BMW could set up East Coast distribution center at Port of Baltimore
BMW of North America LLC is considering Baltimore among a handful of ports for a regional distribution center servicing the East Coast, in spite of declining auto imports nationally.
If it chooses Baltimore, BMW could roll as many as 70,000 cars through the port’s docks each year. Maryland Port Administration Executive Director James J. White said his agency could set aside land near the Dundalk Marine Terminal to accommodate the German luxury car maker, which is seeking as much as 40 acres. BMW spokesman Jan Ehlen said the company is looking at potential locations in Baltimore, among other port cities, but has made no decisions whether to undertake the project or where. |

A Miami Herald article written about 6 months to a year ago stated that at that time there were about 40,000-50,000 vacant units with another approximately 50,000 under construction that were not under any form of contract. It's hard to say what the exact number is today. Recent estimates predict that 25% of homes in South Florida will be in some stage of foreclosure in the next year or so. Combine that with the 85,000 jobs the city has lost thus far (third most in the country behind NY and LA), and it's not a pretty picture. But, Miami has a lot of backers who really believe in the city and there are a lot people here who think big (the city just published a plan yesterday for building a more urban downtown, I'll see if I can find the article online). I think Miami will bounce back quicker than most projections and I think the city will be better off for having over-built. Time will tell though. Steven, you mentioned a few days ago that we should be hearing something on the Mechanic Theatre proposal in the near future. What is the news supposed to regard? Any idea? |

I am thinking it was about "official design" submissions or something. Not sure where I put that e-mail at.
But, like everything else, it as well as other projects will probably take longer to release anything new to the public. Who knows?

Wonder how much longer The Sun will last...?
Baltimore Sun to End Weekday Delivery in Four Counties
Baltimore -- With parent Tribune in the midst of bankruptcy, the cost-conscious Baltimore Sun has suspended its weekday home delivery to customers in Frederick, Garrett, Montgomery and Prince George's counties, The Baltimore Business Journal reported. The paper reportedly will continue home delivery on Sundays, and continue to stock retail outlets in the areas, which it considers outside of its core market of Baltimore and the immediate surrounding counties. The news comes a week after The Sun's three-year-old competitor, The Examiner, announced plans to close in mid-Feb. And in December, The Sun and Washington Post announced a first-of-its-kind content-sharing agreement, helping to cut costs as both papers suffer from dwindling ad sales and circulation. |

On a development note,
The retail portion of the Southwestern broom company building, in Brewers Hill, is ready and waiting on tenants. I did not see any signs up so I'm guessing nobody is lined up to occupy any of those spaces, yet.

Speaking of Harbor East, I was there tonight to see The Wrestler (wow!) and the area was busier than any Friday I can recall. The Landmark was jammed (seriously cheek-to-jowl) with young females who wanted to see the "He's Just Not Into You" or whatever it's called, which apparently was filmed mainly in photogenic parts of Charm City. |

It's strange to think this is Baltimore because it's an entire skyline, but not the main one! Isn't it great? Do do you guys remember way back in the day when there was only one skyline?

Something to look forward to:
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/c...,6438929.story Baltimore to host lacrosse final four in 2010, 2011 NCAA men's lacrosse final four to return to Baltimore in 2010, 2011 By Childs Walker | childs.walker@baltsun.com February 7, 2009 The NCAA men's lacrosse final four will return to Baltimore in 2010 and 2011, tournament officials announced yesterday. "Every year we've had it in Baltimore, we've set an attendance record," said Ravens president Dick Cass, who helped spearhead efforts to bring the tournament back to town. "So we have a real track record with this event." NCAA officials cited that track record in explaining their selection. "It's a very strong lacrosse area in terms of spectators and in terms of people participating in the sport," said Joni Comstock, NCAA senior vice president of championships. "It's always a very highly attended event, and the city of Baltimore and the stadium put together a very strong financial package for us." Baltimore last hosted at M&T Bank Stadium in 2007, drawing a then-record 123,215 announced fans to the three-day event, which includes the Division I final and semifinals and the Division II and III finals. Baltimore also hosted the event in 2003 and 2004. Cass was thrilled to get the tournament, held Memorial Day weekend, for two straight years because it "really helps build momentum into the second year." Baltimore competed with Boston, Denver and the Meadowlands in New Jersey for the 2010-2012 tournament bids. Though local leaders hoped to win the tournament for all three years, they never believed that was likely. The NCAA selection committee has opted to spread the event around in recent years, hoping to build a lacrosse audience up and down the East Coast, where most power programs play. Though the tournament has drawn well in less-traditional lacrosse markets such as Philadelphia (which hosted in 2005 and 2006) and Boston (which hosted last year and will again this May and in 2012), city officials said it was time to bring the event back to Baltimore - in many ways the cradle of the sport. "Baltimore is a natural pick for the national championships," Mayor Sheila Dixon said in a statement. "In addition to being the home of the best crab cakes in the world, Baltimore is the home of lacrosse in the United States." With six perennial tournament contenders, dozens of elite high school and recreational programs and the sport's Hall of Fame all in close proximity, Baltimore boasts an unmatched connection with lacrosse. In their pitch to the NCAA, representatives of the Ravens and the Maryland Stadium Authority touted that rich lacrosse tradition and the plethora of hotels, restaurants and shops within walking distance of the stadium. "Fans can literally park their cars for the weekend and walk around the city," Cass said. City officials have estimated the 2007 event delivered $15million in economic impact. As the chief tenants of M&T Bank Stadium, the Ravens put up a guaranteed fee to the NCAA to attract the event. The amount was undisclosed. Any revenue from ticket sales and concessions beyond that guaranteed sum would be split by the Ravens, Maryland Stadium Authority and NCAA. But the Ravens do not view the event as a major revenue opportunity, Cass said. "We're a state-owned facility, and this is a great event for the city and state, so it's kind of a payback," he said. The Ravens and the stadium authority hope to use their largest venue for more concerts and sporting events during the seven-month NFL offseason. Authority Chairman John Morton called the lacrosse tournament a first payoff for the state's greater push to market its facilities. |

By that time the dollar will be so depreciated that you won't ,not only, be able to buy the PH but you won't even make month's end at the Charles Tower.
