why wouldnt they redesign it to make it an EMU? Push-Pull seems to outdated, not to mention EMU would allow for greater capacity because you dont have locomotives at either end.

You are right. It's somehow outdated now but I think it's unavoidable because korea had no exprience to make high-speed train until HSR-350(or KTX-II). But they now made KTX-II and launched new high-speed rain project(HEMU-400x, or Highspeed Electric Multiple Unit-400㎞/h eXperiment) last year. If this project get results korea will get new high-speed train on 2012 or 2013.

HEMU-400x news

Quote:
The government plans to shell out big bucks to develop bullet trains, which can run at a maximum speed of 400 kilometers per hour, by 2012.

Science and Technology Minister Kim Woo-sik on Thursday chaired a meeting of science-related ministers to chart the bold scheme on the ultra-fast trains, dubbed the HEMU-400X.

``We will channel 96.4 billion won ($101.9 million) over the next six years through 2012 to build the HEMU-400X,’’ said Bang Yoon-sock, director at the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.

``After years of field tests, the next-generation bullet trains will be commercially launched sometime between 2015 and 2020,’’ Bang predicted.

Of the total to be injected into the six-year project, Bang said, 62.9 billion won will come from the government, which earmarked 8.9 billion won for this year.

The super-fast train is a successor of the HSR-350X, which can reach a speed of 350 kilometers per hour. The country funneled 256.9 billion won to develop the HSR-350X in 2002.

``It took 11 years and more than 250 billion won to build the HSR-350X because we lacked competitive technologies in the past,’’ Bang said.

``However, we think experiences with the HSR-350X will help us substantially reduce costs and time to make the 400-kilometer-per-hour bullet trains,’’ he said.

A total of 100 rolling stocks of the HSR-350X, which is currently under trial runs, will be commercially deployed by Korean Railroad, beginning in 2009.

Korea opened the bullet train era in 2004 when the nation phased in the French-built KTX trains that can run at 300 kilometers per hour.

Does that mean the HSR 350X was just a prototype? ROTEM built a plant in Turkey (EUROTEM) in cooperation with the Turkish TUVESAS in order to build highspeed trains for the new highspeed lines in Turkey and we thought that they are going to build the HSR 350X in Turkey. Are there two trains now or is this going to be the only highspeed train in production? That would mean we'll have these babies soon as well. Although HSR 350x was quite sexy this baby is even hotter!

As far as I know HSR 350X is just prototype. Like KTX (TGV korean version), Turkish version design would be different.

HSR 350X will be just EUROTEM's production. You can't see HSR 350X at the website of ROTEM. HSR 350X will be produced only in Turkey and KTX-II is another production. It will be manifactured only in Korea. I think both of them are same thecnology but different designs.

No, I don't think so. HSR 350 X was developed before Turkey even decided to build highspeed lines. That means it was just a prototype to develop a better train, namely the KTX II. And you can't see HSR350 x on the website because it's not a product to purchase, it's just a prototype. And I can remember having seen pictures of HSR 350x before the Rotem website was renewed.

No they say EUROTEM will produce highspeed train for Turkish railways. It was our own interpretation that HSR 350X will be produced for Turkey because it was the newest product of ROTEM but since it came out that HSR 350 X was just a prototype in order to develop the KTX II we can say that KTX II will be produced in Turkey and not the prototype HSR 350X. btw for those who ask wtf EUROTEM is, Eurotem is a joint venture between Korean ROTEM and Turkish TUVESAS. Euro+Rotem = Eurotem. Korea hopes to win the European market via Turkey.

the ceremony the picture of HSR 350X was behind the stange.

Anyway, we will wait and see what will happen and wich production will be manifactured. I think we must be patient about it.

you say "Korea hopes to win the European market via Turkey." this is so true. But I think they did the best thing. Bursa, Adapazarı, Izmit triangle has many factories like that including ford, toyota, mercedes (bus factory). But I am sure in the future, EUROTEM will produce its own designs and trains, seprately and independently, how TEMSA started with Mitsubishi but later became independent. Or ROTEM produced with French support at the beginning, of how CAF founded with French support.

I think that they have done a good job in maintaining continuity of style with the existing KTX TGVs
