The elite get apartments for free, but I don't know how hotels would work there for them. If Kempinski comes back they will definitely be high-quality and therefore expensive.

The last photo is gorgeous

based on the horizon which is half the height of Ryugyong, it should be around 150m in height, which also coincide with Yongkakdo International Hotel's height from the exact angle.

that's just my guess. the flame shouldn't be there though

IIRC there was a statement by Orascom a while back that the plan was to make the building mixed use rather than just a hotel. Given that there has been a small spurt of luxury apartment construction over there the last few years - I guess when Kim Jong Il's health started going down hill the party started to upgrade the housing of the inner party members to stem infighting - I'd be very surprised that if/when the interior is kitted out a fair chunk of the floor space will be apartments for Party VIPs, with the hotel/conference facilities mainly being for foreigners and Party get-togethers.

I don't think N. Korean common folk travel that much, even internally. They still use the internal passport system, and all the current hotels in Pyongyang are pretty empty and everyone in them is either a foreigner or their 'guides', so I just can't see there being much non-party domestic demand.

If NK is anything like post-WWII Soviet Union, then hotels, at least luxury hotels, will be quite expensive and above the expected budget for the average citizen.

From a few documentaries I've seen, there is vacation travel within NK. The majority seemed to be to scenic mountains via train. It wasnt clear if there was also reason to vacation in Pyongyang if not visiting family. Perhaps the mass games draws people in. That kind of info is probably available but as a westerner, the media coverage I see tends to fixate on other topics in regard to NK.

It's confirmed a new skyscraper hotel is under construction in Pyongyang. With the several thousand tourists the city sees per year, according to western sources, the hotel stay should be increasing. I think Kempinski would have been perfectly fine with addimg more rooms if their initial planned 100 in the Ryugyong were properly used. I think that once they realize that Kim Jong Un isn't stupid enough to actually want war with USA, they will come back to Ryugyong. This building would be too big a tourist attraction to just let up on. I know people who would visit NK just to step inside this building.

From August 2012. I wonder if the open windows showed interior work being done on the top floors, as was promised by Kempinski?

No idea when it's from

Love that first picture! Great cladding colour!

I wish Pyongyang would paint some of their apartment buildings... they look quite dirty.

I think I found a clever detail in the Ryugyong's architecture...

Height is 330 meters, base width is around 204 meters

Golden Ratio is 1.62

330/1.62 = 203.7, which is close to the Google Earth measured distance of 204 meters.

Conclusion? Ryugyong Hotel uses the Golden Ratio proportions

You can almost see it here, but MS Paint sucks

Yes, there is an observation tower in that area called the Juche Tower, but the shot is probably taken from a helicopter.

I wonder if the Fibonacci Sequence was intended to be incorporated into the building's design, or if it's just a coincidence. It's a really interesting observation, though.
