Dapitan natives prepare for arrival of Jalosjos's

ILIGAN CITY -- Though an absolute pardon for former congressman Romeo Jalosjos remains uncertain, loyal Dapitanons are preparing for what they expect to be a grand homecoming before Christmas, said City Councilor Apple Marie A. Agolong in a phone interview last Monday evening.

"We have no idea and confirmation on the latest update of former congressman Jalosjos's absolute pardon this December, but we do not have control over Dapitanons will and plans for celebration," Agolong said.

Jalosjos declined to give comment except to say that his situation is still fluid as of this time.

It would be more than a fiesta celebration for Jalosjos, who was exiled in Bilibid prison for 16 years and will be met by his constituents from 50 barangays.

Dapitan City is about to commemorate the 2nd "Handuraw" (reminiscing) festival, a newly created historical activity to recall the life and works of Dr. Jose P. Rizal when the hero was in exile by Spanish colonizers in Dapitan City on July 17, 1892 until July 31 1896.

Rizal was executed in Bagumbayan on December 30, 1896.

Last year the descendants of Rizal like the Potacios and Malvars joined the Ambassador of Czech Republic for the wreath laying during the Rizal Day in December 30 last year in Dapitan City.

Councilor Agolong, also Tourism committee chair said, the second "Handuraw" festival will start its activities on December 27 with a grand float parade which depicts the legacies of Dr. Jose Rizal in Dapitan City.

Also marking the event are the launching of the book "The Correspondence of Dr. Jose P. Rizal and Dr. Ferdinand Blumentrit" complied by former Congressman Romeo G. Jalosjos and a Rizal look-alike contest for interested males who can portray the works and character of Dr. Jose Rizal.
