Beautiful Dharwad CITY

Sanmatinagar to Head Post Office Dharwad

Dharwad and Mangalore more or less have similar topography and greenery.

But Dharwad is much more peaceful and less populated.

Belgaum city was a big disappointment.

This city needs huge infrastructure revamping probably can be done with the CM's 100 crore grant.

BCC plans to collect Rs 1 cr property tax in month

TNN 8 December 2009, 09:47pm IST

BELGAUM: It seems urban development minister S Suresh Kumar's recent reprehension of Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) for its "mismanagement" has
kept the civic authorities on tenterhooks.

Besides expediting the process of collecting property tax, the authorities have set a target of collecting Rs 1 crore within one month. "I have promised the minister of collecting Rs 1-crore tax in a month. I'm sure of meeting that target at any cost," BCC commissioner S G Patil told TOI.

Patil said he has been conducting frequent meetings with tax inspectors and revenue inspectors besides personally reviewing the tax collection process.

BCC has been giving newspaper ads, urging the taxpayers to file tax before March and avail of 5% discount. To overcome problems due to staff shortage, the BCC has outsourced the tax collection work to self-help groups (SHGs) for the first time. The initiative was taken following suggestions from the minister. The commissioner has also issued notices to tax defaulters, hoping to collect Rs 34 lakh arrears. There are 624 such cases pending in the court.

Below 20 micron plastic bags banned in twin cities

TNN 8 December 2009, 09:42pm IST

HUBLI: In a major step towards tackling the plastic menace, Dharwad DC Darpan Jain has issued a circular, banning the sale/ usage of plastic bags below the thickness of 20 microns in the district.

S K Kolhar, executive engineer (solid waste management) of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, said the ban is intended to check the increased incidents of choked drains and burning of plastic, especially in twin cities, and check indiscriminate use of plastic as it poses a serious health hazard and pollute the environment.

Sources said the ban was imperative in the absence of proper solid waste management system in the twin cities, in spite of their generating around 400 tonnes of waste on a daily basis. Of this, about 80 tonnes is non-biodegradable. However, the circular is silent on plastic recycling units operating in the district.

Separate committees have been formed at corporation and taluk levels to monitor the ban. While HDMC commissioner will head the corporation committee, the respective tahsildars will head the taluk-level ones. Deputy director of food and civil supplies department, HDMC health officer and officials of weights and measures, pollution control
board and police departments will be the members of the committees.

The members of the committee will pay surprise visits to shops and other business establishments for inspection. Action will be initiated against those flouting the rules.

Kolhar said an action plan is being readied to successfully implement the ban through awareness programmes and putting up signboards at different places. Self-help groups have come forward to help shopkeepers with sufficient supply of paper bags, he added.

Soudha may cost Rs 350 crore

TNN 13 December 2009, 09:36pm IST

BELGAUM: The Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS), which is being built here, is estimated to cost the government Rs 350 crore.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting its construction work, public works minister C M Udasi said the work had started with the "maiden estimate" of Rs 232 crore. "But because of constant rise of construction cost, the SVS may cost the government Rs 350 crore by the time its is completed," he added.

The government had made a budget provision for Rs 62 crore in 2008-09 of which Rs 42 crore has already been spent on the project, the minister said.

The minister said they have not taken a final decision on building the Legislators' House. "Plans are on to implement the project through Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model," he said.

Udasi said legislature session would be held at SVS for 15-20 days in the year and on rest of the days, it would be utilized for conducting national and international seminars.

Legislators Jagdeesh Metgud, Sanjay Patil and Vishwanath Mamani were present.

Visnaya,I saw the site on which the Vidhan soudha is being built it would be more or less on the lines of bangalore architecture wise.

Belgaum is poised to be the second capital of the state, with the border issue in the Supreme court, the centre had stayed the announcement of it being the second capital.

Kannada and Marathi People in belgaum are harmoniously staying in the city. Some political elements raise the issue during elections.Even the people there are fed up of it.Now they are claiming not belgaum city but dome adjoining areas/villages in belgaum.

Belgaum as such is a beautiful city with salubrious climate round the year.It makes an ideal capital for the state given its location, which is diametrically opposite to bangalore cutting thro the central region of the state.

Third gate to Peeranwadi will be 120 feet road

On Tuesday the PWD department took the marking work for the proposed 120 feet road from 3rd gate to Peeranwadi.

This was a long demand by the industrialists of Udaymbag. The road widening was approved long back but as it is a part of NH 4A the PWD department earlier had said that it can’t take road widening work, but now after the district authorities issuing a order to the PWD to undertake the road widening work and has begun the work.

As this road leads from Udaymbag this road till Peeranwadi will ease a lot of traffic problems caused to the industries there. The work will commence soon.
Ukmad-A concerned citizen of belgaum

I could have covered this road in my shots but then just din't know that it was the piranwadi road.
