Do those buildings exist, or were most of them torn down?

Some of the most significant exist today, other are being reconstructed and some are gone unfortunately.
Most of historical downtown Sofia was very badly damaged by the allies bombing during WW2. After that the commies begin to build new buildings instead of rebuilding old ones.
However there are still a lot of old houses and bigger buildings with classical architecture left in Sofia, some of them are in bad conditions though, and lack maintenance.
You can check the photo thread in my signature to see the city downtown today (although there's just a part shown) where most of the old buildings are situated.

A big part of the downtown area that consisted of those small streets is nowadays called the Largo, which consists of three pretty imposing communist era buildings, so I doubt they will level them down. Besides around the whole era, the discovered ruins of the ancient Roman city, which is currently being integrated into the new metro station as a cultural complex.

Beautiful! Does anyone know how much of this has been retained? I know that the imposing theatre still stands, what about the rest, including that grand hotel?

Sofia has a beautiful city center whose many late 19th and early 20th century buildings have recently been restored. In some areas this neo-Classical and Secession architecture sits side by side with the monolithic constructions of the communist period. There are also many glossy new buildings, particularly office centers, and some have made a real effort to integrate their modern glass and metal components with the original facades of the buildings. Outside of the center most of the city’s 1.1 million inhabitants live in the monstrous socialist housing complexes but beyond these, the city is surrounded on all sides by wonderful mountain ranges.
