Milk federation mulls dairy unit in Udupi

Quote:
MANGALORE : The Dakshina Kannada milk Union Federation is scouting for a suitable place in Udupi district to establish a higher capacity dairy processing unit following capacity constraints at its existing unit at Manipal.

Federation president Raviraj Hegde told TOI that they are scouting for a 6-10 acre land in between Brahmavar and Udupi for the new unit, which will have the capacity to process 1.5 lakh litres of milk per day.

The project cost is tentatively pegged at Rs 20-30 crore, depending upon the price of the land. Though Manipal dairy can process 60,000 litres of milk per day, it is working well above its capacity by processing close to one lakh litres. 'We get nearly one lakh litres from our members in Udupi district. The existing capacity is being squeezed and hence we want to establish a higher capacity unit keeping in mind the future requirements and procurements,' he added.

There is sufficient land, close to 110 acres, available at the now defunct Brahmavar Sugar Factory, but the federation is not keen due to the liabilities of the sugar factory. 'This may force us to buy land at higher cost. We have requested the state government to give us land in the Krishi Kendra nearby. If it materializes, the unit should come up soon,' he added.

Regarding the Mangalore processing unit at Kulshekar, Hegde said that it had sufficient capacity at 2 lakh litres. Incidentally, the unit gets only 90,000 litres from its members.

Though Udupi district's milk procurement is sufficient for the demand, in Mangalore the demand outstrips the supply. While the procurement is just 90,000 litres per day, the demand is close to 1.6 lakh litres, forcing the federation to procure excess from Karnataka Milk Federation's diaries in Hassan, Mysore and Mandya.

Beauty surrounds this monolith in Venur

Quote:
Ronald Anil Fernandes

Situated on the bank of River Phalguni (Gurupur) and covered with picturesque mountains and hills, Venur, a small town in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, was once a great seat of Jainism.

The presence of 35-foot tall monolith of Bhagawan Bahubali or Lord Gomateshwara (one of the prominent 4 in Karnataka and 2nd oldest) and many basadis make the place a popular pilgrimage centre for Jains even to this day.

Interestingly, not many people know that Karnataka has many important Jain pilgrim centres, temples and monuments. Shravanabelagola, Dharmasthala, Karkala, Moodbidri, Venur, Humcha, Narasimharajapura will astonish the visitors by their vast and abundant Jain heritage. Jainism with their rich cultural heritage and noble preaching of non-violence and peace always enjoyed a significant status in Karnataka.

With the Mahamastakabhisheka (anointing of the statue with water, tender coconut, milk, sugarcane juice and saffron paste and sprinkled with sandal wood powder, turmeric, and vermilion) scheduled to be held between January 28 and February 5, 2012 under the aegis of Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade, the little town is gearing up to witness the anointing of the Lord. Though the Mahamastakabhisheka is performed once in 12 years, as per the records available, the ritual has been performed only three-times in Venur in the last 110-years, that is, in 1928, 1956 and the last one in 2000.

407-year-old statue

The architectural grandeur of Lord Bahubali at Venur, once the capital of the Ajila Dynasty, was established by Thimmanna Ajila (1558-1616 AD), one of the most prominent Kings of the dynasty, in 1604 AD. He was said to be a direct descendant of Chamundaraya, who built the statue at Shravanabelagola. The statue is supposed to have been sculptured by Amarashilpi Jakanachari. The Kings of Ajila Dynasty ruled the region from 1154 to 1786 AD.

The colossal idol of Lord Bahubali stands on a high platform facing westward. The beautifully carved sculpture of Lord Bahubali with elongated ears, palms stretching up to knees, curly hair, depiction of anthill and creepers entwining both hands is awesome.

As you enter this holy place, you will come across Manstambha or the column of dignity with idols of 24 Thirthankars. According to the inscriptions in the temple at Venur, this was completed in the year 1489. The shrine of Chandranatha and Shantinatha Swamy, built in stone is another gem of Venur. The statue of Lord Shantinath is built on a black rock measuring up to 5 feet in height and is a magnificent piece of art. This apart, there are Jain basadis scattered throughout the little town, that include Sri Adeeshwara swamy basadi, Sri Parshwanatha swamy basadi and Sri Shanthishwara swamy basadi.

Artistic works, great sceneries and beautiful architecture make Venur a great place to visit. Besides the richness of religion, Venur also provides a lot of insight to the Jain history and its evolution.

With the State government releasing Rs 2 crore to develop infrastructure in the region and with an expected 2 lakh visitors to the little town, the 2nd Mahamastakabhisheka in this century is going to be a mega event.

Speaking to City Herald, Padmaprasad Ajila, the descendent (14th generation) of Thimmanna Ajila, said that the Jains have also planned novel projects including organising medical camps in and around Venur for the benefit of all people irrespective or caste or creed. Meanwhile, former minister and MLA Abhayachandra Jain, who also hails from the same community, said that the poojas on each day (for 9 days) would cost approximate Rs 8 lakh, besides other expenses.

