Widow dies after woman falls and lands on her
10 February 2010
South China Morning Post

The widow of a man killed in a construction site accident in 2007 died yesterday when an elderly neighbour landed on her after falling 27 floors.

Cleaner Chan Kwai-mui, 51, was on her way home from work to her flat in Yiu On Estate, Ma On Shan, when the 74-year-old woman fell while collecting clothes from a rack on the wall outside her flat.

Both women died in the impact.

Chan was the wife of Tam Shing, 51, one of two workers killed in the collapse of a tower crane being used to demolish the Hennessy Centre, site of the former Mitsukoshi department store, in Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay, in July 2007. The couple are survived by two adult children.

Police said Chan, who worked part-time at the Ma On Shan police station canteen, was walking home to her 11th-floor flat in Yiu Wing House at about 11.30am when the other woman lost her footing while collecting washing in her 27th-floor home.

"It appears the elderly woman who was about 1.52 metres tall stood on a toolbox to collect clothes from the laundry rack. We believe she lost her balance and fell out of the window," a police officer said. The window did not have a grille.

The elderly woman fell directly on top of Chan a short distance from the entrance of the building.

"The force of the fall was strong as the elderly woman was heavily built and she fell 27 floors. Chan suffered multiple injuries from her head to her legs," the officer said.

The deaths were discovered by a security guard who heard a loud bang and found the two women lying unconscious on the ground. Paramedics declared them dead at the scene.

The old woman's identity was confirmed when her son, having failed to contact her, returned home at 4.30pm. The woman, surnamed Lam, lived him and her grandson.

Top Causeway Bay landlord profit up 70pc to $2.7b
The Standard
Thursday, March 11, 2010

Hysan Development Company (0014) saw net profit for 2009 surge 70 percent over the previous year to HK$2.7 billion.

The largest landlord in Causeway Bay attributed the rise to a fair valuation gain of HK$1.25 billion. A final dividend of 54 Hong Kong cents has been recommended.

Recurrent underlying profit for the period also rose 4.1 percent to HK$1.11 billon as the firm's core leasing activities improved. Executive director Wendy Yung Wen-yee is bullish about the company's prospects this year as rentals should see a steady increase.

Hysan's newly appointed chief executive officer, Gerry Yim Lui-fai, said the reconstruction of Hennessy Centre in Causeway Bay will be the focus this year.

The project is in its first stage and the underground section will be completed by June, he said. The reconstruction is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Yim said capital expenditure this year and next will be up to HK$2 billion, most of which will be allocated for the reconstruction of Hennessy Centre.

Leighton Centre will start renovations this year and the company is in negotiations with tenants there.

The stock was up 0.67 percent to close at HK$22.4 yesterday.

Last Saturday I attend a seminar for the Green Building Design.

The Director of Design and Project of Hysan Development Co., Ltd. talk about the design concept of the new "Hennessy Centre". Here are some PowerPoint that present on that day.

That was the fatal crane collapse in 2007 that killed a few workers. That probably delayed this project for a few months. But since the crane has long been removed, I wonder why it is taking so long.
