North Korea plans to partially open landmark hotel next year - Yonhap

LENGTH: 189 words

Text of report in English by South Korean news agency Yonhap

Seoul, 4 October: North Korea plans to partially open a landmark hotel next April to mark the centennial of the birth of Kim Il-sung, the country's late founder, a source said today.

The move comes as the North is working on the interiors of the 105-story Ryukyong Hotel, which has stood unfinished in downtown Pyongyang for nearly 20 years due to a lack of capital.

In 2008, the North resumed construction of the skyscraper with financing from Egypt's Orascom Telecom, the operator of a mobile phone network in the isolated communist country.

The North plans to open from the basement to the 25th floor of the hotel mainly for offices, restaurants, gymnasiums and bars on 15 April, Kim's centennial birthday, the source said.

The Pyongyang offices of international agencies and European companies are expected to move into the new building.

The North is struggling to achieve its stated goal of building a prosperous nation next year, the centennial of the birth of Kim Il-sung, the father of current leader Kim Jong-il.

Fantastic news. Hope some of the guys on this forum can go and take pictures of the interior. Obviously means that this building is not just a propaganda tool with nothing inside.

Pretty sad to see the money wasted on a despot's ego while his people starve to death.

North Korea's 'Hotel of Doom' to open 24 years after construction

Now, 24 years after it was first started, the hotel which once aimed to be the world's tallest tower will finally open its doors in the North Korean capital.

Ryugyong Hotel, a glass tower spanning 105 storeys and rising 1,080ft high, will partially open in April next year following decades of delays, according to reports.

The long-delayed opening will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the nation's founder Kim Il-sung, with celebrations peaking on 15 April.

It was in 1987 that the hotel – whose name means Capital of Willows – was first launched with the grandiose ambitions of creating the world's tallest tower.

However, construction ground to a halt in 1993, due to lack of funds following the collapse of the Soviet Union, economic mismanagement and natural disasters.

And there's this:

Gawker

World’s Most Notoriously Unfinished Hotel Finally Opening (Supposedly)

A big, tentative congrats to North Korea, whose infamous Ryugyong Hotel (aka the "Hotel of Doom") is slated to open its doors in April 2012—only 24 years after its groundbreaking, and just in time for the 100th birthday celebration of O.G. Most Glorious Leader on High Kim Il-sung. Sadly, he won't be doing the ribbon-cutting because he died in 1994. But his ghost is expected to haunt and place bugs in some of the rooms.

At 105 stories, Ryugyong was once supposed to be the world's tallest tower. However, "[t]he collapse of the Soviet Union, economic mismanagement and natural disasters," plus food shortages ("national diets"), all delayed its completion, the Telegraph reminds us. At times the Ryugyong was more a symbol of shame than one of pride. But an Egyptian outfit got involved three years ago and made completion possible. Soon Pyongyang will become the world's top tourist destination, because everyone will want to enjoy the Ryugyong's amenities. Everyone except South Korean activists, because of the poison needle attacks.

People by millions in NK are starving to death while KJI wants to finish this hotel for the 100th birthday for his father who died more than a decade ago. Stupidity is the best word that I can use to describe the NK regime.

This is by no means the only building under construction in Pyongyang:

well, haters may not deny. the building looks somehow unique and even stylish ok, I dislike the regime, but this is about height and architecture.

Well I'm definitely no fan of the NK regime, but I like this tower anyway. Is that really a problem?
