I'm not an admin, but anyway: the headline of the thread is "New World Centre". I think since a few days we are unfortunately far away from that topic. Its more ageneral discussion about developments of water fronts - not only in Hongkong

That beach is clearly fake and not very pretty. The trees have been planted, are stunted, and not very healthy. The buildings in the background are typical of Dubai, i.e. fugly. Take a look at Tai Long Wan and weep:

KPF is considered very commercial, though of generally high quality. If you're referring to ICC, I rather like it. The great architects in my opinion are Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, Santiago Calatrava, Herzog & de Meuron. They're the Pritzker Prize-winning stars of the architectural firmament. I would agree that not all of their buildings succeed, but most do, and in general they deserve their starchitect status.

I've climbed Hong Kong's highest hills and viewed its most celebrated vantage points, and personally I think the views from Lion Rock, Lugard Road, Jardine's Lookout, etc, are far more impressive than any view from anywhere in Dubai. Lion Rock for instance:

The residential towers you mention may be functional, but I like their clean white outlines against the lush green foliage of the hills. If only Dubai had green foliage, or hills, or real islands...

Surely it was 'finance' that built Hong Kong's iconic towers two decades ago, such as Bank of China and HSBC?

Since then Hong Kong has added towers like the supremely elegant IFC2, ICC, One Island East, pretty new airport terminals (makes Dubai's look tacky with its plastic palm trees), magnificent bridges like the Stonecutters Bridge and the new bridge to Macau, Frank Gehry's Opus building, Zaha Hadid's Innovation Building, Herzog & de Meuron's new M+ Museum (currently UC), and finally this spectacular high speed rail terminal, which promises to be one of the finest railway stations ever built.

Contrast that with the utterly vile Al Yaqoub Tower or vulgar Rose Rotana, Emirates Park Towers, Elite Residence. Ugh!! With the odd exception, I don't see much architectural beauty in Dubai. It's an orgy of bad taste.

Perhaps I shouldn't be too down on the place. I like the Burj Al Arab (at least the exterior), Burj Khalifa, the musical fountains, and I dare say expat life has some fun moments like dune buggying in the desert. However I think I'd get bored of the malls, the dust, and artifice of it all, and as an overall city I'd choose Hong Kong over Dubai any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Not impressed at all.. Like really NOT IMPRESSED.

being from the caribeans, a beach without Palm trees is not really exciting or lack some of the beauty...I saw many people being impressed by this beach but for me it's an ok beach.

I much prefer that one in Dubai

Tai Long Wan is a pretty beach by Caribbean or any standards. White sandy bays - indeed several of them in a row - few sunbathers, and lush green steep hills all around. It certainly pisses all over that fake beach in Dubai you posted. Beaches don't need palm trees to be pretty, unless you're telling me places like this are lacking somehow?

Anyway wondering off topic here. I personally think this tower is a missed opportunity, but it's not ugly.

you have clearly never set a foot in the Caribeans Islands...

That picture of Beach in Greece in Greece in indeed gorgeous. But I insist that Tai Long Wan is an OK beach...isn't it next to Sai Kun Town ? I was there last week but stayed at the promenade...I would NOT kill mom and Dad to see that beach but maybe next time i'm there i'll visit it

While the building is no masterpiece, the cladding seems to be of very high quality, and the crown has a certain lightness and transparency that cannot really be captured in photos. Having said that, here is a barrage of photos I took today:

And it cannot be denied that this tower balances out the Kowloon skyline somewhat:

I think it's not too bad. The shape is a bit weird but I like it. It fits well in Hong Kong.

The extension to Ocean Terminal is also visible.
