NOT even the carton of beer given to her by the Government was enough to wake up our symbolic 500,000th citizen.

Born 10 days ago, Sophie Pettit was blissfully unaware of the media attention surrounding her yesterday.

In a scene reminiscent of an election campaign, Premier David Bartlett held the half-millionth person in his arms, smiling for the cameras.

"This is a symbolic day for Tasmania and our growing population is a cause for optimism and confidence in the state's future," Mr Bartlett said.

"Sophie has been born into what I believe is the most beautiful place in the world with the most enviable lifestyle."
