Mind your speed interceptors on the prowl

HUBLI: The police department has introduced two new interceptor vehicles in the city to stop motorists from overspeeding.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, police commissioner K Ramachandra Rao said the vehicles will play a vital role in checking traffic offenders.

Each interceptor is equipped with a CCTV camera, a breath analyzer and other modern equipment. It will capture the movement of vehicles and issue receipt if the motorist violates traffic rules, he added.
The vehicle, manned by a head constable and three constables and one PSI, will register the number of overspeeding vehicles, check and curb drunken driving cases.

About 24,485 traffic violation cases, including those for overspeeding and riding sans helmet, etc, had been registered in 2010. A fine of Rs 33.38 lakh was collected from erring motorists, he added.

Replying to query, DCP Chandiram Singh said that a team of police officers has been sent to Andhra Pradesh to trace a man who had "allegedly" buried his son at his house in Sheela Nagar here a few days ago. "We will arrest him soon," he added.

Unkal lake, park to be ready by year-end

Taking stock: Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain reviewing development works at the Unkal lake in Hubli on Monday.
Hubli: In all probability works on comprehensive development of the Unkal lake and the adjoining park in Hubli will be completed by December-end.

Speaking to presspersons on Monday after reviewing the progress of the works undertaken for development of the Unkal lake and park, Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Darpan Jain said majority of the civil works including strengthening the tank bund, fencing, pathways, amphitheatre with the capacity to accommodate 250 people would be completed by May-end. However, canteen and boating facility are likely to be ready in another four months.

Mr. Jain said after civil works are completed, work on the garden would begin. He added that Rs. 5-crore worth of works had been undertaken under the Rs. 100-crore special grants provided to Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation.

He said Unkal lake is spread across 230 acres and recreation facilities will come up on 8 acres of land adjacent to the old national highway between Hubli and Dharwad. A three-km long pathway will come up along the tank bund. A watch tower will also be constructed to enable visitors to enjoy the beauty of the lake.

Mr. Jain clarified that sewage that was being pumped into the lake will now be diverted. A sewer line from Unkal village had already been diverted and the other originating from Navanagar will also be diverted. This work had been taken up under the Asian Development Bank project for development of underground drainage system in the twin cities.

Meanwhile, the district administration plans to ban washing of clothes and also the cattle in the lake and it has already constructed a ‘dhobi ghat' next to the lake for the convenience of the public. Mr. Jain said after fencing of the park, people would not be allowed to wash clothes and cattle in the lake. And, arrangements for water supply to the dhobi ghat would be made in a week's time, he added.

During the month of May, the facility of accepting new passport applications in person has been extended in the regional passport office in Bangalore. This provision will be in force for a month.

These applications will be received between 9.30 am and 12 pm every day. A total of 300 applications will be received per day, on first come first serve basis. All the original documents required for passport issuance, along with a set of their Xerox copies, and demand drafts should be brought by the applications. Re-issue applications and PCC (police clearance certificate) applications will not be entertained. These applications will be accepted at Passport Seva Kendras as earlier.

The interested people can register their names for interviews by visiting the website, www.passportindia.gov.in. For new passports under Tatkal scheme, regional passport office in Koramangala, Bangalore, has to be contacted.

In view of a spurt in the number of passport applications, and to reduce the waiting period for the passport applicants, special provision for accepting 150 additional applications has been made in Mangalore and Hubli Passport Seva Kendras. This facility will come into operation on May 9, a release from the passport office said.

The roads look really good. However, as a person who drives the vehicle, I do not like the way the roads are being constructed.

It is not only about the roads shown in the picture, but majority of the roads in Karnataka are relayed with huge thick edges, which put the drivers and the vehicle in compromising conditions during overtaking.

It is quite obvious that when smooth roads are in the offing the acceleration is quite obvious.

HDMC to clear encroachments in Hubli

HUBLI: Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has taken measures to rid the city of encroachment, especially those on land reserved for gardens. Hubli has been facing encroachment-related problems for many years now, with land reserved for gardens being encroached upon.

Local organizations have alerted the corporation on land meant for gardens being encroached upon. In response to such an outcry, the HDMC enlisted properties belonging to it and displayed the same on its website. It also mentioned the number of properties earmarked for the development of gardens across the city.

The corporation had carried out a monthlong survey to assess the status of land kept for gardens. According to the survey, HDMC has 54 properties meant for gardens being encroached upon. The survey revealed that sheds, petty shops, and even houses have come up on such land.

HDMC formed a team comprising deputy director of town planning, executive engineers and the zonal officers to raze illegal constructions. The corporation has, in the last one week, demolished three constructions which had come on Mantur Road, Jaibhimnagar, Kotelingeshwara Nagar. "We are committed to make the city free from encroachment at the earliest," HDMC commissioner K V Trilokchandra told `The Times of India'.

The commissioner said they, with the help of the police department, will demolish all constructions that have come up on encroached land.

The corporation is serving notices to those who have encroached the land so they can vacate the place on their own. "We will act against those who fail to respond to our notice, and demolish their properties. After this drive, we will raze commercial buildings which have violated (building) by-laws," he added.

New-look park will be ready in a month
HUBLI: The Indira Glass House Park here will be open for public in a month's time. It's being given a facelift now.

Disclosing this to reporters during his visit to Unkal Lake Park, which is also getting a facelift, here on Monday, DC Darpan Jain said a toy train, to entertain children at the Glass House Park, is getting ready at Mysore Railway Workshop, and it will arrive shortly.

Jain said the works on laying the tracks for the train is underway. Though works on musical fountain has got delayed due to technical reasons, it will be ready when the park is open for the public.

On the development works at the Unkal Lake Park, Jain said the civil works will be finished by May-end. He said the development works include building a 3-km walking path, benches, watch tower, toilets, erecting grills on the lake bed, and raising ornamental plants, lawns, etc.

Jain said steps have also been taken for the construction of an open-air theatre for 250-strong audience and a roof canteen and provide boating facility by December-end.

The DC further said that measures have been taken to divert the sewage water from entering the lake and washing clothes/ livestock has been banned there.

Anand Padabettu, You are right While overtaking it will be difficult. It is initially road laid but in future they may expand the road width. during expansion they make the thick edge road to level.

yes goudar the road is initially laid but in future they are planing to build foot paths beside the roads coz on this road many collages and apartments are coming up so they made it like that.....
