Are they going to reconstruct BR-381 / SP-010 north of São Paulo as well? It looks substandard on Google Earth.

@xrtn2, this map you posted is wrong. For instance the full length Brasilia-Goiânia-Itumbiara-Uberlândia-São Paulo is already operating as dual carriageway.

It was widened in-situ on a 1950s alignment. There are no plans to realign it. It crosses a highly sensitive environmental area (Serra da Cantareira), a mountain ridge north of Sao Paulo metro, reaching the summit of the traverse on these tunnels.

If you look with attention on the terrain, the only viable options are longer tunnels with portals at lower altitudes.

A tunnel at altitude 780-820m would be 6.5km long and would take out all those nasty 60km/h curves. It would be expensive.

Actually, the speeed limit there is 80km/h for cars. It's not pretty good, but it's still better than most "Serras" we found across the country (even in duplicated highways). I think it only makes sense to build a new alignment if the entire Fernão Dias Highway, or at least a good part of it, were rebuilt too. This particular stretch could be built mainly with elevated tracks until ~900m, where a 2km tunnel could cross the mountain range.