Interestingly, there is a strong belief that Mahamastakabhisheka would also cleanse the human beings after witnessing the glorious ceremony for the lord, who personified sacrifice, non-violence and compassion. Each ingredient poured on the Lord has its own significance — water to cleanse, sandalwood to spread the fragrance of Lord’s virtues, milk as a symbol of purity, cane juice to relieve hunger and choorna to beautify!

Legend

According to Jain scriptures, Bahubali was the second of the 100 sons of the first Thirthankara, Lord Rishabha and was the king of Podanpur. He was known for the strength in his arms as depicted by his name.

Legend has it that Bahubali was challenged by his brother Bharatha over the succession to the throne. Bahubali took on the challenge and duelled with his brother in three forms such as ‘Drishtiyuddha,’ ‘Mallayuddha’ and ‘Jalayuddha’.

Bahubali emerged victorious but was disgusted with the quest of material wealth that made him fight his own brother. Renouncing his kingdom and all worldly pleasures, he went on to pursue ‘Moksha’ (salvation) and stood in a deep meditation for years.

How to reach

Venur is situated about 55 km away from Mangalore, between Moodbidre and Guruvayanakere. There are many buses to Venur from Moodbidre as well as Guruvayanakere (Belthangady). Its walkable distance from Venur to the monolith statue, which is hardly 400 metres away.

Shortest among 4

The 35-foot statue of Bhagawan Bahubali in Venur is the shortest among four statues while the 57-foot statue at Shravanabelagola is the tallest. The statues at Karkala and Dharmasthala are 42-foot and 39-foot tall respectively.

The architectural grandeur of Lord Bahubali at Shravanabelagola is considered to be the world’s largest monolithic stone statue (and also the oldest) with inscriptions in Kannada and Tamil dating back to 981 AD. The statue at Venur, the 2nd oldest statue, dates back to 1604. The statues at Karkala and Dharmasthala were established in 1432 and 1975 respectively.

As per the tradition, the next Mahamastakabhisheka at Karkala, Shravanabelagola and Dharmasthala will be held in 2014, 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Bringing back to life a slice of history

Quote:

The Suralu palace which was once upon a time known for its elegance and majesty is now in a dilapidated condition calling for the immediate attention seeking measures to conserve the unique mud palace.

The ram shackled Suralu palace representing the culture and tradition of Tulunadu is the mute witness for the wonderful royal reign of Tholahar dynasty that ruled the area for nearly 400 years.

Situated in the serene milieu of flushing greens, the palace has the architecture of Jaina tradition as envisioned all the way through the influence of Tulunadu culture. The palace is in the midst of picturesque natural feast besides stretching towards the layers of the foothills. Built truly in a methodical way, the huge palace is able to sustain all its charm and grace till date even in its remotest bad condition.

The mud mixture used to build the palace is strong enough to hold the artistically carved huge doors and windows. The palace is entirely built with the clay mixture. The two layered palace comprises intricately designed quarters with a palatial verandah, popularly known as “pattada chavadi” in the centre.

Each and every room of the palace is secured with complex door system. The tradition of confidentiality thereby concealing the security seems to be evident in the structure. Furthermore every nook and corner of the palace including the floors has deep essence of Jaina culture imbibed within itself.

Beautifully carved temple within the palace premises offers a sort of spiritual experience. The deity worshipped in the temple is Goddess “Padamavathi”. The arch at the entrance door of the palace is indeed an architectural wonder that is engraved with sensitive carvings.

The existence of the Tholahar dynasty goes back to 1042 AD as mentioned in the stone inscriptions found at Sagar in Shimoga district. The reference to the dynasty is also done in another stone inscription found at Barkur in Udupi district and the year mentioned in the inscription differs from the year mentioned in the stone inscriptions found at Sagar. The stone inscription found at Barkur refers the existence of the dynasty to the year of 1139. However, the copper plate inscription of Queen Madanadevi Tholaharti mentions that the dynasty was predominant till 1691.

The government has come forward to renovate the palace by extending minimal support. The amount sanctioned for the upgradation of the palace is around Rs 1.6 crore. MLA Raghupathy Bhat informed City Herald that the government has sanctioned initially an amount of Rs 1.6 crore to take up the work. However, the fund allotted for the purpose is not sufficient to renovate the palace entirely. We need additional funds of Rs 10 crore to take up entire palace restoration works. The work is assigned to Nirmiti Kendra and technical advice will be taken from Hastashilpa Foundation, he added.

Deputy Commissioner Dr M T Reju informed that the archaeological department has conceptualised the plan and the plan is yet to get finalised concretely, he added.

There is no dearth in our country for archeological wonders embodying the affluent legacy that unfolds the saga of the past. On the other hand, there is really the dearth for care and concerns to be bestowed on these precious treasures, which lost once, will always remain lost as imaginary pictorial reminiscence of the history.

