Well, actually the Strait of Gibraltar is where two tectonic plates meet. So that would give some other problems

Yeah, crossing Israel's border is not very easy by car (not all countries though). Really, the quickest way is by ferry.

Thanks for the responses; I appreciate the information as I don't know much about what it's like to travel in that part of the world. I was mostly interested because a high standard road link between Africa and Europe would mean it would be possible to link the existing E-road network with the developing Trans-African Highway network.

A good ferry connection works good as well. Does Italy have any kind of ferry connection with Africa? Or do you travel via Malta to get to Africa?

Italy has a direct link to Algeria and Libya i think.

Ferry Links from Marseille to Algiers and Oran and from Sète near Montpellier to Tangiers and I thought als from Genua and Napels ... and Algeciras of course ...
