I was reading an article about the new stadium of Manaus, a city in the Amazon rainforest that will host some matches of the 2014 World Football Cup.
They said: "Stuff arrives by boat there aren't roads suitable to big trucks that connect the city with the rest of Brazil. "
Is it true?

Yes.

This sector (http://goo.gl/maps/au0Ma) is still under construction. It is presently a bit more than a dirt track. Some natives and environmentalists fight against the completion of the road. Should be done in 3 years I think.

Other than that, there is no other road link to the rest of the country from Manaus (though it is connected by paved roads with Venezuela).

After the duplication works, this is an interesting road to go under concession. The private partner could be in charge of duplication between Fortaleza and Teresina (more 550 km). Today, these roads have a lighter traffic than the roads in central and southern Brasil, mainly because the motorization rate in northeastern is low. But it will change in the next 10-20 years dramatically.

BR-376 UPDATE Parana state

Brazil to Auction Five Highway Concessions This Year -- Rousseff

By Gerald Jeffris

BRASILIA--Brazil's government plans to auction at least five new highway concessions in 2014 as part of a continuing effort to overhaul the country's fragile infrastructure, President Dilma Rousseff said Friday.

Speaking at a ceremony for the signature of a recently auctioned concession contract, the president said the new concessions would improve the country's efficiency.

"These are important to increase the competitiveness of the Brazilian economy," she said.

Among the concessions to be auctioned this year will be the Rio-Niteroi bridge in Rio de Janeiro state; the BR163 and BR364 highways in Mato Grosso, Para and Goias; the BR364 highway in Minas Gerais and Goias; and the BR476 in Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

The announcement of the new concessions comes after Brazil in 2013 successfully auctioned concessions on five other highway projects, as well as on a group of major airports.

Responding to criticisms that recent government models for concessions didn't allow for sufficient private sector returns, Ms. Rousseff Friday said the concessions would be made in consideration with private sector interests.

"We want strong companies with profits absolutely guaranteed, as long it's a profit made fairly and in contribution to the country," she said.

Speaking in a press conference following the announcement, Brazilian transportation minister Cesar Borges said the new highway concessions this year would overhaul 2,282 kilometers of federal highway and promote new investments of up to 17.8 billion reais ($7.4 billion).
