Yeah, that's pretty much the main reason this was to be built - as a sort of cold war response to a South Korean company having built the world's tallest hotel (in Singapore). Of coure Dubai probably has an even bigger one now...

Tell me when will it open, please? I would like to book a tour to North Korea and stay in the hotel for one or two nights.

I'm not sure if tourists in NK actually get to pick their hotel. Probably not...

It is an interesting question.
Will it "open" at all? In order to be "open", all must be working. Water, sewer, electrical, fire safety, elevators, lighting, heat and air-conditioning....etc.

There are many of us who still think the building was covered to make it look good on the outside, and that is it. It was embarassing, now it isn't. Will they spend the money to be able to show and use the inside? Only time will tell.

^
I imagine in the small chance they do decorate the inside they would only do select floors... Like the lobby, first few floors and the tops floors.

^ I considered the exact same thing. They probably will leave most of the floors without any furniture or even facilities/electricity/water and only do some for representational purposes.

Ridiculous. But that'd say virtually everything about this "Democratic Republic".

They prolly used the building for their own dignitaries / VIPs. Or used it for their allies such as China's Politburo leaders Or big Chinese investors. Anyway, that's a great place to stay if NK wants to lure investors from abroad.

I got curious and wanted to find this building in Google Earth, and to my surprise, the image is quite recent.

As you can tell, at least 2 of the 3 sides are nearly fully cladded:

Despite my personal feelings on North Korea, I have long been a fan of this building. I first heard about it by reading an old Alamanac in the mid 90s with a photo of the unfinished skyscraper. It was in an article on tall buildings and it said that the tower was going to be the tallest hotel but has stopped construction. Now 16 years later it's nearing completion! It looks so futuristic, especially since it rises from a large low-rise area.

thecityofgold hit the nail right on the head - it looks almost inspired by the 1960s "googie" architecture - think the Jetsons.

I've always thought of this tower, along with the al-Bait Clock Tower in Mecca, as the two skyscrapers I will definitely never get to visit in my lifetime.

One of the most beautiful skyscraper that I've seen in a while. Very original design too.

many experts think that Korea may be reunited by 2050. so its not that unlikely that one day pyongyang is possible to visit.

Good call! That possibility slipped my mind. Well the al-Bait is more difficult then, considering I'm not Muslim!
