Roads leading to city to get facelift

HUBLI: Some of the roads leading to the city from the surrounding rural areas are all set to get a facelift. District minister Jagadish Shettar on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the development of Unkal-Maradagi, Sulla-Bengeri, Gopanakoppa-Shivalli roads besides other developmental works like gutters, bridges and housing facilities to all worth Rs 3.47 crores. Public Works Department will initiate the works.

Shettar said the development of roads besides providing an easy access to agricultural fields will also boost their property value. He said the works on developing the road between Sulla Cross and Gopanakoppa at a cost of Rs 2 crores had already begun.

He said the people of Gopanakoppa area have been demanding for a supermarket in their vicinity and the same will be a reality soon. The process of handing over six acres of land presently available with the horticulture department to the HDMC will be completed with the final order to this effect being expected shortly. A vegetable market and supermarket will come up in that place. He said the lakes in Santoshnagar, Nagashettykoppa and Bhairidevarakoppa will be rejuvenated with a cost of Rs 5 crores.

Putting up signboards next on HDMC's to-do list

30 important junctions, arterial roads identified

Work proposed on ‘build-operate-transfer' basis

HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), which has almost finished giving a facelift to the main roads of the twin cities utilising the special grants from the State Government, is now installing signboards at important junctions.

However, to mobilise funds for this purpose, the corporation will follow the PPP (public-private partnership) model, and the work will be taken up on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.

The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation plans to have signboards at as many as 30 important junctions and arterial roads of the twin cities.

The corporation has finalised the sizes of the boards to be installed at select locations.

The private firms that enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation would have to spend around Rs. 3 lakh towards the signboards.

In return, they would be allowed to display ads. A small space on the boards would be earmarked for slogans on social issues and for sensitising the public on traffic rules.

Outsourcing

To begin with, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has already got a signboard installed on Gokul Road here, near the airport.

According to HDMC Special Officer S.H. Naregal, the corporation would be signing MoUs with private firms for the installation of similar signboards in the remaining 30 locations.

Not a first

It is not the first time that the HDMC has adopted the PPP model. Five years ago, it took the same approach for the development and beautification of medians on the arterial roads, and for the construction of foot overbridges.

20 acres for Nazir Sab institute
Hindu

Quote:
HUBLI: The Dharwad district administration will provide 20 acres of land within a week for setting up Abdul Nazeer Sab State Institute of Rural Development (ANSSIRD) near Dharwad.

Convention

Speaking at the convention of the office-bearers of Shakti Kendras of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Hubli-Dharwad, here on Friday, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister and district in charge Jagadish Shettar said that the institute would come up at the Belur Industrial Area near Dharwad. It would give a big boost for rural development activities in the region.

Fund

He said that initially Rs. 10 crore had been sanctioned for construction of the institute building.

Mr. Shettar said the Government was planning to set up similar institutes at other places, including in Gulbarga and Bangalore.

The Minister said the State Government had secured the second place in the effective implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act schemes and he would receive an award at a function organised by the Union Government on Sunday in New Delhi.

Why such high tax for Hubli -Dharwad? Bangalore must be taxed heavily and that money must be put to use in T2 cities.Buggers are making people's life miserable.

HUBLI: An additional special grant of Rs. 100 crore, sought by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation from the State Government, has been approved.

Commissioner of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, K.V. Trilok Chandra, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the corporation would be going ahead with the action plan immediately. As per the plan, it would take up works on interior roads.

“Our plan is to get the works completed before the onset of monsoon. We will finish the tender process soon and issue work orders. We have earmarked Rs. 45 crore in the action plan for the works on the interior roads,” he said.

The corporation had almost utilised the Rs. 100-crore grants sanctioned earlier, he noted.

Development of parks

Dr. Chandra said if there was an early arrival of monsoon, the corporation would take up other works such as development of parks specified in the action plan.

Following the approval of the action, he said, district-in-charge Minister Jagadish Shettar held a meeting with officials, the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and all party leaders here on Wednesday.

The commissioner said the issue of whether to demolish the old supermarket building at Janata Bazaar or take up retrofitting of the structure was discussed at the meeting. It was decided to take up a detailed study of the existing structure before taking a final decision, he said.
