China probably donated the fireworks as a present for the special occasion or something.

I don't think they would spend the money on this them selves.

C'mon people. North Korea does mass celebrations. Its one of the things they do. They do it on Kim Senior's birthday, they do it on Kim Junior's day, they do it on May Day, they do it on Army Day, they do it on the anniversary of the founding of the party, they do it on the anniversary of the 'revolution' and probably dozens more. Google 'mass games'.

I don't think he is, i've heard it before, supposedly there are severe structual problems, so they might renovate only a few floors in the building (lobby and one of the top floors) to save money.
That is entirely and only speculation. No independent surveyor has been anywhere near the building.

Seriously, if that happened, I would not find it hard to believe at all. Sadly, it's quite possible...

am astounded by the speed of the construction, especially considering its beeing standing idle for years.

to be honest - it isn't THAT bad after it's been covered with glass - there are ENDLESS amounts of more uglier buildings than this one in the world

Can't be true... Even the officials of the DPRK can't be that stupid...

I bet that when it's finished the only difference will be that it will have a facade instead of being just an empty concrete shell.

I laugh if the building collapses just the second it is finished.

Of course, this building isn't the only tall concrete tower that North Korea has built. The Kwangbok street apartments were built at about the same time (and finished) and while they are inhabited apartments I haven't heard anything about structural problems in the various travelogues (now quite common) that have visited North Korea.

Also, they have a couple of large hotels at the moment, both tall, built in the eighties/early nineties...

Yanggakdo Hotel (Luxury hotel, on its own island, where most foreigners stay.)

Koryo Hotel.

I also noticed the same trollish tendencies in this otherwise interesting thread on the size of the May Day Stadium - http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=849900

actually, ryugyong might eventually need wires coming out the sides and sucking out the city's electricity just to support itself.

They have some interesting skyscrapers over there... almost as interesting as their government... this hotel sure is ugly but I still think it's awesome.
