Is Sao Paulo-Rio completely motorway these days? It seems like there is a stretch near the state border that isn't according to a map I see online, but it doesn't seem possible that two such large and important cities would not be completely connected by motorways?

Thanks!!!

The stretch between SP city and Sorocaba (of which this video is part) has much traffic. The road is more peaceful after Sorocaba city.

Does anyone have a map of the Brazilian highway system? More specifically, a map of all the expressways? I have looked on Google, but haven't found one, and the ones I do find show all the highways. Anyways, your highways are impressive!

I have one at home. There are quite some expressways in Brazil, especially in the southeastern part. All major cities have some expressways, but in the heavily populated area from the south along the coast and inland are also a lot of intercity expressways.

the Brazilian highways aren't the best...
but some of them are pretty good...

the most beautifull is Serra do Rio do Rastro (Santa Catarina State) that sometimes can have snow fall there...
Dona Francisca is very beautifull too...

Random pictures from Google Earth

I made a search in GE for photos. A lot of work here guys, comments are welcome!!

SP-065 D.Pedro I - Links Campinas (SP-330) to Jacareí (BR-116 and SP-070, main São Paulo-Rio de Janeiro links)

Junction with Campinas South Ring

SP-348 Bandeirantes - Begins in São Paulo and goes north towards Campinas and Limeira, ends at SP-330 Anhangüera

SP-330 Anhangüera - Begins in São Paulo, runs north parallel to Bandeirantes, but goes 450 km further until Minas Gerais state, wher it turns BR-050.

BR-376 Curitiba-PR to Joinville-SC Southern Brazil.

Lots of accidents on this road, cut the mountains with some sharp curves.

SP-150 Anchieta - one of the two roads linking SP to the littoral and coastal cities, including Santos where is the biggest and most important seaport of the country.

It was the first double carriageway of the country (1930-40). On the mountains section, very sharp curves reduces the speed limit to 60km/h.

Later a new modern motorway were built parallel to it. (Imigrantes)

SP Metro

Serra do Mar (Coast Range)

The old Anchieta and the new Imigrantes (background).

SP-160 Imigrantes - runs parallel to Anchieta, but it's newer and more modern. Instead of sharp curves, dozens of bridges and tunnels cutting through the mountains.

in this photo, still near SP, you can see the works for a section of the 170km long ring road.

The motorway was built in two phases. The first at the end of the 70's is now the northbound. The newest was completed only in 2001 and is much more modern, is now the southbound. Due environment concerns, much more stricter now than in 70's, you have 70% of the mountains section on tunnels, rather than in bridges as the older one. You also can note less bridge pillars on the new section. That was possible due new technologies and resulted on much less trees to be cut!

Here is the road near the coast, ready to climb these mountains toward São Paulo.

SP-055 Main SP coastal road

Junction with SP-160 (Imigrantes)

BR-101 Rio-Niterói bridge

Rush Hour

Arriving in Niterói

Toll Plaza

Arriving in Rio de Janeiro

SP-310 Washington Luis - Links SP-330 and 340 to S.J. do Rio Preto

BR-040 near Itaipava-RJ - Links Rio de Janeiro to Brasília.

Very beautiful scenary, shame I didn't find more photos.

SP-300 Marechal Rondon - Cross west of São Paulo state until the border with Mato Grosso do Sul state.

Very boring to drive here, 400km without curves, take some CDs with you!

Endless sugar cane fields.

RJ-071 Linha Vermelha (Red Line).

Urban highway, it's works as a semi ring-road of Rio de Janeiro, very heavy traffic. This month begins the works of the new 145km Rio ring-road. You can see an interesting film about the project here.

Junction with BR-116 (Rio-SP highway)

SP-340 Adhemar de Barros. Links Campinas region to northeast SP state, near the border with Minas Gerais state.

SP-280 Castelo Branco - Begins in São Paulo and runs through the southwestern state.

It's a very important link to São Paulo newest suburbs.

SP-070 Carvalho Pinto - Runs Parallel to BR-116 Dutra highway towards Rio de Janeiro. Merges with Dutra near Taubaté, 130km further.

Service Station

SP-127 Santos-Dummont. Links Campinas to SP-280.

Access to Viracopos Int'l Airport (Campinas), which the government has plans to upgrade to be the main SP airport and the biggest in Latin America, though it's more than 100km from the capital!!

SP-021 Rodoanel (SP Ring Road)

It has only 32km yet (West Section). More 70km are under construction and will be ready in 2010 (Southern Section). East and North sections, only god knows by now when will be completed.

Police escorting football fans outside the city!

On clear days you can see Rio Metropolian Area and Guanabara bay, even Sugal Loaf!! But this was not one of these days...

The road climbing the mountains.

That's like a whole-day work, mcuri! Thanks for posting the photos (also Positronn and Bruno_BL); I'd expect not so good highways, but actually they look very well. Good job, Brazil!
