WESTON-SUPER-MARE | Full Summary of Projects

As I can't get the Tropicana thread title changed so here is a new one to cover all projects in Weston-super-Mare (note spelling!).

They are:

The Tropicana planning application will not be called in by the Secretary of State so will get the go ahead once all the planning details have been sorted.

Plans for the New Pier, with sprinklers, have been submitted today to North Somerset Council.

Waitrose are replacing the B&Q and Iceland stores in Warne Road.

The Knightstone development is complete and just waits for someone to occupy the 2 business units.

The first phase of the beach work is complete and works starts this week on the prom.

No news on replacing Dolphin Square.

Urban Splash continue to draw up plans for the Old Pier.

2 Tesco Express are opening near a Spar and a Coop.

Proposals are expected early next year to rearrange the road layout near the Pier.

Erection of a temporary 40metre high observation wheel until 30 November 2009.

The applicants, World Tourist Attractions Ltd, have a number of Wheels across the UK including Manchester, Belfast and Stoke-on-Trent as well as sites in Australia and India. The wheel is 40 metres in height and is composed of 30 glass sided observation pods.

The application will now go through the normal planning process. The target date for determination of the application is 6 April.

If approved the wheel will be located on the Beach Lawns, adjacent to the motorcycle park next to the Tourist Information Centre and will remain in place throughout the summer season until 30 November.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, deputy leader and executive member responsible for tourism, said: "Obviously this application has to go through the due planning process but early discussions have indicated that there are no "show stoppers" at this stage.

"We have selected a site deliberately away from the residential areas of the Beach Lawns and carried out consultation with the nearest residents. That has indicated that the majority are looking forward to this new attraction on the seafront. The Wheel will also help to offset the temporary loss of the Grand Pier and I am sure will be a popular new attraction for our tourists this coming summer."

Go ahead for pier plans
Date: 12 Mar 2009 Two spectacular new attractions set to transform Weston-super-Mare seafront were given the green light by North Somerset Council tonight (Thursday 12 March 2009).

The council's West Area Committee unanimously approved exciting plans for a new state-of-the-art Grand Pier to replace the one destroyed by fire last year and a London Eye-style observation wheel on the nearby Beach Lawns.

The new pier is intended to be a year-round, multi-purpose attraction including:

A new three-floor pavilion which will be used as a family entertainment centre, but will also be able to accommodate functions, concerts and other entertainment events. It will incorporate indoor rides such as dodgems, ghost train, go-carts and a 4D cinema, as well as shops, restaurants, cafes, including an Edwardian themed tea room, drinking establishments, hot food takeaways and conference facilities.
A 91-metre high observation tower with a moveable viewing deck on the seaward end of the pier. The tower would provide a ride in which visitors are seated in a revolving viewing capsule which transports them to the top and back.
A central shelter along the length of the pier with two overhead rides - a dragster ride and a mock surfing ride. The shelter can be converted to provide a fully enclosed walkway in the winter.
A retractable glazed canopy over the existing courtyard entrance at the shore end of the pier.
An external lighting system to illuminate the pier.
A bus/coach layby and passenger shelter on Marine Parade to drop off and pick up visitors.
Replacement decking for the areas lost to the fire and new piles to support the new pavilion.
West Area also gave the go-ahead for plans by World Tourist Attractions Ltd to site a 40-metre high observation wheel on the seafront until the end of November.

The wheel will have 30 glass-sided observation pods, each capable of accommodating up to eight people. It will be sited on the Beach Lawns adjacent to the motorcycle parking area next to the Tourist Information Centre.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, the council's deputy leader and executive member responsible for tourism, has welcomed the new attractions.

He said: "I doubt anyone watching the pier pavilion burn down, as I did just over seven months ago, would have imagined that the owners and the council could have reached this point in the redevelopment so quickly.

"Setting up a joint Pier Task Force immediately after the disaster to cut through bureaucracy helped, but I want to also pay tribute to officers who have individually burned the midnight oil to clear the planning application and legal issues involved. There is still some way to go before we see the new pier arising from the ashes, but we are committed to working with the pier owners and Weston's wider tourist industry to make this venture a success.

"In the meantime the "Weston Eye" is only the first of several new attractions planned for this summer to keep the visitors coming. Tourism remains a major employer and income generator for North Somerset and we need to maintain and grow visitor numbers whilst we wait for the pier to re-open."

After the West Area meeting, the pier's owners Kerry and Michelle Michael issued the following statement:

"We are delighted to have secured planning permission and listed building consent for the new pavilion building and we are now keen to get on with the job of rebuilding as soon as practically possible.

"Our design team have been working flat out for many months to bring this project together and came up with a concept, which was everyone's overwhelming favourite. We would like to extend our thanks to them for the tremendous progress they have made in such a short period of time.

"Getting planning permission is great but it just another step along the way. We still need the co-operation of North Somerset Council as surrounding land owner to make this scheme work. That co-operation is vital to make the scheme happen. We are working hard to achieve that as soon as possible.

"We want to make the Grand Pier in Weston the best pier in the world and we will continue the search that has been going on worldwide for the last few months to source rides and attractions. Our travels will continue until the day we re-open to ensure that when we do, the pier will be an exciting place for people to have fun and enjoy themselves with the very latest amusements and equipment available.

"Following the devastating fire last July, we pledged to re-build the Pier and we intend to do so, as quickly as we can. Our team will continue their work to ensure that not a single day is lost. The Pier has already been scaffolded and now we have planning permission, we can appoint a contractor who will be on site within three weeks.

"It is still our aim to re-open in time for the main summer season next year and we will do our very best to keep disruption to an absolute minimum during the re-building process.

"We believe that Weston-super-Mare can become more prosperous and be Britain's most sought-after seaside destination with a world-class pier at its heart."

Keep these great pictures coming. I was gutted when I heard about the fire and I'm delighted that the pier is being rebuilt.

Is that Blackpool, the minor seaside resort in the north of England?
