Isn't the first photo just an overtaking lane? That's fairly common in many countries, where a 1+1 road gets an extra lane on hills in the uphill direction so that slow vehicles don't hold the traffic up too much.

I'm not talking about that stretch. Unfortunately, our friend xrtn2 upload the pics altogether so we can't easily detach them. I'm talking about the stretch with a median, one lane in one direction and two lanes in the opposite direction. That isn't that common.

Not every place in Brazil has "Sao Paulo standards" of road engineering, though

BR-230 - the infamous Transamazonian "Highway"

It is undergoing paving, though

Quote:

Right but 95 % of brazilian roads are good conditions, this road is so famous in Brazil because bad quality everybody knows, this road need 60 years to be completed.

Sure, I just wanted to bring some diversity to this thread, I also found out the Amazonian part is being slowly paved. I had never seen the Paraíba part, though. Thanks for sharing.

110km/h? Finally. I have never understood why the speed limit there was so low. And still is.

Great, I hadn't heart they finally signed it... I just read they expect 36 months of construction, i.e. official opening scheduled for late 2014.

Do you have any images of the construction of the East section?