How to reach?

The Suralu palace is 25 km from Udupi. One can reach the palace via Udupi-Brahmavar-Santhekatte-Mandarthi route or Udupi-Brahmavar-Kokkarne route. Mangalore Airport is the nearest airport. Udupi Railway Station is the nearest railway station. The palace is reachable by road from Udupi.

Manna Palla Lake to be made a major picnic spot

A Rs. 6.5-crore master plan is ready for its development
Quote:

Picture perfect: The Manna Palla Lake with the small island in Manipal.

The picturesque Manna Palla Lake here is likely to emerge as a major picnic spot, thanks to a Rs. 6.5-crore master plan for its development.

The master plan has been prepared by the district administration, Udupi Urban Development Authority (UUDA), Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), Department of Tourism, and the Manna Palla Development Committee. The enchanting 60-acre Mannu Palla Lake is surrounded by 40 acres of land which will be developed. What adds beauty to the lake is a small half-acre island built in its centre.

Though many plans were earlier made to develop this lake, they served limited purposes. CMC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak told The Hindu on Monday that the master plan aimed at comprehensive development of the lake and its surroundings in a phased manner. The CMC was constructing a playground on 4.5 acres of land with a pavilion near the lake at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. Drains were also being constructed around the lake. A three-km jogging track would be built around the lake. Besides joggers, the track would also help those going on morning and evening walks. An Ayurveda garden would also be raised near the lake, he said.

A major sapling-plantation drive would be taken up around the lake. There were many acacia trees around the lake now. They would be replaced with local tree species. The aim was to enhance green cover in the area. Saplings would also be grown on half-acre island. “We want to attract birds to this small island. We will consult environmentalists on this issue,” Mr. Nayak said.

As it was not possible to enjoy a boat ride in the sea during monsoon, the CMC wanted to encourage boat ride in this lake.

Hence, a platform would be constructed at the lake from where people could get into the boats. Pedal and medium-sized boats would be introduced. A boat ride during monsoon would give a different experience to the people, he said.

An approach road from Dr. T.M.A. Planetarium side, three entry points to the lake and entry arches too would be constructed. Besides, the local people, the lake could also attract students from the Manipal University.

A restaurant would start functioning near the lake shortly. A zone to park vehicles was being constructed near the lake, he said.

Temple Town to get Flower Auction Center

Quote:
* It will be the second in Karnataka after Davangere
* The centre will have jurisdiction over Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Udupi
* Union Government has allocated Rs. 2.5 crore for the project

The temple town of Udupi is all set to emerge as a major floriculture hub with a flower auction centre expected to come up here by the end of January. It Will be the second such centre in the State.

Though the centre will be located here, it will have jurisdiction over Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga and Chikmagalur, besides Udupi.

Udupi is among the four places to get a flower auction centre in the first phase. The first one came up in Davangere. Two others would be set up in Belgaum and Sirsi (Uttara Kannada).

The building will be constructed on 2.5 acres of land in Shivally here. As many as 16 stalls and a cold storage would come up on the ground floor while the first floor will house an office and two guest houses.

The centre is coming up under the National Agriculture Development Programme (NADP) of the Union Government.

According to Assistant Director of Horticulture (State Sector) Guruprasad, the Union Government had allocated Rs. 2.5 crore for the centre, of which Rs. 1.86 crore had been released.

The main objective of the centre is to provide a good price for flowers grown by farmers, better marketing facilities, elimination of middlemen, and to give a fillip to floriculture. According to A.B. Sanjay, Senior Assistant Director at the Department of Horticulture, the cold storage facility would enable farmers to sell their flowers when the prices are high.

Jasmine, chrysanthemum, orchid, anthurium, heliconia, bird of paradise and dahlia were being cultivated on 256 hectares in Udupi district, yielding 1,790 tonnes of flowers. The annual turnover from these flowers was estimated at Rs. 5.21 crore.

Jasmine (Udupi mallige or Shankarapura Mallige) growers in the district are likely to be the major beneficiaries of the project. The ‘Udupi mallige' enjoys the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

According to Mr. Guruprasad, there are over 5,000 jasmine growers in the district. The department had been instrumental in the formation of the Jasmine Growers' Association here. It had 220 growers on its rolls and the number was expected to go up.

“Flower growers from the other three districts and private growers too will be able to avail themselves of the benefits of this centre,” he said.

Cautious welcome

However, president of Jasmine Growers' Association Bantakallu Ramakrishna Sharma was cautious in welcoming the centre. He said the present marketing system was excellent. Flowers were collected from the houses of growers and they were getting a good price. Payment too was prompt.

“If the auction centre provides something better than this, we will welcome it. So far, we have no idea how things will work at the centre,” he said.

According to Mr. Sharma, there are nearly 10,000 jasmine growers in the district.
