P 12M to uplift runway lights at Legazpi airport

LEGAZPI CITY --- The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said civil and electrical works will soon start with the rehabilitation of the runway lighting system of the Legazpi Airport that had been destroyed by Super Typhoon Reming in 2006.

P12million have been released by the CAAP for the lights that stretch some 2.2 kilometers along the Legazpi airport runway.

Edgardo Ramos, CAAP Legazpi chief at the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) during the “Ulat sa Bayan” forum said rehabilitation works will be completed by June this year.

He said with the installation of new runway lights, arrival and departure of major passenger planes at the city airport would soon resume.

He said with Mayon Volcano, Ligñon Hill and Kimantong Range situated near the airport, it becomes quite difficult for the installation of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) facility at the airport.

The ILS is among the facilities used by the CAAP to comply with international airport standards and is needed by Bicol airports to be accredited as International Safety Organization (ISO) compliant.

The Legazpi City Airport is nestled on a 75 hectare lot, some 2,400 meters north of the city proper.

The airport has a single runway with a length of 2,280 meters and width of 36 meters. There are two connecting taxiways with a width of 21 meters each.

The airport services the daily flights of the Philippine Airlines (PAL), Cebu Pacific, and other government and private airplanes.

I noticed that the airport is not very secure in Legazpi, while we were about to take off, there was a goat too close to the runway. The Airport should be properly fenced I think.

Legaspi Airport has an important place in Philippine Airlines history. It's one of the first few airports which the then newly-established airline (the first in Asia) served. It's interesting to note that there used to be direct flights between Legaspi and Tacloban en route to Cebu
