) tower and technical block. Airport director MR Vasudeva laid the foundation stone for the new ATC tower and technical block at Kenjar near here on Sunday.

Vasudeva said the project, costing Rs 18.3 crore, will be completed within 13 months. It will house air traffic control, control tower, radar unit and communication unit at one place. The three floors plus basement structure will come up behind the fire station and will allow a bird's eye view of the entire airport as in other airports like Chennai and Kolkata. Of the Rs 18.8 crore, the civil component is Rs 7 crore and the rest is for equipment, Vasudeva added. The airport presently handles 24 flights per day.

Passenger air traffic figures see upward trend at Bajpe airport

Stanley Pinto , TNN | May 15, 2012, 11.01PM IST
Quote:

MANGALORE: The surge in domestic passenger traffic at Bajpe airport in the past four months can be an indicator of people willing to pay more for convenience. The domestic passenger has increased by 24% at the airport. In the four months between January and April last year as many as 2,444 domestic fights took off from the airport. The number touched 2,784 in the first four months of this year.

Close to 46,300 more passengers opted to travel by air this year compared to last year in the period. Bajpe airport director Vasudeva says that the surge could be an indication of the spending power of people in the region. "The traffic has not seen a dip despite Kingfisher pulling out its services to Mumbai. ," he said. Lata Kini, the president of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, admits that the increase in traffic is directly proportional to the rising economy of the region.

"Now that we have direct fight connections to Hyderabad and Chennai with occupancy rates between 60% and 70%, I wonder how these people travelled earlier,'' Lata says. "The direct flights are a boon for people. If we are travelling by train to either of the two destinations, it will take 15 to 24 hour to reach the place. Now, we can reach there within an hour," she adds.

According to the airport director most of the passengers in the flights are either software engineers or employees of MNCs in AP and Chennai. "The airport has a tremendous future if we get the international airport tag. If we get it, more operators will be ready to provide connectivity to many domestic and international destinations,'' he noted. The international passenger traffic in the same period saw an increase of 9% with 86,545 passengers travelling as against 79,469 in corresponding period in the previous period.

Point to be noted is, The international passenger traffic saw an increase of 9% without the addition of new routes and new flight, over that there were lot of cancellation of flights due to Air India management issues.
Addition of new routes to Jeddah, and atleast operation of couple of Emirates large body flights will help people from the region to connect directly to west via Dubai, because of Emirates large connectivity.

I had come by Qatar airways to Bangalore. Most of the passengers were going to Mangalore. Upon that only few people has come to Mangalore by flight. Others opted to go by bus reason no domestic flight tickets are available to Mangalore from Mumbai and Bangalore. All the flights are full. In Air India express there are no seats are available for next to 2 months from Doha.

20% Growth in Passenger Handling at Mangalore Airport
Daijiworld

Quote:
Mangalore, May 23 : Mangalore Airport has witnessed a quantum jump in its passenger handling with a growth of nearly 20% for the first four months of 2012.

Airport Director M R Vasudeva says that Mangalore airport handled 3.21 lakh passengers in the first four months of 2012 as against the 2.68 lakh passengers it handled during the same period last year. The growth is attributed to connectivity to newer locations and more flights resulting in more passenger volume.

Vasudeva said there are direct flights from Mangalore to Hyderabad and Chennai which has led to the growth of passenger traffic. Besides this there is an additional flight from Mangalore to Mumbai by Air India Express. “Earlier Air India Express flight coming from Dubai used to be parked at the airport whole day. To make the best use of the facility Air India Express has scheduled a regular flight to Mumbai. With these additional operations passenger traffic has witnessed quantum jump in the first four months of this year.

Out of the total passengers handled at Mangalore airport 86,544 were international passengers for the first four months of this year, which comes to 27% of the total passengers handled at this station. As of now Mangalore Airport has flights to most of the gulf countries. The flow of international passengers would have been much higher but for the lack of competitive price available from Mangalore, says Vasudeva. He further adds: “Due to lack of competitive pricing which many airlines offer from Mumbai or Cochin most passengers prefer to fly from these destinations which has affected our international passenger traffic”.

When asked whether declaring Mangalore as an International airport would enable more airlines to be connected with Mangalore, he said that such a status has nothing to do with connectivity of more airlines. Even with the present status of Mangalore Airport as a customs aerodrome different airlines can operate from here without any hindrances. The only criterion is that these airlines have to request the government to allow them to operate to international destinations, which would lead to a considerable increase in the passenger traffic at Mangalore airport, he stated.
There is one Airport in the state begging for flights without enough passenger base and here we have passengers and no enough number of flights

Passenger handling up 20% at Mangalore airport
BusinessLine

Quote:

File photo of the new integrated terminal building of Mangalore Airport

MANGALORE, MAY 22:
Passenger handling at Mangalore airport witnessed 20 per cent growth in the first four months of 2012.

The airport handled 3.21 lakh passengers in the first four months of calendar year 2012, against 2.68 lakh passengers in the corresponding period of 2011, registering a growth of 19.87 per cent.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr M. R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Airports Authority of India, Mangalore, attributed this growth to Mangalore's connectivity with more locations.

Mangalore airport is now directly connected with locations such as Hyderabad and Chennai. The connectivity between Mangalore and Hyderabad is attracting more passengers, he said.

International operations from Mangalore airport began in October 2006. The Indian population in West Asia contributes more than one-fourth to the total passenger handling at the airport.

INTERNATIONAL PASSENGERS

The airport — which is connected to locations such as Dubai, Muscat, Kuwait among others — handled 86,544 passengers from January-April 2012. This contributed 27 per cent to the total passengers handled at Mangalore airport.

In the first four months of 2011, the airport handled 79,469 international passengers, contributing 29.61 per cent to the total traffic during that period.

Mr Vasudeva said the number of international passengers handled at the airport is 7000 more compared to the first four months of 2011.

Mr Rajesh Sequera, co-ordinator of the UAE-based Karnataka NRI Forum, said direct connections between Mangalore and locations in West Asia have helped save time for passengers. This helped increase international passenger traffic.

Stressing the need for a direct connection between Mangalore and Saudi Arabia, he said it would further increase the air traffic from Mangalore.

However, he said more international airlines should be connected with Mangalore. For this, Mangalore should be declared as an international airport, he added.

Mangalore airport is a customs aerodrome with permission to handle international flights.

The total number of passengers handled at the airport increased from 6.74 lakh in 2007 to 8.47 lakh in 2011.
