As you can see on the last pics, even the new widened roads keeps unsafe elements like median u-turns, sharp curves and no access control.
While excessively sharp curves are annoying, quite honestly it's the access control that really needs working on. Otherwise it becomes a road with street-like characteristics (or possibly a street with road-like characteristics), that weird bastard that is neither handsome nor interesting nor fun to drive. By the way, even U.S. Interstates have median U-Turns (for emergency vehicles).

Ok, I know there are some exceptions for these unsafe elements in the Interstate System. The bothering part in the duplicated federal brazilian highways is that U-turns are quite common in order to save just a few money (compared to the whole work), and they are there for the convenience of the real estate on the edge of the highway.

Take a look in this road http://maps.google.com.br/?ll=-27.25...k&z=15&vpsrc=6 going south, you will see 4 U-turns in a matter of 12km. With access control, the need for the U-turns decreases, and more important, the shelf life of the highway increases significantly.

Emergency U-Turns occur only where medians are widest...but they are hardly as common as those in Brazil. But like I said, it all stems from access control. Get that right, and everything else follows.

Dear Brazilian friends.

Would it be please possible to add some more information for the roads shown in your amazing pictures? At least just a reference to road numbers would be helpful.
