Rectification + widening + 4,8km road tunnel project

There is a very interesting ongoing project (groundbreaking expected to sometime next semester) in Brazil: rectification and widening of BR-040, Duque de Caxias - Petrópolis sector (look here).

As you can see, the highway divides in two to climb a 950m mountain ridge. Today, we have a situation of divided lanes. The older alignment (2 lanes), more tight and full of curves, was built in the late 30's and carries northbound (uphill) traffic. Later, a newer, straighter alignment (also 2 lanes) was built and today carries southbound (downhill) traffic.

This situation cannot be sustained. The uphill lanes have many local accesses and are unfit for ever-growing traffic. Therefore, they decided do twin the lanes of the (present) downhill lanes and, for the final climb, build a 4,8km road tunnel. The video below has a very interesting plotting of the new highway over the present downhill lanes (and includes, towards the end, some local roads improvements and interchange reconstructions too, hence the roundabouts and so).

The whole project concerns a privately administrated road and the widening/modernization was required on the tender of that highway in 1997.

The video is in Portuguese, but if you watch side-by-side with Google Maps, you will be able to spot the places.

It will improove a lot the Rio de Janeiro-Juiz de Fora part. But I still think there are many curves that could be eliminated with the techniques used in Imigrantes before the tunnel.

I do Juiz de Fora-Rio de Janeiro-Juiz de Fora often, this is better than nothing. The tolls are being increased every year, it is in the concession contract along with this new road.

I also realized that many curves won't be realligned. How much will this intervention cost? And when will it be ready?
