Shettar said the four-laning works of Hubli-Dharwad will start on the third week of September. Tree cutting and shifting of electric poles to make way for development works has already begun. He said the four-laning works of the stretch of the road between Hubli airport and Hubli-Dharwad bypass has already started at a cost of Rs 20 crore.
TOI

That 4 lane road connecting Airport to Bypass road is Gokul road itself right?

BRTS will be taken up once work on road is over: Shettar

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar has said that the work on converting the old National Highway between Hubli and Dharwad into a four-lane road would begin in the second week of September.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone of a meditation pyramid at Nrupatunga Betta here on Monday.

Mr. Shettar, who is also the district in-charge, said preliminary work on shifting power lines and electricity poles, and felling of trees had begun.

The Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) between Hubli and Dharwad, he said, was also in the pipeline and would be taken up after the completion of the four-lane road.

The Minister said a connecting road would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 20 crore between the Hubli airport and the bypass.

Second biggest

Mr. Shettar said the meditation pyramid at Nrupatunga Betta would be second biggest of its kind in the State. It was being constructed on the lines of the one at Kanakapura near Bangalore, which could accommodate 6,000 people, he said.

The pyramid was being built at a cost of Rs. 1.12 crore, he said.

New system to ensure clean roads in twin cities

Quote:
HUBLI: For those batting for a strong Lokpal bill to curb the menace of corruption, this move of Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) should come as a respite.

Bribing the civic authorities to get their bills cleared without carrying out their duties properly will no more be an easy task for the cleaning contractors of twin cities. A new system in place called Point Book system will make it mandatory for the cleaning contractors to get clearance from the residents approving their work to see their bills passed.

This follows mounting complaints from citizens about unswept streets and stinking gutters. Just like police constables on night beat sign the registers kept at strategic locations, the cleaning contractors have to get the signatures of residents approving their work. The brain behind the idea is none other than the HDMC commissioner K V Trilokchandra, who is a former IPS officer.

Houses at strategic locations have been identified as points in each ward by the civic authority. The points are generally located at both the corners and in the middle of the road. Once the cleaning workers finish their work of sweeping or clearing gutters, they will call the concerned resident for inspection who will sign the book only if he/she is satisfied by the work. The contractors have to attach the report of residents verifying their works at the time of submitting the bills to the corporation to get it passed.

HDMC officials say the idea which was introduced on trial and error basis in some wards has clicked. The number of complaints with regard to cleaning of streets and gutters has come down since the system came in place a fortnight ago. Hence it has been planned to extend it to the entire 67 wards of twin cities.

HDMC special officer S H Naregal said that in the absence of such a system the cleaning workers used to carryout their works properly only at main roads and where the residents are strict. But they used to neglect the interiors. He said that by empowering citizens, the HDMC has left no room for the health inspectors to take their job lightly.

Tata Motors to set up a new plant in Dharwad

Quote:
India's largest truck maker Tata Motors is adding fresh capacity in South India. Tata Motors already has a plant in Dharwad but it is setting up an all new facility there to manufacture its light commercial vehicles. The company will invest Rs. 900 crore in the new facility.

When contacted, Tata Motors spokesperson said, “We are creating a capacity for about 100,000 per annum to produce the Tata Ace Zip and Tata Magic Iris at the Dharwad facility. The capacity can be scaled up, if required. This is a new plant altogether, expected to be commissioned in the January – March 2012 quarter.”

Tata Ace Zip and Tata Magic Iris were commercially launched by the company in May. Tata Motors’ Pantnagar plant produces the entire small commercial vehicles range including its top selling LCV the Tata Ace. “Once the full ramp-up of Magic Iris and Ace Zip is achieved over the next 3 months, the Pantnagar facility will be producing at an annualised rate of about 400,000 units”, said the company.

Experts say that by setting up a new facility, Tata Motors is also improving its distribution and marketing strategy in south India to take on competition from Chennai-based Ashok Leyland. In alliance with Nissan, Ashok Leyland will soon launch a light commercial vehicle ‘Dost’ in the same space as Tata Ace. Mahindra & Mahindra also launched a similar product Maxximo last year. Tata Motors LCV sales led by Ace have been growing even when auto sales growth across the board has gone down. In July, Tata Motors LCV sales grew by 22 per cent versus its medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales which grew by just 4 per cent.

But growth in commercial vehicle sales might go down further, says Care Ratings auto industry research analyst Vishal Srivastava “Any further rise in interest rates would impact the CV industry adversely because a rise in interest costs lowers the profitability of transport operators in India who buy these vehicles.”

Tata Motors stock closed at Rs. 700.70 on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday down 3.90 per cent from previous close.

Outsourcing education: Malaysian doctors will be made in Belgaum

Quote:
While organisations are known to outsource IT projects and various works to other countries, here is a case you might not have heard of: University of Science Malaysia (USM) has outsourced the entire process of education to a medical college in Belgaum, which caters exclusively to students from the south-east Asian nation.

KLE Group of Institutions has set up a college on a 10-acre campus in Belgaum that imparts medical education exclusively to students from south-east Asian countries, mainly Malaysia. Prabhakar Kore, chairman of the group, told DNA that they started the college after USM approached them in this regard.

“We will provide good teaching along with infrastructure but the examination and curriculum is as per their (USM) syllabus,” Kore said.

He informed that USM would select the students. The five-year course, called MD, is different from Indian syllabus.

How it happened
Kore said USM wanted to start a college in Malaysia itself but could not do so because of various hurdles posed by local rules. He said Malaysia has few teachers for medical stream and hiring Indian teachers is not practical either because getting a local licence for it is tough.

Further, he said, even his group cannot set up a college there because of the rules.

However, he said the KLE Group could cater to the needs of the foreign students with their existing infrastructure in India. He said they have been getting students from other countries since 1965. Shifting his attention to the college that is being started in association with USM, he said from this academic year they would be getting 100 students in every batch.

About fees, Kore said it was not finalised yet and a call on it would be taken after considering expenditures on lab, faculty, building, hostel and other infrastructure.

16 mini-bus stations in twin cities proposed

The North Western Karnataka Road Transportation Corporation (NWKRTC) has proposed to construct mini-bus stations at 16 places in Hubli-Dharwad cities.

NWKRTC divisional controller N. Sangappa said here on Monday that the process of identifying the lands for the project has begun. Alongside, NWKRTC was contemplating constructing a mini-bus terminal in the city. But the place for the mini-bus terminal was yet to be finalised. A proposal to this effect would be submitted to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation shortly, he said.

About the identification of land in 16 places he said two acres of land each will be identified near the railway stations in Hubli and Dharwad, one acre each near Karnatak University, University of Agricultural Sciences, Sriram Nagar, Sadhan Keri, Kelgeri, Gandhi Nagar, Navaloor, Gokul, Tarihal, Kalyan Nagar, Saptapur, Dasanakoppa, and the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) in Dharwad.

In addition to this, NWKRTC has planned to construct a new bus depot in Dharwad city and has acquired 2.20 acres of land at Gulagunjikoppa here for the purpose.
