Regardless of our collective/independent feelings for the design of this tower and the running of the North Korean government in general, we should probably keep the discussion at least slightly civil so that this thread isn't locked. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how far it strays from your own.

However, this tower with cladding looks to me like something out of an old 1980's scifi flick. Not necessarily a bad thing; a little kitsch, but that never did anyone any harm. It does look the top should hold the throne of an evil futuristic dictator, though.

The registration exists in many EE countries though, many of them are in the EU already but kept that relict of the past in their laws. Obviously not all of them will jail you but there will be a hefty fine when you leave.

Recently only once met the registration obligatory - in Belorussia - I was there in April this year. But Belorussia is not in EU, it is a different world.
Sure, then that paper I had to fill in Czech R. was a product of my imagination...

Will this actually be the world's largest hotel in terms of floor area? It's a lot wider than the taller hotels in Dubai...

Looks so damn MASSIVE! Does anyone know how many hotel rooms were they originally planning there? Was it going to be a hotel for foreigners or for locals?

Actually I was asking about their original plans back in late 80's .Their current plans are pretty obious - finishing exterior so it would not be such an eyesore in Pyongyang.

3,000 rooms, probably even more.

Wikipedia says this about the origins of the tower:

"The building's plan for a 105-story height was reportedly a Cold War response to the completion of the Westin Stamford Hotel in Singapore the previous year by a South Korean company, SsangYong Group. North Korean leadership envisioned the project as a channel for Western investors to step into the marketplace. A firm, the Ryugyong Hotel Investment and Management Co., was established to attract a hoped-for US$230 million in foreign investment. A representative for the North Korean government promised relaxed oversight, saying, "The foreign investors can even operate casinos, nightclubs or Japanese lounges if they want to.""

So I guess they wanted to break into the (Western) foreign market, not just as a hotel but in a more wider economic sense. Probably as a reaction to the economic reforms in China, but this hotel was still also a born out of the rivalry with South Korea.

So if the hotel was finished with the foreign investors it would've been used by foreigners. If the hotel was finished without a change of economics (like the economy now without the hotel) they probably would have used it for locals from outside Pyongyang visiting the capital for those "mass games" they stage or for big political meetings.

And right now for all we know it's just going to be a communications tower camouflaged as a skyscraper.

Nothing is obvious about its current plans... well the whole project isn't obvious actually. We know nothing about it and so far a lot of unexpected things happened, like restarting contruction.

Expect the unexpected with this one! Pretty exciting actually.
