Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RD)

Udupi, Jan 30: With the inauguration of a turf wicket by Brijesh Patel, secretary of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) here on Friday January 29, Manipal University hopes to host national cricket during the next season. Impressed with the facilities at the ground, the former Indian cricketer said the university could be a wonderful venue for big-time cricket.

KPL matches and also the under-19 and under-22 matches can be played straight away he said. With the addition of dressing rooms and a pavilion, even Ranji matches and other bigger games can be played, he added. He also pointed out the scope for an academy to come up here.

Brijesh was happy with not only the four turf wickets, but also the ground, which is a carpet of green. He said it was comparable with the best in the country and that it also met the standards required to host a big match.

Later, Patel oversaw the sports facilities at the university. He was particularly impressed with the sports complex which is coming up on the campus. The complex has gymnasiums, a basketball court, four squash courts, five badminton courts and a walking track all air-conditioned.

As for the facilities at the ground, there are eight practice pitches including six of matting and two turf wickets. Moorugadde gets hanging foot-bridge finally

Quote:
Koppa, Jan 30, DHNS:

Moorugadde in Koppa taluk has got a hanging foot-bridge now.

With the completion of the works of this bridge across Seethanadi, the long-pending demand of around 500 families in Karkigonda and Gundappa Maidan, most of them daily wagers, has been realised.

People had to take a longer route to visit Moorugadde Chamundeshwari temple every Friday. The bridge connects the villagers with Jayapura town. The project has been completed at an expenditure of Rs 9 lakh, which is a part of the special Naxal package.

The demand was there for several decades. The bridge is a brainchild of retired IAS officer Chiranjeevi Singh, the then Panchayat Raj Department Principal Secretary V P Baligar who had made a special study of the problems of the Naxal-infested areas in the Western Ghats region.

Engineer Girish Bharadhwaj, specialised in constructing hanging foot-bridges, is the architect for this bridge too. Taluk Panchayat member Suma Nagesh expressed her pleasure over the completion of the work in a short duration.

Banning of vehicles in Car Street unscientific: Vedike
Quote:
The Naalku Veethi Nivasigala Vedike staged a protest before the Deputy Commissioners office against the district administrations order banning vehicles in the Car Street here on Saturday.

The activists alleged that the decision will paralyse entire business and livelihood of the people residing in the area. The district administrations decision supporting the ban, in the name of security to the temple, is sheer unscientific. The area is a business hub of the city for over 500 years.

The ban was implanted as precautionary arrangements prior to Paryaya Mahotsava and later the decision was made permanent, they added. If parking and vehicular movement is permitted in the area behind the temple, then why not in the Car Street?

The present parking zones and other alternative routes chosen for plying of the vehicles pose similar threat to the security of the temple. It seems that some vested interests are behind the forceful ban, they added.

Former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MLA Gopal Poojary, Veronica Kernelio, Members Janardhan Bhandarkar, Amrith Shenoy, Vijaya Raghava Rao, Sripad Hegde and others were present on the occasion.

Buses in Udupi can no more have TV sets
Quote:

Udupi Feb 1: Gone are the days when buses plying through Udupi district screen movies. As per a recent notification issued by district administration, TV sets are banned in the buses.

The decision has been taken in the backdrop of complaints that obscene scenes in the movies screened in some buses cause embarrassment to the women passengers. The journey is made nauseating with sounds and scenes that go uncensored. Even though some take pleasure in their travel with the entertainment offered in the buses, most of them seem to be disturbed.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Deputy Commissioner Hemalatha informed that the step has been taken after receiving complaints from women folk regarding the discomfort. The films that are screened comprise obscene scenes that make women embarrassed. It is nuisance.

In fact public should get the delight of the trip in the midst of sightseeing experiences, she added. Arrangements have been made to make surprise visits to regulate the TV mess in the buses. The buses that go against the notification have to pay heavy fine, she said.

DK, UK, Udupi citizens to get unique IDs first

Quote:
Bangalore, DH News Service:People in 193 villages in the coastal districts will be the first in Karnataka to get unique identification number from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), headed by Nandan Nilekani.

The villagers are expected to get their numbers by the end of this year.
The Centre launched the national population register programme to identify citizens of the country. The programme was first implemented in coastal areas as they are considered easy entry points for outsiders.

The perpetrators of the Mumbai attack reportedly entered the country through sea route. In Karnataka villages of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi were identified for the project.

The NPR began in the coastal region in September 2009. By the end of March 2010, collection of data is expected to be over. Dr C Chandramouli, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, in Bangalore on Saturday, said the enumerators would be collecting information under 15 items, including nationality.

“Every individual, except those foreigners with diplomatic status, irrespective of his nationality will come under this programme,” he said.

Objections

In the next step, photograph and biometric identification (prints of 10 fingers) of all aged above 15 would be taken. Later the prepared list would be pasted in every village panchayat to receive objections.

“Some may find mistakes in their names or some may raise objection to nationality of some persons in their neighbourhood. Once the objections are addressed, the list database will be sent to UIDAI,” he said.

The UIDAI will check if any double entries in the data. The bio-metric identification marks, unique for each individual, will be helpful to tackle double entries.

Following which the authority will issue unique identification number. “As per the timetable we have adopted, the villagers in coastal region of Karnataka may get their numbers by end of 2010,” said T K Anil Kumar, Director, Census Operations of Karnataka.
