Strain on Madurai-Virudhunagar single line

S. SUNDAR
Southern Railway authorities must also give importance to track doubling work south of Madurai

The broad gauge railway section between Madurai and Virudhunagar is craving for a double line. The focus of Southern Railway, so far, has been only to provide a double line between Chennai and Madurai and not beyond that.

As part of the project, Madurai-Dindigul section has already been doubled. The officials have opted for taking up the critical patches on Villupuram-Tiruchi section and the work between Valadi and Ariyalur railway stations is under way.

Over-utilised

“If the 44-km stretch between Madurai and Virudhunagar is not going to be doubled, introduction of new services beyond Madurai, even on completion of the on-going doubling project between Chennai and Madurai, will become a problem,” a senior railway officer said.

This stretch caters to three railway sections — Vanichi Maniyachi-Tirunelveli; Vanchi Maniyachi-Tuticorin; and Virudhunagar-Shencottah. All the trains going south of Madurai pass through this section. “Many express, passenger, and goods trains are operated on these three sections, making Madurai-Virudhunagar section an over-utilised one,” the official said.

Twin problem

Railway officials face the twin problem of strain on the tracks and difficultly in finding time for maintenance. Though the worn-out tracks were replaced in phases, an express train did derail near Sattur a few months back following a rail fracture. Restoration of track takes considerable time and it affects punctuality of trains.

That Chennai-Nagercoil section is the highest revenue generating section in Southern Railway on the passenger earnings front only indicates the tremendous scope and huge demand for operating new trains from the southern districts.

Demand for trains

The demands would only be renewed soon as few important rail projects were in advanced stages of completion.

In the next few months, Karur-Namakkal-Salem new broad gauge line would be ready. Similar is the case with Dindigul-Palani gauge conversion work. Passengers will demand additional train service between Tuticorin and Bangalore; new train between Shencottah and Coimbatore; and Shencottah and Bangalore.

“On meeting these demands, the Virudhunagar-Madurai section would be further choked,” the official said.

The Virudhunagar-Manamadurai section, on completion of gauge conversion work, could provide an alternative route to Virudhunagar-Madurai section, he added.

So, the Madurai - Tirunelveli - Kanyakumari and Madurai - Tuticorin line must be doubled to solve all the problem.
will sr consider this?

most of the buildings in Karur along the bye-pass and railway station looks to be brand new. This shows the town is progressing well in developments.

Even Namakkal town started to boom in commercial activity like Karur.

Salem-Namakkal-Karur line would be catalyst for further development of this corridor! But deaf railways will take another 5yrs to commission this!

Not all brand new.You can visibly seen the major make-shift along the Kovai Road. Also, more and more expansions are happening along the Dindigul Road (NH-7).This will again go along the new bypass along the NH-67 bypass.Already some developments can be seen there too.

Apart from that our ministers are not pressurizing them to get what TN people deserve.
We should learn from our neighbouring state people.

Early once we get 1 or 2 trains to Chennai, For Chennai people and RoI, they think Chennai = TN.
someone should take a survey on people arriving chennai from places such and Mumbai/Delhi/Hyderbad and from other metros
1. % of people whose actual destination is chennai itself
2. % of people proceeding towards Madurai/Tirunelveli/Nagercoil and furhter
3. % of people proceeding towards Salem/ Erode / Coimbatre and further

I also travelled towards chennai from other cities in trains. rarely i found someone sitting near me has his actual destination as chennai.
It is a must railways in Tamil Nadu to stop thinking "Chennai = Tamil Nadu" and extend important trains to actual destinations where people travels.

New train to link Chennai, Mannargudi

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/new-train...57-60-120.html

An overnight daily train connecting Chennai Egmore and Mannargudi will be introduced soon, said DMK Parliamentary Party Leader T R Baalu in a statement on Saturday.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting Baalu had with Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal.

The newly laid 12 km-long railway line between Needamangalam and Mannargudi would be commissioned expeditiously and the train to Chennai Egmore introduced soon. The progress of track doubling work between Chengalpattu and Dindigul had been reviewed and 20 km of the 107 km-railway track between Chengalpattu and Villupuram would be doubled by end of 2011, while the 50 km stretch on the Villupuram-Dindigul sector would be ready by December 2012. The `800 crore new railway line project between Avadi — Sriperumpudur — Guduvancherry has been sent to State government for cost sharing.

If balu does the following it will be a big gift for Delta TN.

1. 22 coach Mannai express to Mannargudi via Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayavaram
2. Restoring Rock Fort exp exclusive Trichy
3. 22 coach Kamban express to Karaikal via Nagore, Nagai, Thiruvarur, Mayavaram
4. Another 22 coach Thanjai exp to Trichy via Mainline for night.

This will surely fullfil atleast 25% of demand from Delta region.
